Following on from a Philip Larkin conversation last night, I have aquired an anecdote: my FIL also studied at Hull University in the 1960s, so met Larkin while he was librarian there. He said he was, "fucking weird".

There were civilizations elsewhere that were already old by the time the Romans civilized themselves sufficiently to start killing OTHER people. Why don't we start THERE? Central America. Africa. Asia. Australia (before Imperialism). I mean, the Chinese have been leaving written records of their lives since at least 7,000 years ago. What's the problem with starting with THEM?

@VeryBadLlama Look, when we were buying a house, we went thru all kinds of hell to afford it. We knew we had to because otherwise a significant portion of our income was going to rent and taxes. So we literally scrimped and saved to afford it. We stopped eating out at all (not even tea or coffee), did a lot of the painting and rehab work ourselves, and SUFFERED. I don't know, if you end up with a free TV, you can SELL it?

When my instincts tell me to avoid someone, I do so immediately, nowadays. I've failed to heed them before, to my detriment. These days, I listen.

Please, try to remember that things you say are judged by their capacity to harm not YOU but those your words target. Hamas has made it very clear explicitly and clearly that they want to murder every single Jew living between that river and the sea. You cannot make those words mean anything other than that.

Seeing their attempts at indoctrination fail to take hold the indoctrinated can only imagine they have been stymied by some equal and opposite form of indoctrination. That we might be sincere about creating the space for each young person to find their own way, to make up their own mind is impossible from their perspective.

That we wait on the outcomes of experiments and study to determine what is best? Just a lie.

His FAR more effective tactic was to fix us with one long-suffering eye and say, "Do we really have to tell you what is right and wrong, at your age? Did we not teach you right?" It worked a treat on us where Mum's slaps and smacks did not.

I'm currently reading about the African Diaspora and the resulting enslavement of Black people, and their skein of American history. I have assembled some 30-odd books on Native history to read next.     @Roundcat @chiz @Chozo I know! And I mostly agree. I don't go to Reddit, unless I get a link from there but I do sometimes go to Twitter bc I had 30K+ folks I knew there, and I miss them. It rly is dying tho. Nothing but Nazis screaming bile, and stuff doesn't work half the time. The bile is acceptable, but not working? Nobody pays for stuff that don't work. Not for long.
