I caught myself loads of times scrolling on Reddit while not even paying attention, or while scrolling on Reddit to then close it immediately opening Reddit again to continue scrolling....
Same. But even before that I was spending a ton of time as a regular user trying to generate activity. I think I’m finally starting to relax a little bit because Lemmy seems to be stabilizing. Growth has slowed but the core users are more active than ever, and people are starting to form sustainable communities. It feels so right to be a part of this.
i’m doing it because I want to make the fediverse more friendly place, in hopes of making it more welcoming for new users, and the nicer place in general. But I wonder how much is just less bots.
That’s true, but Lemmy could potentially be different. The fact that it’s a federation means some instances can go mainstream and become more like reddit, and others can be more exclusive and try to preserve their atmosphere/culture.
I’m baffled by the pushback from some users, I guess people still have PTSD from reddit. From a Lemmy-centric mindset, participating in this is an easy layup to grow the userbase. But we don’t have much time and we don’t have many users so it’ll probably have to be modest.
I strongly disagree. If everyone on Lemmy went to reddit for every second of r/place, that’d barely even make a blip on their engagement numbers. On the other hand, we can potentially grow this platform by quite a lot if we can draw just a bit of attention.
It’s a bit silly to turn down an easy opportunity to grow Lemmy as a way to spite Reddit. If you really don’t care about reddit anymore, then there is no issue with using it to find people that can help contribute to the growing communities here.
Hard to imagine that the clicks will make a difference, they have hundreds of millions of users. If we give them 1% more clicks and grow Lemmy by 100%, that’s a worthwhile trade-off.
You really think they want advertisements for “the new Reddit” all over their IPO showcase project?
So this post from lemmynsfw.com just popped up in my feed. It is not tagged as nsfw although it obviously is. I have tried attaching a screenshot but Jerboa throws an error. I have nsfw material turned off in my account settings, so this wouldn’t happen if the post would be tagged properly. I’m using Jerboa. I could just ban...
I can confirm that there are still federation issues. Even purging comments does not always federate to other instances. But this comment explains the situation quite well.
Memes matter. You wouldn’t think so, but they actually do.
Lemmy.world is the biggest and most active instance by far. But calling it a default is not accurate.
If a default emerges, that’s a problem for the platform. Federation works best when there are many valid, major instances with slightly different flavors.
But I will admit that lemmy.world is carrying the activity of the platform, without their userbase we would be in trouble.
Same. I have switched between the two several times, but I started on Firefox for a long time before switching, and now I’ve been back on Firefox for at least 5 years. There was definitely a good stretch of chrome in the early 2010s though.
Firefox is well clear by now. I’m also using the Android version, and I think it’s great.
Vivaldi looks cool, and I have heard tell that Mozilla is far from its former glory, but my user experience on Firefox is excellent so I have no reason to switch
most people i know use google by searching whatever question they have and including the word “reddit” at the end to find reddit threads since it currently has the most useful information....
Yeah, a whole-house fan. You turn it on in the evening and it expels hot attic air from the top while sucking in cool fresh air through open windows. It actually works really well and is much more energy efficient than AC. When it gets super hot you still need AC though.
Lol! Also worthing noting that federation is not yet working perfectly, and there are legitimate reasons why your choice of instance matters a great deal.
Many instances are not yet properly configured and there is a real barrier to joining and participating in communities on other servers. This is a good thing, because it means that Lemmy can get even better in the future.
I enjoy Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup played in the terminal with ASCII graphics. I wonder whether there are other hidden gems out there which don’t get attention because they are “ugly”?
It does have a certain charm. I never really played that much tbh, my favorite part was reading the sagas of fortresses on the forums. Those were always so unpredictable and hilarious.
I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...
I agree. I’m not getting nearly as much content over here, but I don’t miss it at all. I didn’t realize how much of my time on reddit was spent “hate-reading”. It has totally transformed the way I use the internet; I almost never commented on reddit.
Lemmy has been an absolute revelation for me. I was so lucky to find it early on and I want to share this experience so others can have the same happiness. Just waiting for the developers to iron things out first before I try to recruit my normie friends 😅
I think I’ve settled on the latter. Disagreement is maybe best communicated by the absence of an upvote? And downvotes work best when they signal something that is just off base, and while not reportable, is not appreciated at a broad cultural level.
Most people on Lemmy right now are not using them in that way. As we grow, misuse of downvotes will almost certainly become more common, but right now people are self-policing their behavior for the most part
Hmm, that is a good point. I really wish Beehaw would refederate with SJW so we could benefit from their activity and experience more. I don’t agree with every decision they make but they certainly have insightful takes at times
But as an intelligent person, you can also discriminate between something that doesn’t convince you personally, and something that is completely without value or irrelevant.
When you refrain from downvoting in the former instance, you contribute to a more healthy discussion. Not every person that I disagree with is a bad person; similarly, not every comment that I disagree with is a bad comment.
Same man. But you hit the nail on the head, regardless of how you upvote or downvote, its usually even better to just make a comment and explain your thoughts, respectfully of course.
I’m also wary of potential downsides though. I think in smaller communities it could be a problem because people might start fights with each other when they check who downvoted them. But I’m not sure, at least now we have a good test environment on kbin, and so far it seems to be beneficial based on what you’re saying.
Totally agree. I’m just trying to brainstorm possible issues that may crop up in the future. Many times, the solution to a problem simply introduces a different problem.
Although as I’m considering it, the ease of making alts on this platform mitigates any potential issues, because the whole thing can be sidestepped by downvoting with an alt.
Overall, probably couldn’t hurt to bring that functionality to Lemmy and see how it goes.
I am not some teacher grading essays and giving points for good structure.
That’s exactly my point. You are not the ultimate judge of what is good and what is bad. I’m not telling you to upvote things you disagree with, I’m simply telling you to not downvote unless it’s clearly not relevant.
All of your comments on this thread are good comments that I disagree with. Sometimes, disagreement leads to growth.
It appears that @admin has been busy at his job recently and hasn’t had much spare time. He also ran into some issues upgrading to 0.18.1.
I don’t this it’s necessary to desticky this just yet, as it is of paramount importance to get smaller instances up and running at this stage. These comments and the posts on the server itself explain the situation well enough. If he’s still on 0.17.4 in a few weeks then I would probably agree with you, and I appreciate you bringing it to people’s attention.
do you also spend a lot less time on Lemmy compared to Reddit?
I caught myself loads of times scrolling on Reddit while not even paying attention, or while scrolling on Reddit to then close it immediately opening Reddit again to continue scrolling....
I feel like Fediverse users are nicer to each other and more generous with upvotes than reddit.
i’m doing it because I want to make the fediverse more friendly place, in hopes of making it more welcoming for new users, and the nicer place in general. But I wonder how much is just less bots.
Add Lemmy to Reddit r/place (feddit.de)
For anyone who still has the reddit app: Lets convert some Redditors to our side by replacint one of the fuckspez to “join-lemmy.org”
Hey lemmings, we should do a lemmy place to compete with r/place.
What do you guys think? It would definitely help bring more attention to Lemmy
Looking for some entertainment tomorrow? Reddit is launching r/place again. Should be fun to watch (www.theverge.com)
