sloonark,

Since Boost for Reddit still works I’m usually over there.

sloonark,

That bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly.

What are some commonly known facts that are too bizarre for you to believe to be true?

For me it is the fact that our blood contains iron. I earlier used to believe the word stood for some ‘organic element’ since I couldn’t accept we had metal flowing through our supposed carbon-based bodies, till I realized that is where the taste and smell of blood comes from.

sloonark,

Your comment has made me realise I don’t understand how floating works.

sloonark,

Notepad is the default text editor on Windows. I’d be surprised if most people even knew WordPad existed.

sloonark,

Wild Pigs of Europe would make a good band name.

sloonark,

I thought pretty much everyone in Australia was paid fortnightly.

sloonark,

I have a P7. There are 2 things I don’t like about it: it’s too heavy, and the jerky scrolling.

If they released an updated version of the P5 I would jump on that. The P5 was the perfect phone.

sloonark,

Here’s a little known secret: you can still enjoy Lemmy without giving up reddit. I use both. There are some sports subreddits that I am not prepared to walk away from.

sloonark,

Well, it sure does look like the moon. Nice work.

sloonark,

I thought this post title was just random words strung together at first.

sloonark,

I know. The picture of the calendar is entirely self-explanatory yet they wrote a thousand words explaining it.

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. (gizmodo.com)

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

sloonark,

Really? Reddit retained about 98% of its users and gained full control of the app market. I’d call that a success for them. They got exactly what they wanted.

What are some physics-based arguments against hard determinism?

I don’t believe free will is real. I’m not a deep physics person (and relatively bad at math), but with my undergrad understanding of chemistry, classical mechanics, and electromagnetism, it seems most rational that we are creatures entirely controlled by our environments and what we ingest and inhale....

sloonark,

But unpredictability is not the same as free will. Doesn’t free will imply a conscious decision being made?

sloonark,

Thanks for this recommendation. I’m going to have to watch it.

The other day I heard a friend talking about how "the moon's gravity affects our internal organs." This sounds like bull, but is it? And if so, how would I correct their misinformation?

I think the reason some people might believe this claim is because we’re taught in school that the moon’s gravity causes the tides. I think the reasoning goes, “well if the moon’s gravity can affect the tides, surely it can affect smaller things too”

sloonark,

Why is this being upvoted when it is blatantly false?

sloonark,

I really wish I did not watch this.

sloonark,

The Australian Christian Lobby is a cancer.

sloonark,

I honestly think the Pixel 5 is the best phone I have ever used. I have the P7 and I kind of wish I had stuck with the P5.

sloonark,

My three kids all have Motorolas. They make great budget phones.

sloonark,

Yeah I would never buy a non-Pixel phone now.

sloonark,

The Nexus 6P was so good.

sloonark,

Fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. So you’d pick it up and your finger would naturally fall on the sensor, so that by the time you look at the screen, it’s unlocked.

sloonark,

You don’t have to leave your finger on the sensor while you use the phone.

sloonark,

I always put my phone face down so I have to pick it up anyway.

sloonark,

Because we are all Lemmy enthusiasts.

sloonark,

I always have a 1000 piece puzzle on the go. Whenever I have a spare 15 minutes or so I do a bit more.

sloonark,

Exactly. It doesn’t even make sense as it is.

sloonark,

Business as usual, it seems.

sloonark,

In a weird way I find these kind of jokes nostalgic, because they remind me of when I was a kid reading old comic books, and all the husbands seemed to hate their wives and vice versa.

Google Maps for Android rolling out much faster voice input powered by Assistant [Gallery] (9to5google.com)

The Google Maps app for Android has, for years now, had the same old voice input that’s slow and not as accurate as Google’s latest offerings. Finally that’s changing, as Google Maps is rolling out a new voice input experience powered by Google Assistant.

sloonark,

for every moth that passes

This is such a cool typo. I love the mental image.

sloonark,

I enjoyed Caribbean and Alaska.

sloonark,

This rebrand is so dumb in so many ways.

sloonark,

You really have to wonder what was going through the developer’s mind here. Did they just have excess frosted glass they needed to use?

sloonark,

Pretty sure Sesame Street’s use of the letter X pre-dates Musk’s claim to it as well.

sloonark,

Oh well. Civilisation was nice while it lasted.

sloonark,

I like the idea behind the community but it is a terrible name. Without reading an explanation, most people would assume it was some toxic, misogynistic group. I only know what it refers to because I bothered reading some of the comments here.

I’m sure there are much better names, such as Positive Masculinity for example.

What goes into writting books?

So what goes into writting a book, can anyone do it, ive been wanting to do many things for a while but i think sense i was a kid i wanted to write a book or even a short story or something that i can publish. the thing is i have major dylexia, i tend to not plan things and instead write on the spot, also i have partiall ideas....

sloonark,

Writing a novel is really hard and takes a lot of skill. My advice is to start by writing short stories to develop your writing ability. Post them online to get feedback. Keep slowly improving until you are good enough to write something longer.

There are plenty of online writing sites where users post their work for feedback. One good one is Critique Circle.

sloonark,

The Prestige is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
