madcow,

I’m wheezing at the amount of existential dread in your question about BBQ sauces. Sorry man, life may be shitty right now but at least you’ve got a good sense of humor.

madcow,

Godspeed! And may the the bbq sauce life raft carry you safely across these treacherous waters.

madcow,

I could kinda tolerate Reddit gold as an alternate way to donate. But then they added a boatload of awards and it just became annoying visual noise. I blocked all awards and I’m suprised there are people who miss them. Why not add a donator badge to user profiles if you want some kind of value for your donation?

madcow,

I fully agree. And it feels great to do something you believe in without expecting to recognized for it. I just tried to give an alternative to comment awards that would limit the visual noise.

You said there are NO trackers and I see 146 tracking attempts. It doesn’t matter how much data they collect, what you said is not right. Even the dev said that trackers are disabled when you get the ad free version which implies that trackers do exist otherwise. I have no horse in this race but it’s hard to have a discussion when people use such definitive and inaccurate statements.

madcow,

I’m running my emulators just fine in dev mode.

madcow,

Good for you. It’ nice to have different options! I prefer to play at home so I’d rather have my games on the big TV.

madcow,

How did you get an invite? I’d love to join but the waiting list seems really long right now.

madcow, (edited )

Thank you so much! That would be awesome. I can only offer you an invite for Tildes in return.

madcow,

It even says “Junk removal” on the business card!

madcow,

But how would you define the point at which our material needs are met? It feels like it’s an intrinsic desire for humans to gain an advantage over other people. Or at least we want the illusion of being able to gain an advantage through either hard work or gaming the system. For me it seems like capitalism lies in our nature and it requires a complete change of our societal values to move to a different system. Not saying that I think capitalism is a good thing.

My Opinion: NewPipe, Piped, Invidious, etc's days are numbered.

With Reddit shutting down its API setting a precedent in the corporate tech world (and Reddit was a major outlier in that a ton of their users are technical minded and support third party clients, YouTube does not have that kind of userbase and will not get backlash for it), Twitter doing whatever the fuck they’re doing, and...

madcow,

Or until they implement a trust model that denies access to uncertified user-agents?

madcow,

They don’t even allow me to delete my account. They suspended me (never posted anything) and now I’d need to beg to be unbanned, just to get off Mr. Elons wild ride. I’m in the EU so I’m thinking about making use of my right to be forgotten.

what are .webp files and why has my online experience been plagued by them?

I don’t know what a .webp file is but I don’t like it. They’re like a filthy prank version of the image/gif you’re looking for. They make you jump through all these hoops to find the original versions of the files that you can actually do anything with....

madcow,

XL is such a counter-intuitive suffix for a compression format.

madcow,

I blocked every meme community I’ve seen so far. But I must admit the one you posted together with the specific description of your meme-taste was kinda cute. I might subscribe to your curated meme-collection.

Missed my windows phone, so I tried some android launcher replacements! (reddthat.com)

Despite its failure to capture a significant market share, I really enjoyed the metro UI on windows phone and tablet. One UI on my Samsung was getting stale and has a nearly unusable apps drawer, and standard Android notifications are nagging and ungainly....

madcow,

Looking great! Which font and icons do you use?

Distro hoppers, how do you manage your config files?

I am currently trying to keep track of my config files in a repo to be able to get the configa back together easily if/when I change distro, but I am not sure if that’s the best way or if I should be using some tool to help me since I some programs keep preferences in other directories other then $HOME (at least I think so)....

madcow,

I really like the simplicity of this workflow by StreakyCobra on HN (explained as a blog post here):

I use:

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">git init --bare $HOME/.myconf
</span><span style="color:#323232;">alias config='/usr/bin/git --git-dir=$HOME/.myconf/ --work-tree=$HOME'
</span><span style="color:#323232;">config config status.showUntrackedFiles no
</span>

where my ~/.myconf directory is a git bare repository. Then any file within the home folder can be versioned with normal commands like:

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">config status
</span><span style="color:#323232;">config add .vimrc
</span><span style="color:#323232;">config commit -m "Add vimrc"
</span><span style="color:#323232;">config add .config/redshift.conf
</span><span style="color:#323232;">config commit -m "Add redshift config"
</span><span style="color:#323232;">config push
</span><span style="color:#323232;">And so one…
</span>

No extra tooling, no symlinks, files are tracked on a version control system, you can use different branches for different computers, you can replicate you configuration easily on new installation.

madcow,

You can always use something like PGP to encrypt your communication.

madcow,

Man that was some solid engagement!
