Privacy is not just an illusion; it’s a delusion

Privacy is not just an illusion; it’s a delusion. Things like privacy statements and permission to use cookies are little more than sophisticated propaganda. If you think for a moment the Overlords cannot prepare a dossier on you within minutes that would make your mother faint and your father die of shame, you’re living in...

“but does your Windows do this?” Followed by rotating the cube. She was like, “I don’t care.”

Wow, that sums up my Linux life pretty well actually

simple,

Last time I tried to mess with Windows partition I tried to expand it to merge free space in my C:\ drive, but I couldn’t do that because Windows put the recovery partition in the middle, with no permission to remove it. Had to jump through a million hoops to get Windows to remove it.

I mean sure, Windows is easier in many ways. Not partition management. Anything but that. What a pain.

Dude was schizoposting the other thread and attacking everyone for downvoting him lmao

Why isn't everyone talking about AI generated audiobooks?

I just listened to this AI generated audiobook and if it didn’t say it was AI, I’d have thought it was human-made. It has different voices, dramatization, sound effects… The last I’d heard about this tech was a post saying Stephen Fry’s voice was stolen and replicated by AI. But since then, nothing, even though it’s...

simple,

A lot of people just aren’t aware of how fast AI is moving. AI voices were pretty meh earlier this year. A lot of people working on the audiobook/voice acting scene have been talking about this though.

What is the deal with Palestine and Hamas?

For mental health reasons, I had taken myself out of most political topics. But lately there seems to be a surge of talk about Palestine and Hamas (forgive me if I spelled this wrong). I do know it’s something to do with land rights, but it also seems to be so much more at the same time. I’m not trying to start any fights. I...

and Israel responded (they had a right to) but it’s debatable whether the response was appropriate.

Are you kidding me? Their “response” was bombing ~2 million innocent people out of their homes and telling them that they shouldn’t have been there. Imagine if someone from Japan bombed China, and China’s response was bombing random people in Tokyo.

Their response was absolutely not appropriate unless you love genocide. The situation is not nuanced, people act like it is so they don’t have to take a side.

simple,

It’s an old platformer that was notorious for being hard and unfair. People really like it and made tons of fangames like it, which brings us to this one that’s similar to mario maker, but for I Wanna Be the Guy.

I need a low budget laptop

I want to create a setup where I have a powerfull PC at home, and a lightweight economic laptop to carry around like at school to take notes or watch media on the go. I’d like to spend around 250 euro, and for the os linux is ok. Thanks for the help. P.S. sry if the sub doesn’t fit but I didn’t know where to post this...

simple,

I don’t have any specific recommendations but when shopping for cheap laptops always keep in mind:

  • Always buy a laptop with an SSD, it will make a huge difference
  • Don’t get a Celeron processor.
  • Aim for 8gb of RAM.
  • “Windows 11 S Mode” is a limited version of Windows that forces you to use the Microsoft store. Essentially it’s a Chromebook style version of windows, and it’s garbage, so if you see a laptop that sells this be ready to install a different OS when you get it.

Looking around, there are a few options that match the criteria in the $250-300 range. Good luck.

What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

I hate that I always compare Lemmy to Reddit, but Reddit used to have (not sure if they still do) guidelines called “Reddiquette” that included guidelines about upvoting and downvoting. I don’t remember the specifics (and sending too much of my browser traffic to Reddit makes me feel dirty) but one of the guidelines was...

simple,

Upvoting: I like this post or it adds to the discussion/community (I want to see more of this)

Downvoting: This is spam, off topic, etc. or the poster is being an arse (in general, I want to see less of this)

Simple as.

Looks lovely! The art of fonts is something I will never understand but always appreciate. This website is also brilliant in showing everything dynamically and explaining why it all matters. Safe to say Github will start using it everywhere? It’s also open source, which is nice (and makes sense considering what Github is striving for).

Edit: Not 100% sure on texture healing though. Toggling it on and off in the example makes me feel like texture healing makes everything look weirder. It makes the font look less monospace which should be good, but it just messes with my mind when some letters look slightly different in different contexts. Like the spacing is not immediately obvious to me and having the same letters look different is throwing my mind in a loop. I guess I’ll need to try it to see if it’s comfortable.

and optimally performant DE

Except it’s the worst DE in terms of performance. Using KDE instead of Gnome made a big difference in my weaker laptop.

simple,

GNOME is the best performing modern DE outside of lightweight nice DEs.

This is straight up not true, GNOME is a memory hog and uses almost twice as much as KDE. I’m idling ~4% CPU usage on an i5 7300HQ, which is just barely better than yours. There’s a reason the Steam Deck opted to use KDE and not Gnome.

KDE is an absolute mess and is a hobbyist DE in comparison to the professional GNOME.

As someone who used gnome for two years, hell no. Gnome is trying too hard to be minimalist and is lacking basic features that you have to use extensions for. Extensions which, by the way, break each update and have their own bugs. I also had to use gnome tweaks for basic crap like disabling mouse acceleration. KDE is a much more polished experience for people who actually use computers, but gnome is okay if you’re just looking for something simple that looks smooth.

simple,

A million buzzwords and nothing new. It’s a $700 privacy nightmare you strap to your chest that sends whatever you say to ChatGPT’s API, something you can do on your phone for free. I’m surprised it got any funding at all.

simple,

This is making me very nostalgic. I never finished Braid or understood its story that well, but the music and atmosphere are unforgettable. The puzzles are really well put together, too.

simple,

I’m just eager to know how much laptops will cost with the new Qualcomm chip. I don’t want to pop champagne too early only to realize that new ARM laptops cost $2000.

I love how they put some bare minimum basic things inbetween new content

“COMING SOON: GAMEPAD REBINDING AND SAVE GAME FIXES. LOOK FORWARD TO OUR COOL FREE CONTENT”

simple,

Just went down and never came back up. Nobody knows where the admin went, which sucks.

simple,

A leak saying they’re planning to release a trailer next month is definitely news.

simple,

Get in the robot, Remy.

simple,

“Over the past 12 months or so I got very sick and it didn’t go away,” tweeted writer and artist Scott Benson on November 7. “Eventually I was diagnosed with severe heart failure, most likely from a virus. It will continue to greatly limit me for the foreseeable future and as such I’ve had to stop working in the manner I once did.”

Benson said he’s working on his recovery before deciding what’s next. “Past few months are a blur of hospitals, doctors, tests, procedures, exciting new medications, and so, so much blood drawn,” he tweeted. “I’m sad about all of this. But on my end getting too upset about it is like getting angry at bad weather. This just happened. Life thankfully goes on.”

Holy shit, I hope he gets well soon.

simple,

I’m staying patient on this game after the rough release. Glad to see them fixing all these issues quickly though, looking forward to picking it up next year when everything’s tuned.

simple,

Willing to bet it also catches non-AI text and calls it AI-generated constantly

simple,

PC handhelds are too big, heavy, and have bad battery life

I generally agree, but if ARM chips next year don’t disappoint then it won’t be the case for long. It’ll take time until x86 games play nice on them but when they do we can expect PC handhelds similar to Android ones. Reasonably sized and with a great battery life. Handhelds have a good future.

Could Lemmy be used as a classroom tool (like having a classroom's own instance)

I feel like it would be an interesting learning tool cuz I learn a ton on here and it gets me writing without anyone having to hold a gun to my head. I mean like even essay-length or at least essay-worthy treatments of things I respond to in longer-form, and even for the shorter-form stuff

simple,

Really no point in doing a Lemmy instance if you’re going to defederate from everything. There are easier forums to set up, or better yet, actual tools for classrooms like Blackboard and Moodle.

simple,

They’ve also released glitched patch notes showing comets.

simple,

Intended. They like doing teasers like this and the error is in-universe.

simple,

g2a sells stolen keys. Look into the grey market steam key resellers, many devs have complained about it. Might as well pirate a game rather than buy it from something like g2a.

simple,

Considering the target audience is like 14 years old, 6 years is almost half their lifetime, so no doubt a lot of teens are nostalgic for the old days
