Yeah but this is a game for characters who are played by people who exist in a world where that is not the case, so maybe a little sensitivity is called for.

pomodoro_longbreak,
@pomodoro_longbreak@sh.itjust.works avatar

Then let people make characters without disabilities if they want (which is already the case). But what if someone wants to play a character, or see characters, that face similar challenges to the ones they do? And then get to play them overcoming those challenges!

This is not exactly equivalent, and I’m not asserting that you meant this, but imagine in a different time someone saying, “I don’t understand why anyone would want to play a non-white race, since it just opens them up to racism, when they could just fit in and be normal.” I consider that to be along the same class of argument as the one we’re discussing here.

why would a person want to fantasize about having a disability

To imagine a world where they are the same, but their disability is not an impediment. A more perfect world, rather than imagining themselves as other than they are.

Anything in roleplaying is possible, why not this stuff then?

Exactly, say it’s a curse, or magic in nature. Or maybe just One of Those Things that we don’t know how to change, but the character does their best, and kind people around that character support them and help them be as able as possible.

I can just imagine something in the middle being like

I still think it looks really cool, but I’m still in favour of more accessible public transportation eating away at the space cars have taken from us.

Also I will never ever buy a Tesla, for wide ranging variety of other reasons.

They’re also bees, which are notably distinct from humans in ways almost too numerous to count.

Honey and cheese in general – mwah. I like a fresh slice of challah with brie and honey on top.

bees sometimes fly, like flies, but not exactly like flies; though they do fly. Bees do. Well, flies also fly, but differently. Not that differently if you don’t care about such distinctions, but pretty differently if you do. I wish I could fly. That last one wasn’t a bee fact. It was a me fact.

While we’re focused on fairness let’s also match by height, and weight, wingspan, general body type, age, years of experience, amount spent on coaching, support of parents, emotional stability, and wrist circumference.

Wouldn’t want to be unfair.

I’m not a sports person but it seems like chess and video game match making have had this figured out for a while: just play ranked. Your rank can change at official events, like when you’re competing, and everyone gets matched with people around their skill level/ability, with the occasional hotshot rising through the ranks blowing everyone away.

I’ll one up, Andor is the best thing to come out of Star Wars, even including the books, comics, games, and original trilogy.

That one homemade pizza I made once.

Like I don’t even think I proofed the boules, but it was like chewy and crispy, with the perfect black peaks coming out of the oven.

Hey thank you for commenting on this. It lets me do a tiny lil soapboxing here for just one second hehe:

I wish people did it more often, but I do find the fedi in general good for accessibility (Mastodon community seems especially good at captioning).

I don’t want to shame anyone, but I have been trying to cook up a series of memes to encourage this community (and others) to alt up their images.

After I stopped caring about having a unified online persona, I just picked random names everywhere. Sometimes I’ll just drop a name that doesn’t fit anymore.

Feels so freeing. Like this is my at work account. When I hand in my work laptop, it’s gone.

I went back at 35. It was very much worth it. What are you taking, if you don’t mind me asking?

pomodoro_longbreak,
@pomodoro_longbreak@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah I graduated a good while ago - diploma in programming from a technical school which – for anyone who isn’t familiar – offers a sort of pared down education with an emphasis on job placement (credits for doing highly subsidized work in the field). I was always drawn to the humanities, too. Took a stab at anthropology, but maybe the time wasn’t right.

Anyway, even a simple “advanced diploma” in programming nearly killed me (I got a passing “D” in maths that I am very proud of), but now I don’t have any issue finding gainful employment, which is nice. Downside being all the creative humanities stuff that is my real passion is purely for hobbies now. I honestly don’t hate the arrangement.

My partner taught English as a second language, too. She found it rewarding, and met a lot of her now good friends doing that.

But surely you must admit that they do extract more wealth from the working classes for people who just move money around. Let’s see your profit-less crown corporation do that. Checkmate /s

Yeah I think the story benefits from some humorous beats, but maybe not like that, in retrospect.

What I’m driving at is that by making everyone flat, no one can grow. When Boromir falls for the Ring, everyone in the audience saw it coming from a mile away. When Denethor goes suicidal, there’s no surprise because he’s a raving madman from the moment we meet him.

Damn

pomodoro_longbreak,
@pomodoro_longbreak@sh.itjust.works avatar

Right I guess that’s partly down to the medium of movies. Probably not enough screentime to devote to a more subtle character evolution.

The connection between madness and pineapples has been a topic of conversation for years, but no one knows exactly why the two complement each other so perfectly.
