theherk,

Love Geerling and Rossmann, but I simply don’t understand the appeal of Levy; he is so over the top. Not that I would downvote this though, he is just not my style, and there are many good chess channels since the boom. Chessbrah, Anna Cramping, Hikaru, Banzea, and Hanging Pawns all come to mind.

Anna’s content, especially with parents GM Cramling and GM Bellón López is so fun and wholesome.

theherk,

Also wrote open source software to generate those fantastic visualizations. It has been forked and is maintained, and it has therefore influenced the whole genre positively.

On the topic, Brady Haran’s channels are also putting out great educational content.

theherk,

Hell yes. The blueing is so satisfying every single time. And such precision.

theherk,

You type like beltalowda.

theherk,

In this thread I see broadly two types of complaints:

  • Videos have degraded in presentation or production in some way.
  • Person said something I disagree with so I don’t like them anymore.

Both fine, but I think the latter is just a bummer and really reflects a much deeper problem of the times in which we live.

theherk,

Assuming English isn’t your mother tongue, I meant no offense. But “beltalowda” is a demonym referring to the group of humans occupying and mining the asteroid belt and other outer planetary areas in the science fiction story The Expanse. Your grammar is surprisingly close to their speech patterns.

theherk,

Please forgive me if I offended. That’s pretty neat though. I think the linguistics, while made up take examples from many languages.

theherk,

A wholly different organization; non-profit actually. And it is open source. Those are pretty big advantages over WhatsApp. I’m pro xmpp, but Signal is an improvement over WhatsApp.

theherk,

It’s globes all the way down.

theherk,

There are current rumors about Disney rebooting this, though I can say nothing of their veracity.

theherk,

I hear you, but… Andor is the exception. Worth one’s time.

theherk,

This movie is such a gem.

theherk,

Hot buttered rum, a smile in my child’s face, and a warm embrace. What more is there?

theherk,

I suppose it would depend on what is passing over.

theherk,

I meant nothing negative toward you unless you cut it off. Thank you for adding a new word to my lexicon.

theherk,

It was. And I really appreciate that.

Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær.

That’s a popular saying among Scandinavians on the theme. Translated: There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.

theherk,

ECS would also incur either Fargate or ECS, and S3 + Cloudfront, while robust is definitely not very simple. I’m not saying it is hard, just complex.

Your Github / Gitlab Pages solution is a great idea… even if you want to use custom domain. They both support it.

What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

I am super sick right now and haven’t eaten much in a few days. It’s getting to the point where I am gonna need to force myself to eat something to keep my strength up but everything just sounds terrible to me right now. I have been subsisting mostly on small glasses of milk and the occasional packet of instant oatmeal....

theherk,

I do like to add a lot to my hot oats or overnight oats, but when I’m trying to cut calories I still find oats are good if and only if you add enough salt. Even plain oats and water is fine with salt. Without, it just tastes like feet.

theherk,

I have some friends, and some people that are really important to me. My brother and wife truly are my best friends, but aside from them, I had two other homies that were my best best buds. One from military days, and one since the sixth grade.

One drank himself to death and the other shot himself. But old trees just grow stronger. I’m just glad to still be here, you know.

But I miss those motherfuckers all the time. Actually thanks for making me think about it.

What's your favorite compilation album?

I’ve been really enjoying the Red Hot Organization’s “No Alternative” and “Dark was the Night” recently, both because they raised a lot of money for AIDS research and because they do a great job of capturing the 90s alternative sound and 00s indie sound respectively, and it’s got me thinking how much I love...

theherk,

There are many great soundtracks that spring to mind. Among them just two are: Pulp Fiction and Garden State.

theherk,

While your question is answered I’m still left wondering if part of your question was if you can have a circular face cam in OBS. You can have a cam layer be masked by any shape, so yeah, no problem.

theherk,

Many valid points here, but here is a slightly different perspective. Let’s say for the sake of discussion AI is somehow disruptive here. So?

You cannot predict what will happen in this very fast space. You should not attempt to do so in a way that compromises your path toward your interests.

If you like accounting or art or anything else that AI may disrupt… so what? Do it because you are interested. It may be hyper important to have people that did so in any given field no matter how unexpected. And most importantly, doing what interest you is always at least part of a good plan.

theherk,

It is worth noting that “loses money” and “costs money” are generally just differences of perspective. For many, public services don’t necessarily need to be profitable monetarily to be worth their cost.

eta: I would like to clarify that this is in no way disagreement. More of a yes-and, than a but. I agree with you completely.

theherk,

A few things. First, the only tip I’ve even been given about getting rid of hiccups is drinking a glass of water upside down. As in, lips to the backside of the glass then leaning forward so far you can drink it. And you must drink quite a bit, maybe 300ml. Is this purely anecdotal? For me and those around me, yes, but maybe there is research about it. But it works for us, without fail, and it seems unbelievable even to me.

Regarding sneezing, I am currently discovering it has another feature where after having a few prosthetic discs inserted into your lower back via your abdomen, a sneeze also doubles as the world’s fastest impetus for suicidal ideation.

Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I have come across a lot’s of people like these. like 99% of them. Sometimes it makes me think twice if what i am saying is wrong? What’s wrong with them. Is it so hard to swallow your pride and acknowledge that the other person is speaking facts? When they come to know they are wrong they proceed to insult/make fun of...

theherk,

Best thing my daddy taught me; no matter how confident you are, you could always be wrong. Brains are just unreliable sometimes. Sky is blue? Could be wrong. You’re N years old? Probably… but you could be wrong.

Accepting this allows one to improve. Best we can do is recognize this, and try our best to minimize how often we’re wrong.

This has allowed me to withhold confidence in many situations. Not in deference, but in thoughtful acceptance that I truly might be wrong.

Best dad ever.

theherk,

I don’t think so, and he and I have discussed this in epistemological terms several times over the years. “Sky is blue” example was probably bad as would have been “earth is round” etc. The point isn’t that anything can be wrong, though strictly speaking, I guess it can. What we mean is precisely that our minds have the ability to mislead us and powerfully so. But part of the drive to minimize that is to understand the value of consensus in both scientific communities and wider communities.

To have the best ratio of things about which were correct vs incorrect, being confident in things like the outcome of refereed science is helpful.

theherk,

Yes, but I have noticed you have to wait for that spin for quite some time. I have not looked at its architecture at all, but it made me assume it was doing some intermediary caching or some such. I wonder if this is the same for videos that have been watched already at your local CDN assuming it is doing something interesting with edge delivery.

Have just started to check it out, so I’m clueless but it has worked pretty well so far.

theherk,

Nice to see another wefwef user out there. For anybody that hasn’t checked it out you should. vger.app

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....

theherk,

If you want to discover new music, use “Start Radio” in lieu of shuffle.

theherk,

Sorry I was unclear. I meant in YouTube Music. It has a Start Radio option which is suitable for discovery.

theherk,

A lot of bummer answers here and they are many feelings I have had, but now I am old, and I look at it like this. I once didn’t exist. One day, I will again not exist and I’ll never exist again. In the meantime, I get a very brief glimpse to open my eyes and see the universe. In it is a lot of things. Among them love, mac and cheese, peanut butter, sex, and dancing. A hearty laugh and a warm hug is worth all the pain it comes with.

theherk,

Just for the sake of fun conversation, unfortunately the Big Crunch models have fallen out of favor since we discovered the universal expansion is accelerating indefinitely. So… this may be it. Or it may not, but oh well. Eat some marshmallows and dance a jig.

theherk,

Oh indeed. And it probably never will be.

theherk,

Omegle is a platform that can be used so many strange ways. The fake leave when they show up in the next “feed” trick, the periodic titties, overregular dicks, and stars like this and the dooo, truly make it an interesting project.

I've lately been making my git commit messages with AI (reddthat.com)

It writes more informative commits than I could ever make so I’m just reading what it says and mostly copy/pasting completely most of the time, I write all of the changes I’ve made into an LLM with a large context window and it write a very detailed commit not just with a title but with bullet points describing each of the...

theherk,

So already not imperative. I hope the model writes better message than you.

theherk,

Not open source and last I checked you had to sign in to use it. Can’t imagine why people would use it.

theherk,

Okay, that’s a hilarious response, but what I meant should have been obvious even if my phrasing was poor. I have trouble understanding why one would believe these features outweigh software freedom.

theherk,

Thank you for the follow up. Maybe I’ll give it another spin. I’ve been tinkering with floorp but it isn’t polished.

There are some themes that are common, but it is always best to look for a contribution guide, often distributed as CONTRIBUTING.md.

Ex-North Dakota lawmaker charged with traveling for sex with minor, receiving child sex abuse images (apnews.com)

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A retired Republican state senator from North Dakota has been charged with traveling to Europe with the intent of paying for sex with a minor and with receiving images depicting child sexual abuse, according to a federal indictment unsealed Monday....

theherk,

That’s a great list. I think you may have missed thabeast and barberousking in your Mario section. Also, if you like taskmaster, you may enjoy Would I Lie to You?

A 30 minute walk through a beautiful but extremely rainy European city. When I lived in SF, it involved bike, Onewheel, and / or ferry, and no matter how I went it took about 50 minutes. I love walking in the rain though, so my current commute is my favorite.
