Gamers™ are known for not having a nuanced understanding of mental health (because, y’know, the only emotion men have is anger) and we’re just seeing it here. Thankfully I have a hairtrigger block button :)
No, it’s just trauma and not wanting that to come up at the game table. Simple as that. I had a group before the pandemic where just about everyone had some kind of trauma and this is 100000% not the kind of thing they or I would enjoy.
Not a bad take, your $0.02 is worth more than a lot of other people’s (not saying the takes here are bad, just a general statement). I’m far, far on the opposite end of the extreme of some people in this thread; I was comfortable on a single 11" MacBook Air screen". Part of that is certainly my ADHD/autism, in that I can hyperfocus on the thing that’s in the foreground and just swap everything else to disk when I’m not looking at it. I appreciate the recognition that it is all about taste; so many folks tend to state their preferences like they’re objective fact.
They should have thought of that before becoming parents, then. It’s not the kid’s fault the parents can’t think ahead or take responsibility for their stupid actions. School shouldn’t be a babysitter for John and Jane Doe.
I mean, much as I’d like Sisko to come back in anything regarding DS9, that Brooks doesn’t want to do it is actually convenient for the story: Sisko’s in the Celestial Temple with the Prophets, let him stay there. LD has shown we can have a great DS9 episode without him.
It’s a shame he’s not interested, but there are plenty of BIPOC actors who’d love to have a chance at being in Trek.
Q could fingersnap the Prophets out of existence. While powerful, and indeed nonlinear (which Q is as well), their influence is more or less strictly limited to the Celestial Temple.
Remember that the reason that there is no public transport or non-car options is because of the auto industry lobby. They have actively worked to eliminate rail and other means of public transit throughout North America and in every other country where they have a presence (e.g. Germany). The US used to have trains crisscrossing the entire nation. One of the few truly cross-country commuter lines that Amtrak still has is, fittingly, called the Empire Builder. Horrors of colonialism and imperialism aside, it’s a fitting name because trains really did build the US. They supplanted and replaced the Pony Express for delivering mail (and thus communication, something that older empires couldn’t manage) among so many other things, like freight and even livestock–and, of course, people.
Where’d they go? How come there are so few left? Ask GM, Ford, and so on.
Church, and mosque, not as religious symbols but as a community centers reminds lonely isolated people that they can go now and they will find people there to chat a little bit with.
Unless they’re gay, or trans, or polyamorous, or …
I don’t believe it’s a difficult concept to grasp. Things have gotten worse in our lifetimes and we understand it. What’s stopping the average boomer? It’s not their age, it’s Fox “News”.
And there’s no recompense or tracking if someone robs you or it gets stolen, it’s error-prone and slow (especially people who insist on giving exact fucking change…)
Slow, messy (in both senses: unclean and bulky and disorganized), inconvenient, heavy (coins), easy to lose / be robbed of / have stolen, no recompense or tracking if that happens, easiest to counterfeit, do I need to go on?
There’s that episode of TNG where he has to confront, get along with, and work peacefully with the Cardassians. I forget which one it is, but he does not handle it well.
Oh, and also remember he’s seen so much combat (235 separate engagements) that Starfleet recognized him as an expert in starship combat. Saw his friend (Nog) mutilated by the Jem’Hadar (The Siege of AR-558). Watched his other friend die slowly after being attacked by the Jem’Hadar (Muniz). Almost died with his situationship (Bashir) inside of a spy’s (Sloan’s) mind. Constantly injured his shoulder or other parts of his body while trying to relax (kayaking, raquetball, darts).
Consider that smokers exist. The entire premise of being a smoker is that you damage your own health and the health of everyone around you. It is not at all different.
A modern version of Stars! (the ! is part of the title). It’s an early / mid-90s (as in it worked on Windows 3.1!) 4x scifi strategy game, one of the early ones. Huge tech tree for its day, something like six-eight different research fields (propulsion, biology, energy, etc.) and 26 (!) levels in each with techs that depend on different levels in each research field. Different species had their own unique traits, techs, ships, playstyles, you could build your own with literally dozens of minor traits, customizable tolerances for planetary traits like radiation, gravity, temperature, custom breeding rate, productivity, … Unlimited completely custom ship and starbase designer where you could put any part in any slot where it fits and the game would just let you. No limits on the number of ships you could have (take that, Masters of Orion!) Came with a manual an inch and a half thick, supported many different kinds of multiplayer (including play by email… again, 1995!) and so many other cool things. Sadly, the company that owned it was passed around a bit and then the parent company went out of business, so it’s abandonware and no one is likely to do anything with it.
Also a modern version of the old Might and Magic games (3-5 in the series, especially 4-5, usually known as World of Xeen) with some elements of the old (1-5) Wizardry games. Did I mention I’m old? I’m old. I know someone who’s working on something like that, but I hear she’s harried by capitalism and has ADHD besides and hasn’t made a lot of progress. I really should bug her to keep at it… (spoiler: she is me)
I mean, smart casters don’t get in fights. Smart casters pile buff spells (which don’t need to beat DCs, overcome spell resistance, defend against attacks of opportunity, …) on the big stupid fighter™ so the big stupid fighter™ can get in a fight like they already want to.
One of the best two-parters in all of Trek, IMO. Homefront and Paradise Lost, for anyone wondering. Excellent commentary on the US military and the scare tactics it uses to control citizens–and all of this almost six years before 9/11!
Don’t feel bad; Paradox games are (in)famously impenetrable. I wish I had a suggestion besides “play a lot and lose a lot” 🤷♀️ The only games I can think of with higher learning curves (more like learning cliffs) are EVE and Dwarf Fortress.
I’ve encountered that in Angband, one of the earliest (and still-developed!) roguelikes. It’s got 100 required dungeon levels, plus 20 beyond the final boss’s level (basically just for getting cooler loot), and so many of them are procedural oatmeal. Newer versions are better about that, introducing more variety so it’s not identical levels. Amusingly, the developers even lampshade this themselves: you get level feelings every level that tell you what the level has in terms of loot and dangerous enemies; if you go through the levels too quickly, the level feeling you’ll get is something like “looks like any other level”.
I dunno about the worlds you’re playing in, but resurrection magic tends to not be affordable or available to the general public. You don’t get access to it until fifth level spells, which 9th level. That’s around where most official 5e campaigns end, and most of the time you need thousands of gold in diamonds as a consumed material component. That’s nation-level wealth. Folks tend not to think about it this way because we’re all accustomed to the PC perspective, but really, by the time we get to that level each of us is a Jeff Bezos to the common folk.
I experienced a gay sauna for the first time a couple of days ago. I was anxious for a few minutes, until I got a feel for the place and let my towel expose me a bit. I had two encounters and both were fantastic. (If you’re following my previous post, I’m in the very beginning stages still…) However, both times, my partner...
You are not the only one! Absolutely no appeal for me, either, and I do not at all understand what people like about it. You want to do what? With your MOUTH? Are you crazy?
Sorry to hear about the mono, hope you’ve recovered!
