@actuallyautistic

So, folks, when a combination of autistic shutdown and a major depressive episode due ongoing stress hits you hard, when that final little (or not so little) straw yet again lands on your back... Do you have someone to turn to for help, you can count on?

Two of my closest peeps are dealing with some heavy poopoo themselves, so ain't gonna bother them, and not much they could do either, I recon. Just shut down totally for a couple of hours, like lights out, nobody working in the head office (the butterfly meme here with "Is this dissociating?) Woke up now, and I have no clue what to do, who to turn to (and yes, I've had social workers and nurses and all kinds of professional contacts, but alas, with this particular straw, nobody seems to be able or rather willing to help). Also, is there an "Actually Depressed" group? Seriously, if someone knows a good peer support chat for depression/the worse kind of depression, fling me a PM or something. My old one has pretty much died, no pun intended...

@actuallyautistic @undefined_variable If you’re in the UK, the Shout text service can be good but it’s staffed by volunteers so can be patchy when demand is high. I saw they were recruiting for more volunteers a while back, so could be worth a try.

@actuallyautistic @undefined_variable Ah sorry, wasn’t sure where you were. I must admit I found EMDR helpful rather than CBT if you’re going to approach therapy, if that helps any?

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@actuallyautistic @undefined_variable I have tried CBT but it didn’t touch the sides whatsoever.

@actuallyautistic do any of my autistic co-groupies have any tips for not losing weight over December / Christmas? The extra stress makes it harder to eat good portions for regular meals and my usual snack routine gets a knock too. I did manage to grab a small bowl of full fat ice-cream last night, which is not my usual supper, but seemed a reasonable compromise. Any other ideas?

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@kkffoo @actuallyautistic Full fat Greek yogurt, using coconut oil as spread for bread/sandwiches (with added toppings, natch), choosing to fry foods rather than grill or roast. Not healthy calories but easy ones!

How do my comrades cope with / handle / process grief?

Do you do it "differently"?

If so, you're not alone.

@actuallyautistic

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Calmly to begin with, usually the emotional processing takes a LOT longer than allistic emoting. I’ve had four relatives die in recent years, two uncomfortably recently and close in timing to each other. I get waves of grief and overwhelm only after having to do all the practical jobs first, which can be months after.

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@actuallyautistic @Susan60 @CynAq @theautisticcoach Can very much relate to these effects, both in bereavement and ‘diagnosis shock’. When first relative died, I had to support their partner, and only after they passed could I fully grieve the first loss as I’d been so focused on doing.

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic @CynAq Definitely: I wonder if this is too much hitting us at once, such as multiple simultaneous losses in later life, that causes confusion about what’s being grieved?

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@actuallyautistic @theautisticcoach @CynAq @Susan60 That sounds like you’re more aware of others’ needs because they instinctively know & communicate them more than we do. Wouldn’t assume rescuer status because of that, just that maybe your needs weren’t made clear from when young to learn to prioritise yourself? It’s laughable that autistic folk are deemed devoid of feelings!

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@Susan60 @CynAq @actuallyautistic @theautisticcoach Sadly a familiar and recurrent situation in ND folk of certain ages… But huge props for learning & readjusting when you became a mum. I’m not a mum - circumstances - but learned later when working with/for others got overwhelming. The cabin crew oxygen mask message is very relevant! 😉

Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 41 Saturday 9/12/23

TL:DR How long can this streak last ? ( I hope I haven’t jinxed it ! ) ; I never expected the Diagnostic Assessment to be such hard work, it’s worse than applying for a job, it’s worse than applying for a job in a high security location!

Well who’d a thunk - 3 days (nearly) on the trot of a fairly chilled Squirrel!

Up early, but having had a rough night I had a quick chat with my Bestie then went back to sleep.

Had a great NMS co-op session with CDP 🧚‍♀️ after breakfast, it was so much fun teaching someone else the tricks & bits n bobs, she was worried that I might get bored playing with a noob , but it was enormous fun !

Worked on my ASD assessment self-report form, today, & have started tracking trigger points & behaviour.
Boy am I set in my ways !
It’s weird , many of my routines are deeply based on logic, but are routines nonetheless !
There are 25 pages to this thing! I have until Tuesday afternoon ! (Which is probably why I spent the grand total of about an hour on it today 🙄🤦‍♂️ )

This afternoon & evening have flown past , the latter part of the day was taken up with catching up with a couple of topical satirical news shows & then Mrs Squirrel & I watched ‘The Creator’ which I can defo recommend to sci-fi fans, some slightly tongue in cheek nods to Star Wars, Blade Runner & Chappie !

Final Thoughts:

I am waiting for the other shoe to drop, it’s all going far too well!

I best get a fecking ASD diagnosis after all this work, I know me and oddly I will probably feel like a complete fraud & stranger still a complete failure if I don’t !

I hope I sleep tonight, I’ve had a few restless nights so far this week & need some decent sleep !

I love sci fi movies 😆

Thanks to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you ! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

@Tim_McTuffty @actuallyautistic Ah, sorry Tim - just catching up with your news. If you get stuck on your assessment or just want to ask anything, I’ve done that (a few years ago now, but been there!) 🐿️🤗

So does anyone else kinda not like ? Like, it’s a nice and easy way to begin a and it seems a lot of my friends also use it, the problem is instead of getting real people to do the voices they use text-to speech, which means you often do not get the correct . Like, often you get both a normal speed and a slow speed recordings of the pronunciation to pick from, and the two versions will often use completely different voices that not only have diffent quality, but also very different despite being the same words or sentences. It seems like the wrong way to learn a language. Also, what is up with the ? @actuallyautistic

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@actuallyautistic @NeurodivergentBC My OH loves Duolingo, and practices/plays it every day, but Im not so keen because of the weird phrases, lack of grammar explanation and the “game” focus. I used to love Memrise when keeping up my Japanese because it was really clear and more explanatory with video clips etc.

@actuallyautistic A quick question about unmasking:

I feel that one of the purposes of my masking was to maintain patience in social situations, so that I don't just say something really blunt because I am bored or annoyed by what someone is saying.

Is there an unmasked version of this? I am scared of people seeing me as unfriendly but also, my mask has always been about holding back what I want to say.

How do I stay amicable without masking? Is it possible?

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@nd_nb @twt @nddev @actuallyautistic Just started Martha Beck’s “The way of integrity” which is recommended by an autistic coach. Think this will cover how we can be more authentic and hence save energy, prevent burnout etc.

Just a few things I struggle with:

  • Having to put on a vivacious, inauthentic display of happiness at a moment’s notice.
  • Having to adjust to a new item coming into my possession.
  • Finding somewhere to put it.
  • Potentially having to change my plans/do something out of character to use the item.

@actuallyautistic

innervisioner,
@innervisioner@mastodonapp.uk avatar

@actuallyautistic @AutisticAdam Sounds like a lot of masking and overwhelm. I have to remind myself often that I’m not obligated to accept items that I don’t really want or need (lately often bc of inherited things). Remember to check in with your needs.

Fantastic album this. First one I've got with a locked groove at the end of each side. That threw me. LCD Soundsystem - American Dream @vinylrecords

@thegiddystitcher @knitting Ah, ace - always a nice effect with eyelets in socks though - especially with a variegated yarn! 🤩

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic it’s very much like that scene from “A Few Good Men” when Jack Nicholson says in court: “The truth?! you can’t handle the truth!!”. And we get punished for telling it all the time 😞.
