Marketing Company Claims That It Actually Is Listening to Your Phone and Smart Speakers to Target Ads (www.404media.co)

A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a...

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads (kbin.social)

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

Polish Hackers Repaired Trains the Manufacturer Artificially Bricked. Now The Train Company Is Threatening Them (www.404media.co)

In one of the coolest and more outrageous repair stories in quite some time, three white-hat hackers helped a regional rail company in southwest Poland unbrick a train that had been artificially rendered inoperable by the train’s manufacturer after an independent maintenance company worked on it. Build quality on Frameworks is dramatically better than most ThinkPads. They've made a lot of improvements to battery life since the first generation (I got mine in the second batch), so it might have decent battery life now. They've always been more efficient on Linux than on Windows.

Ernest said he didn't introduce bad code on purpose:

I assure you that I didn't intentionally push incorrect code into the repository. These were my first lines of code in a really long time. I simply got involved in other things that I wanted to finish first, and I noticed the edge case in the meantime, but it wasn't a priority.

In case anyone is curious and doesn't know, "Do Not Track" was originally a proposed Internet standard from 2009-2018, but was never formally adopted by the W3C. Its successor is called Global Privacy Control (https://iapp.org/news/a/is-gpc-the-new-do-not-track/). I'm guessing that Grafana is playing games by saying there is no technology standard for DNT, because technically the new standard has a different name. I wouldn't consider a company that plays semantic games like this to be trustworthy when it comes to privacy.

Many people expressing support for Palestine and warning about genocide in Gaza are using talking points created by Hamas that call for the elimination of the state of Israel.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

There's nothing colonial about Israel. If anything, it is a reclamation of a displaced people of its original land. It has attempted repeatedly to compromise with the Palestinians, but nothing short of genocide against it appeals to them. They have outright rejected all attempts at political compromise, even though Israel was originally under no obligation to compromise with them.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar
  1. Israel didn't kick the Arabs out, Britain did.
  2. Jews are the original inhabitants of the Land of Israel. A more correct analogy would be a bunch of Aztecs walking into Mexico City, being granted a small part of it by Mexico, and then Mexico forcibly evicting all non-Aztecs from that area.
BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Do some cursory research into the history of that slogan. It originated as a call for the genocide of Israeli Jews.

Trying to reclaim it now as a "peaceful liberation protest" slogan would be like trying to reclaim the Nazi salute. Only an antisemite would attempt either.

This guy sounds like a stooge for Hamas. He conveniently leaves out that Hamas uses civilians as human shields and has outright rejected any attempts at compromise by Israel and the UN. He also referred to Palestinians as "indigenous", but they are by definition not indigenous, the Jews are.

From Merriam-Webster: indigenous : of or relating to the earliest known inhabitants of a place and especially of a place that was colonized by a now-dominant group

Israel is the dominant group and the Jews are the earliest extant inhabitants of the Holy Land. Calling the Palestinians indigenous is a misguided attempt at earning social justice points while ignoring actual history.

Tithing receipts have, at least since 1990, stated that donations become the property of the Church and that they are used at the Church's discretion. No promises are made as to how these donations are used. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/11/01/23/77294963-12699733-image-m-14_1698881844059.jpg

I used to buy used books all the time, and I read most of them. However, now that I have a decent e-reader (Kobo Libre 2), I'll probably only buy a physical copy of a book if I really enjoy it and think I might read it again or if it has otherwise left an impact on me.

American Ornithological Society (AOS) Council Statement on English Bird Names - American Ornithological Society (lemmy.world)

Would be right to use the names that Indigenous peoples had been using for millennia. Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) should be respected as equal to western scientific knowledge. If a species was already known to Indigenous people, it was not discovered by western scientists....

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Does this extend to binomial nomenclature, or just common names? Can birds have both traditional (indigenous) and Western common names?

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

This is a neat idea, and it makes a lot of sense. Do you know if there's a list of birds that have already been renamed? I searched around, but I couldn't find one. Perhaps I was using the wrong queries.

I keep hearing good things about Martha Wells. I need to start reading her books.

Well, Cities: Skylines 2 is here, and it's another broken game release.

I don’t really understand how people make the review threads, but we’re sitting at a 77 on OpenCritic right now. Many were worried about game performance after the recommended specs were released, but it looks like it’s even worse than we expected. It sounds like the game is mostly a solid release except for the...

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

That's disappointing. Some level of unmet expectations are to be, well, expected for a sequel to such a cultural behemoth as Cities: Skylines, but it sounds like Colossal Order made some sacrifices on the release date altar. Such a shame.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I think it's usually the publisher pushing the release dates on the dev studio.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Go further back, even. The UN Partition Plan for Palestine in 1947 would have given Palestine its own territory, splitting it with Israel 45/55. The Arab League and Arab Higher Committee of Palestine both rejected it.

It's not like compromises have never been offered. The Arabs have simply never been willing to accept anything less than the expulsion of the Jews from the territory.

(Comment by squaresinger removed by mod: “reason: Part of a white nationalist cult, defending said cult”. Comment summary: A Mormon clarifies that excommunication doesn’t ban attending church activities, but tensions arise when ex-members aggressively try to convert others away from the faith, citing their ex-Mormon returned missionary best friend as an example of someone who isnʼt hostile towards Mormon Church members.)

Wow, these mods really hate members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Our church is anything but white nationalistic. Most members of the Church live outside the United States and its leaders have repeatedly preached against racism and nationalism in recent years. I hope the mods educate themselves on this topic before further spreading their bigotry.

From Merriam-Webster:

Bigot
: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices
especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Synonyms include dogmatist, partisan, and sectarian.

Here's an article that may help you to understand why you are a bigot a bit better: https://www.existbetter.co/single-post/2019/04/15/Bigotry-is-a-SymptomHow-to-Handle-a-Bigot

America's nonreligious are a growing, diverse phenomenon. They really don't like organized religion (apnews.com)

Mike Dulak grew up Catholic in Southern California, but by his teen years, he began skipping Mass and driving straight to the shore to play guitar, watch the waves and enjoy the beauty of the morning. “And it felt more spiritual than any time I set foot in a church,” he recalled....

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

As a religious person in one of the top three most hated organized religions in the United States, I've found most of the anti-theist commentary about my religion to be highly ignorant. In the Fediverse, it's cool to hate on religions and religious people (especially members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), but nobody seems to be interested in doing any due diligence before spewing their hate. I couldn't number how many times I've been told what I believe (like, what?), usually something weird and outlandish or a century out of date.

Tl;dr anti-theist rhetoric in the Fediverse tends to be highly ignorant and hateful bigotry, not the enlightened discussion one would expect from people so, well, "enlightened".

Unemployment is paid for by employers. Paying unemployment to striking workers is in effect forcing employers to keep paying their employees even though they're not working.

Keep in mind that California is an at-will employment state.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

My point is that it's coercive and will drive businesses out of the state.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

But when you're paying striking workers to strike, you're incentivizing them to never compromise as long as the benefits last, which would be up to 26 weeks. Besides being unable to afford it, the state would start to see longer strikes and businesses moving out. I feel dirty for saying it, but this time Newsom was right.

Star Wars Finally Admits George Lucas' Biggest Jedi & Sith Criticisms Are Right (screenrant.com)

Star Wars has admitted some of George Lucas' biggest criticisms about the Jedi and Sith in a tremendous way. That's not really relevant. The United States Constitution is a separate document.

National defense is a red herring. The enumerated right is that of the people to keep and bear arms. One need not be doing so for the purpose of national defense in order to exercise this right.
