Okay, that makes more sense, I was trying to figure out what had changed in the past week. I’m very curious to see how that data would look for other servers too. I think it’s more logical to count users even if they don’t post or comment, because they are still a critical part of the whole ecosystem if they browse and vote regularly. Even without saying anything, their thoughts and opinions help shape the content and discourse through voting.
And for that matter, weekly active users and daily active users would be two other interesting datapoints. You can see the daily and weekly users on the sidebar of instances, but I don’t know of any tool/site that scrapes all of that info and displays it in an easily digestible format.
Totally agree. Even when two commenters are replying to one another, there is always another layer where they are also addressing everyone in the thread/community/instance/fediverse, which obviously includes lurkers.
The votes shape everything about the platform, so ignoring the lurkers in the stats feels like it’s missing an important data point.
If you look closely, the downward trend actually stopped before the change in stats. We dipped below 33,000 in mid-November, but then started hovering above 33,000 for multiple weeks until the bump.
Merry Happy! I posted a few days ago asking for help with a prelit tree that had entire portions not lighting up, or flickering like crazy. It was a crack tree situation and I could not find anything helpful on my own and you wonderful people came together and saved Christmas/ yamainwitch-mas. I was literally ready to just throw...
But Jesus had to die for our sins so that he could be resurrected and ascend back to divinity. So technically Judas was the hero because he made it all possible. So he’s actually in heaven because he helped save humankind.
Honestly, people really don’t understand the Bible nowadays but it makes perfect sense to me 🙃
That’s a very interesting question and I’m not sure of the answer.
Obviously on some level, the cost of the infrastructure scales with the number of people using it. But so does the ability to crowdfund, if there are 100x more instances then theoretically there would be 100x more potential donors to meet the cost.
One clear way to influence the scaling in our favor would be to utilize instances with clear themes and purposes. If everybody on a particular instance is interested in the same content, that reduces the wasted computational resources compared to an instance where all of the users are interested in different topics, and thus subscribed to a much wider variety of communities.
My intuition is that as long as the platform only hosts text and images, the costs should be manageable, especially with inevitable improvements to computational efficiency that are likely to come as Lemmy matures. For instance, I believe there is some kind of patch that reduces storage utilization that should be shipping with the next version (0.19).
I distinctly remember my first encounter with Catradora_Stalinism. She epitomizes hexbear, in many ways. This is honestly relatively mild, in comparison to her entire body of work.
I really like lemmy and have stopped using reddit months ago. My only real gripe with lemmy is the title: when a conversation gets going in the comment section, that gets killed when the post is deleted, for whatever reason. I can’t even go back to a conversation and have a look at the comment threads to “dwell in...
Totally agree. It also happens when a comment is removed and the whole tree of replies gets cut off at that point and is no longer viewable. It’s definitely technically feasible because admins can still see removed posts/comments and all the replies, so I would imagine it’s just a matter of time until the developers can get around to implementing that functionality for normal users.
I jump between kbin and Lemmy fairly often, and it just seems like most content/communities end up settling on Lemmy. Which kbin communities do you actually think are better than the alternatives?...
Yeah I’ve kind of been waiting for federation to start working better before exploring kbin communities. The lack of moderation is already bad, but I have also experienced comments/votes not federating for hours or sometimes not ever. It’s very frustrating to make a contribution to the discussion and then come back the next day and realize no one actually saw it because it didn’t federate properly.
Thank you for all you do. Even though I primarily use Lemmy, I have noticed that the kbin users I see over here tend to be really thoughtful and positive contributors. I’m looking forward to better integration between the two platforms, because I feel that it will add real value to the communities on both sides and potentially unlock another stage of growth for the threadiverse.
Don’t go burning yourself out though, I’m happy to wait as long as it takes 😇
I’d save RFK and give him a full two-term presidency. Just because I’ve always wondered how much a difference it would have made in the course of American history. It definitely seems like things took a severe turn for the worse in the late 60s and the American political system has never recovered.
I personally believe there were conspiracies to assassinate both him and JFK because they were not susceptible to being controlled by their donors or political mentors, as is the case with the vast majority of politicians. They were rogue elements with a strong potential to disrupt the status quo (i.e. gravy train) for the rest of the oligarchy, so they got taken out.
I wasn’t alive for these events and I am possibly missing context. But I just see an inflection point in the 60s and I don’t know if another term from Carter in 1980 would have been enough to turn things around. I also feel like he was a less impactful character than RFK
The TSA is just a federal jobs program. They don’t actually provide any value; it’s been demonstrated that they miss the vast majority of contraband. The most notable function of the TSA is the temporary imposition of an authoritarian-esque environment of suspicion and control on innocent civilians, reminding us to follow the rules, or else.
My sister is 23 and still dresses up and goes out knocking doors for candy… and I find it weird but I let her do her. It got me thinking, at what age do you think someone should stop Trick r Treating at? Just curious.
The admins of your logged-in instance can delete any post of yours they want. This is not us doing it. The Lemmy UI is pretty bad at showing this. On some servers, an admins actions are listed as “mod” in the modlog even though we didn’t do it.
Maybe try sorting by new or top 6 hours while viewing all. Then scroll all the way through and see if this post appears.
It’s possible that other communities are simply more upvoted and active, if you’re sorting by active or top day. NCD is medium size, it could definitely be drowned out when viewing all. I always view subscribed so I’m not sure.
Here is our regular update that explains what we have been working on for the past two weeks. This should allow average users to keep up with development, without reading Github comments or knowing how to program....
The fediverse offers an exciting alternative to centralized social media silos like Twitter and Facebook. As someone passionate about the fediverse, I think a lot about what features would make up my perfect social media platform. I’m curious what ideas other fediverse users have!...
I disagree. I believe the function of upvotes and downvotes is self-evident, and if you are unable to handle the emotional ramifications that come along with that, you are welcome to disable downvotes within your instance, like hexbear already does.
Voting is a core feature of reddit and Lemmy. If you remove that, you end up with an entirely different kind of social media site.
For the record, I upvoted you because you make a good point. Voting doesn’t have to be toxic if the userbase understands the etiquette.
You make very good points. The beautiful thing about the fediverse is it doesn’t have to be all or nothing, different servers can try different solutions and mix and match whatever seems to be working best.
Sh.itjust.works has the best damn users in the fediverse. We should have inter-instance contests so we could whoop you guys. Our AI art team is ranked first in the Fediverse.
Lol all good. It’s hard for me to talk shit about dbzer0 so we can just call it a stalemate. I appreciate your loyalty to your server because I feel similarly about mine.
I’ve wanted a badge that shows the instance uptime and couldn’t find any, so I created one. It’s available at uptime.lemmings.world/{your-domain}.svg and gets its data from fediverse.observer....
Familiar faces resurfacing is nice and only possible on a smaller sized platform. Or clicking someones profile only to see a post I previously saw or commemted on.
Yeah I am amazed by the personal interactions and connections that I’ve formed here, they’ve been the most rewarding part of Lemmy for me. There is not a single redditor who would recognize my reddit account after 10+ years on the platform, but I’m sure there’s a good number of Lemmings who already recognize me, and indeed know me, or at least the personality I express online.
Treasure these times, because someday Lemmy will outgrow this phase if we start getting much larger.
Lemmy has a lot of issues and the only reason I persevere, is because I’m a glutton for punishment and simply hate Spez even more.
Lol well said and I totally agree. But I would be lying if I didn’t mention that at least some of my reason for being here is to have a chance at being a part of something that has a positive impact on the world. Wanting to spite reddit is definitely a part of it, but there is also a large part of my motivation that comes from my fantasies about what Lemmy could one day become, which don’t really have anything to do with reddit.
And finally, smaller reddit subs have far saner voting. Here on Lemmy there’s a lot more “I don’t understand this, so I’m downvoting because replying would require using my brain”.
Hadn’t really picked up on this consciously but now that you mention it, it’s absolutely true in my experience.
We are definitely still struggling with a relatively sizeable portion of toxic, disagreeable users that came here during the reddit exodus. But we have a critical mass of decent people that are currently battling through that obstacle, and as soon as we get another wave of growth, that problem should become much less prevalent, simply due to dilution.
Haha you’re preaching to the choir, the idea of federation has taken over my thinking a little bit. It’s like those people who want to put everything on the blockchain, except I want to federate every hierarchical structure that exists 😅
I never even moderated anything before Lemmy, but it really hasn’t been that bad. It helps so much to have other good users/mods to lean on, and to have faith that the platform is steadily getting better with time.
It’s way less bullshit than reddit was, and I’d rather be shit on by principled leftists anyway.
I won’t lie, I did get a bit down after the hexbear federation saga, but I feel like I’m starting to get my mojo back. When I see other users and developers building things like fediseer, it renews my motivation and refreshes my attitude. Infectious positivity, what a concept!
We’ll get there. It turns out that it’s more difficult than many of us realized to build a new social media site from scratch without any VC funding. It’s going to be a long and arduous journey, but I think we have already navigated the most dangerous leg and built a strong foundation.
Large scale movements of people take a very long time. We are on the vanguard, which can be a bit lonely but will ultimately turn out to be an extremely rewarding experience if Lemmy eventually does grow much larger.
