miridius,

We have come full circle!

miridius,

Portugal is soooooo much more progressive than the USA, and I’m willing to bet that having something a lot closer to actual democracy than they do is part of the reason.

I think you’re misunderstanding the effect of not having FPTP. It’s not that you get rid of FPTP and suddenly the mainstream party loses power - not at all, but rather what happens is that they see first hand how close they are to losing power by the number of people casting their primary votes elsewhere. That means they are forced to cater their policies at least a little bit toward all those people, and it ends up having a real meaningful impact on their platform. Whereas in the US, the FPTP system rewards Democrats not for following the wills of the most people, but rather for just being very slightly less right wing than the Republicans, because that way they’ll scoop up the votes of everyone to the left of them, regardless how far left.

miridius,

Google creates that problem though by continuing to use a ranking algorithm that promotes that type of content. It’s been an issue for many years and they don’t change it

miridius,

Wait until you find out about wem and wen

miridius,

We’ve had guns for 200 years but not ones capable of mass shootings. Semiautomatics only became widely available more recently, and most countries have since banned them from casual use but not the USA

miridius,

Everyone who has kids or plans to have kids should go to therapy, it’s the only way to stop the cycle of trauma

miridius,

cost

Linux is only low cost if your time costs nothing

reliability

lol

miridius,

Ich glaube du meinst du aufwählst?

miridius,

A union is a good idea but this is also something you can and should take into your own hands too. If your wage hasn’t gone up at all in a couple years you should be complaining about that very loudly to your bosses individually. It helps even more if you can get some other job offers to be able to compare your current wage to

miridius,

All those years of learning German have finally paid off: now I can get twice as many memes

miridius,

£5/zero years. So £Infinity/year

miridius,

You do realise ublock origin exists for Chrome as well right?

miridius,

People have been saying that about Chrome for at least a decade and it’s never happened. If it does actually happen (it won’t) then I’ll switch but no reason to switch before then.

miridius,

In what way?

miridius,

Zero mentions of Chrome in that article

miridius,

I love Lemmy but I find the extreme pro-FOSS bias and hatred of everything else to be pretty abrasive and not conducive to useful or interesting discussion. And that’s coming from someone who both loves to use and contribute to FOSS. But my preferred desktop OS isn’t Linux which apparently according to the Lemmy hivemind is a big no-no.

I think more Lemmy users need to learn that the upvote and downvote buttons aren’t meant to be used to indicate agreement and disagreement respectively, it’s to indicate if a comment is valuable contribution to the discussion regardless of whether or not you agree.

In a post discussing Chrome, a few comments about alternative browsers make sense. But if there are 100s and 100s of comments all just saying some variation of “switch to Firefox otherwise you suck” and those are the only ones that are upvoted, then the whole comment section becomes pointless.

miridius,

It’s opt in, just not in America

miridius,

Yes exactly it’s a question about Windows. Saying “use Linux” is not relevant to this post, which is about Windows.

It’s also terrible advice.

miridius,

I hate this so much but I want to call out the Google and Apple are just as bad. I used edge for a while and I constantly got popups on every Google owned website telling me how great Chrome is and that I should switch, it was even worse than what you get from Windows telling you to use Edge. And don’t even get me started about Safari on iPhones…

miridius,

European here. Which law is this breaking, exactly? Pretty sure advertising is legal

miridius,

Yeah then instead of spending seconds closing a popup you can spend days troubleshooting driver issues

miridius,

I wonder how much of that on Reddit is just bots and shills, ie corporations paying to create and upvote posts and comments that support their agenda

miridius,

I think there’s a wide range of people on Lemmy too but the extreme right and extreme left have ended up on instances that have been defederated from the main group. So what you’re seeing are the sensible, rational people, and in America such people are considered left wing I guess 😉

miridius,

It’s worth noting that this setting also hides then from search results, which is pretty silly imo. So when searching, use a different account/different browser

miridius,

I switched from CentOS to Ubuntu server quite a few years ago and have been very happy with it.

One of the benefits is that for someone like myself who is not a full time Linux user, having the same distro on both home and work machines makes it a lot easier to know more about each of them
