But also pairing with a robotics club t-shirt is about as good as it gets for cargo shorts. I’ve seen plenty of grown men rocking that uniform. If you’re into robotics, having all those pockets makes sense 😅
an analysis of historical video game availability shows that only 13% of classic video games are currently commercially available across consoles and time periods, and only 3% of games prior to 1985
I feel like a lot of people bitching about the circlejerking on Lemmy are actually just jealous of how much fun we are having and/or don’t have a great sense of humor. I haven’t laughed this frequently on the internet probably ever.
I’m a clever person who is enjoying the opportunity to participate in some erudite banter with like-minded individuals. Sue me.
Word, maybe you could start by joining a photography community and waiting for that to gather enough steam to branch out into something more specialized.
Sub.rehab, lemmyverse.net, and browse.feddit.de are all very helpful tools for finding new communities.
You make good points. People could afford to be more accepting and patient.
But it’s also inevitable that the people on a more niche platform will judge the people on a mainstream platform. That’s just human nature, and it doesn’t turn people away as much as you imply. For everyone who’s turned off by the condescension, there’s another person who’s curious whether it’s justified.
while actively keeping them away lol
I mean, the numbers clearly indicate that 99.99% of reddit users have never made an account on Lemmy. I don’t think people are being pushed away, I think they are simply lazy and short sighted, and also waiting for the dust to settle.
Reddit was the most elitist site on the planet for much of its existence, and it never posed a problem for growth.
There is a pretty wide sweet spot between 100k users and 100 million. I think most of us agree that Lemmy shouldn’t be trying to be a reddit killer, but that doesn’t contradict the fact that we still need to grow the userbase by orders of magnitude.
I’m loving this phase, don’t get me wrong, but I have a feeling that by the time we hit 1 million or 5 million it’ll be even more enoyable here. We have a longggg way to go before we have to worry about becoming too big.
If Lemmy isn’t the answer then I’m not sure what hope we have. This seems like a perfect storm and I doubt there will be a better alternative coming any time soon.
One of my concerns is that we are running out of people who remember the pre-corporate internet at this rate. This platform has a gaping hole of Gen Z users as far as I can tell. Many of them never experienced the internet when it was cool, so they don’t have any particular dissatisfaction with the curated dopamine drip feed it has been turned into.
It just feels like this is the moment to revive that original dream of the internet for a new generation. Let’s make it happen here so we can take credit for it 😅
It seems this was meant to be a response to the parent comment. Or maybe you’ve done that intentionally to highlight the need for improved UX 😅
Tbh I don’t think it matters all that much. Exclusivity is cool. Plus reddits idea of UX is literally just plastering advertisements all over your feed. Seems pretty easy to beat that out in the long run, it’ll just take some time to catch up. They had a 15 year head start
Not sure but there’s like 20 different apps and web apps in various states of development, along with Lemmy itself. I’m sure it’ll come sooner rather than later.
Nobody can trust the news. That’s not nonsense, it’s a fact. There are no reliable news sources.
You can either deal with it or pretend that the source you find most comforting is the absolute truth and totally unbiased. But then you’d be lying to yourself, which is usually what makes people get defensive 🤔
I think we are just saying that whatever generic, non offensive form of media that you consume is also biased in ways that you can’t quite perceive. You’ve encountered some alternative narratives on Lemmy and you regard them as biased without necessarily making the connection that your own news outlets and views are equally biased. It’s easy to see bias in others but hard to see in yourself

I’m just saying getting stuff from Empress is no worse than getting it from a corporation. She’s going to be equally crazy whether you download her cracks or not, at least she’s not exploiting child labor or destroying the environment in the process.
They’re still small but the admin has a pretty solid setup so it’s definitely a fast server with room for growth. Just figured a lot of people don’t even know it exists yet.

I don't think many people understand that if they use Lemmy or kbin, they are posting to the fediverse. There are other platforms and will be more to come. Referring to a post on "Lemmy" or "kbin" is like saying you saw a post on your Windows or Mac computer....
This comment was very helpful when I first joined. Long story short, each server is locally storing data for its own users and communities, and also for external communities that at least one user is subscribed to.
Everything is either self or donor funded, and it is my understanding that this model can scale quite a bit without a crazy amount of donations.
But if we get into instances with over a million users, I’m not sure when/if the donor funded model eventually breaks down. That’ll be a good problem to have though, because it means this platform will have been a massive success.

Hi from Lemmy! I hadn’t been able to federate here before and my comments weren’t showing up but now it’s working.
I didn’t know about all that WOTC was doing to DnD but I am familiar with them because I used to play Heroscape. That’s absolutely fucked and you have my sympathy.
The good news is that we are on the verge of building something that we own on Lemmy, where corporations won’t be able to fuck with us as much.
Meta doesn’t get to decide. We do. That’s what I love so much about Lemmy.
The day this instance federates with Meta is the day I leave. They, and any other big corporations, can fuck all the way off. We have seen where that path leads time and time again.
Yeah there’s a big difference between spreading the word on an individual basis and broadcasting something on a national media outlet. The latter is just obnoxious and directly harmful to the community. Good on you for calling it out.

Aren’t all search engines kinda shit compared to 10 years ago?
I think it’s because malicious actors have gotten more sophisticated at influencing the search results and also Google stopped giving a shit. If there’s something out there that can give me 2010 Google level results, hook me up.
But I have been feeling like search engines are going extinct for a while. When the majority of content on the internet was real, search engines were useful. Now that the majority of content is fake and monetized, it becomes increasingly difficult for search engines to return helpful results. No matter how well optimized the algorithm, it’s like searching for a needle in a haystack.
