I’m a systems librarian in an academic library. I moved over the Lemmy after Rexxit 2023. I’ve had an account on sdf.org since 2009 (under a different username), and so I chose this instance out of a sense of nostalgia. I do all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, cross stitch, sewing) and love dogs.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

I’m also a shitty mod and will disappear for weeks at a time. I only have experience modding a small subreddit and have no familiarity with Lemmy’s mod tools. Feel free to hit me up.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That would likely affect people that use screen-readers, too.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah, but I bet the dumpster or poop bin is on the other side of the yard or parking lot.

Can I tempt you over to Notepad++?

grysbok,

I want it closed, but the dog wants it open and his litter box is in the hallway. So, open it is.

I’m a fan of OnShape. It has parametric modeling, and is free (if you don’t mind your designs being visible by everyone).

I’m still technically a mod for a small subreddit. I polled the users, they weren’t interested in moving over to Lemmy.

(Edit because prematurely posted)

I’m still hoping they’ll move over, but tbh it’s a good bunch of posters on a niche subject and the mod team has never had to be too active. The topic had a been literally unmodded for years before the current mod team fell into it, so I’m confident we’re not needed.

We’re literally just a placeholder to keep someone power mad from becoming mod. (Long story long: founding mod abandoned sub, came back after years, was mad the subreddit didn’t agree with his crap opinions, made the sub private, I and a few other posters made a new subreddit.)

@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah, longevity and name recognition are why I went with sdf.org. They’ve been running many-user services for decades, even if the Lemmy service is pretty new.

ETA: they’ve been around since BBSes. I’m on a wicked nerdy old-school geek instance, and I love my local communities.

My head canon is that it was “exclusive” before. That just tickles my jimmies.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Not the person you’re replying to, but my guess is that “transition” implies some sort of inner journey, but transitioning is often really about changing how the world views you. You’re still the woman, man, or non-binary entity you always were, you’re just making changes to encourage/force everyone else to see you the same way.

Welp, that’s my vocabulary lesson for the day. Screenshot:

Also, the dino in the upper right is cute.

Yeah, it’s one of those weird questions that you don’t know if it’s social (“eh, fine”) or clinical (“well, my lower back’s been hurting ever since I turned 30, but that’s not why I’m here. I’m here because tripped, fell face-into-arm, and bit myself and the internet tells me I need a tetanus shot, but now I’m worried you’ll put me down for ‘self-harm’ and have me involuntarily committed and oh no did I say that out loud?”).

I wish people would write some descriptions for their communities

I often browse /all, come across a post that looks interesting but I have no clue what’s it about, so I check the sidebar - and all I find is “An unofficial Lemmy community for X”, " A place to discuss everything about X", or the best kind, “A continuation of r/X from Reddit”....

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Tbh, I’m surprised that community is about trees. I was expecting an r/marijuanaenthusiasts situation.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

They get really repetitive and don’t add much to the conversation.

I debated adding a picture of my dog, but that felt like a bit much. Also, I never spent time on forums that allowed images in .sigs . They looked nightmarish.

It’s not easy getting a pill down an unwilling animal’s throat.

The sidebar shows that 90 people have subscribed to images of mythical animals being medicated.

Almond milk or nonfat powdered milk. I’m a monster.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Oh, it’s better with the powdered milk. Plus if you fill your mug too high with coffee the milk takes up almost no space. The only downside is that if you don’t stir well the powdered milk can clump into these cheese-textured lumps.

@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Have you tried the “turn all your clothes hangers around so they hang backwards, then get rid of anything that’s still wrong ways around after X time” trick?

Yeah, me, too. I just ended up with wonky hangers and an attachment to the stuff I never wore because I kept checking the hangers and seeing it.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Not true. When I first got my cell phone I was charged for sms texts, both sending and receiving.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Around 2010. This is in the US.

I think near-universal unlimited texting is a fairly new (last decade) thing. Take a look at this 2008 CNET article: www.cnet.com/culture/the-rising-cost-of-texting/ . They’re talking about a cost increase, but acting like paying is to be expected.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

You could take a length of yarn (maybe 5 inches?) in a matching color, string it through the dropped stitch so it doesn’t fall down further, then weave in the ends.

This would disrupt the pattern, but it’s an option if it’s somewhere not too visible and I didn’t want to redo a lot of work (say, I’d noticed after binding off or something)

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s a rough world out there. Let them enjoy childhood while they can!

(assuming good intent) I’ve had good luck with online secondhand marketplaces. I know my sizes in my preferred brands.

I’ve had the best luck with shoes–my favorite brand only has a few base models and doesn’t take returns once the shoe’s been worn outside. So, it’s easy to search for, say, [brand] size 6.5 loafer and be certain they’ll fit like my other size 6.5 loafers.

Seconding–neat article. The Connecticut house looks spot-on. Kentucky… not so much.

In connect there is an option to always show the instance. screenshot of option

(swapping apps) Liftoff seems to show username@non-local-instances by default, but omits the instance if the user is on your instance.

I didn’t find anything helpful in Jerboa for this use case.

I’ve taught multiple college students how to copy and paste.

How many people here have actually used XMPP?

With all the current discussion about the threat that Instagram Threads has on the Fediverse and that article about how Google Embrace Extend Extinguished XMPP, I was left very confused, since that was the first time I’ve heard that Gchat supported XMPP or what XMPP actually is, and I’ve had my personal Gmail since beta (no,...

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I used it. I don’t remember if my first jabber account was on Google or not, but I used the pidgin IM client to communicate with friends on ICQ, Gchat, AOL, and IRC. Then when Google removed jabber support I couldn’t use my pidgin to connect to my Gchat anymore.

grysbok,
@grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I don’t think I’ll delete my account or comments. There’s a lot of memories there. I’ve said a lot of nice things to nice people. Reddit was one of the places I grieved for my father. And I didn’t have my act together enough to download my comment/post history before the third-party export tools stopped working.

Do you find that you're on the fed more than you were on r/ just because you're really really excited to watch your favorite communities become more active?

I do, but as more people join I’m also feeling a little republican - i got my spot and this is good; everyone on the outside can go fuck off now. I don’t want it to get so big that it’s what we left. No intended disrespect or lack of acknowledgment to those who were here before.

Hello, fellow normal human-type person. It is pleasant to engage in average human behavior with other humans. Imagine that I am petting a dog because I have a dog in my lap and am petting him.

I do have shoes! How did you know? I wear them sometimes when I am inside and my feet hands are cold. They are fluffy and maroon. I got them from [insert store name here]. I got a good deal! My only complaint with Connect is that I’m using the dark theme, and so having a big white “refreshed” bar show up when I pull down my feed is jarring. I like jerboa’s cute spinny wheel better.

But, if that’s my biggest complaint ¯*(ツ)*/¯
