Debian based, arch based, rhel based are all somewhat different and have different package managers (with flatpak, appimage and snap that might be less important nowadays though)
Nobara comes with all the stuff for gaming, not everyone who uses Linux knows exactly what they need to install themselves
NixOS is fantastic and drastically different from all the others
NixOS, silverblue, vanilla are all immutable which makes a massive difference
Also not everyone wants to install their own DE, so if they want something like cinnamon, pantheon, KDE they need a distro that comes with it preinstalled
Hello linix@lemmy, I got fixed on the idea of replacing my iPad with a 2in1 like the thibkpad X13 for uni since I use the keyboard with my iPad a lot. It’s like email, you have a bunch of different providers who all talk to each other but are run by different people Or phone/text, everyone’s got a different provider but everyone can message everyone
I just buy durable phones, I very rarely drop them nowadays but if I do the worst that happens is a scratch or dent. Last two times I’ve broken a phone have been jumping in a pool forgetting it was in my pocket (usually buy waterproof for this reason) and falling on a rock with it in my pocket
First one no case would have prevented short of one of the ultra rugged outdoorsey ones, second one only the cases with the front cover flap thing might have stopped
Only time I’ve broken a phone by dropping it is when I had an iPhone 4 handmedown, I swear those things were designed to break
I’ve been using the Niagara launcher, think it’s the one I like the most so far but not very customisable and no way to turn off the alphabet thing completely which I don’t like
I’m sure some people like it. Personally I find it far faster to just type the name of the app than find the right letter, then hunt for the application
I think the problem there is that if the fediverse were to be adopted by the masses the general population wouldn’t pay attention/wouldn’t even care and just use whatever instance was most convenient for them, and if an insurance has a large proportion of users it inherently has power over the entire network
If meta entered properly like everyone thought they might, they could massively control the entire fediverse by threatening defederation with instances that don’t comply with their rules. Because they have so many users and generate so much content no instance wants to be cut off
That example probably wouldn’t work for the fediverse as it stands right now as we’re pretty much all nerds, dislike companies like meta and probably wouldn’t enjoy the content generated by its users anyway but it stands as an example
I get that, that was the whole point of that comment is the likes of us wouldn’t want to interact with Facebook but as I said that’s just an example.
Imagine the chaos if Reddit implemented activitypub, or discord with their threads feature, or even just a new instance like world that snaps up a lot of users for one reason or another, plays it safe for a while and acts benign until they’ve got the bulk of the users and then starts imposing their rules on other instances
I have been experimenting with react native as I heard it’s one of the good ones, and so far it is not a particularly enjoyable experience. Lots of irritating things like no global styling, lots of ugly, hard to read properties on tags, etc...
Yeah that’s what I usually do, tbh frontend frameworks seem kinda pointless to me. You’d think they’d be an improvement on regular js but no
The issue is making it a mobile app, as that’s the primary platform for this project (though might be better to just make it a PWA instead of using react native
Hi, bth I never played fortnite, but I tried PUBG Mobile and COD Mobile and I honestly enjoyed the Battle Royale gameplay, and I think I’m kinda good at it given the number of times I’ve won, but I got tired of those games needing to download a shit ton of content and trying to make me pay for shit, so I haven’t played in...
Bare in mind in this world this has been the case since the dawn of time, we’re not plopping existing humans with existing human physiology into this world
People would’ve adapted to live under these conditions to begin with so they wouldn’t be immediately crushed
Preventing long term damage would be on a similar level to ergonomic chairs, keyboards etc in extending and improving someone’s life
I suppose as for states of matter, higher gravity areas would likely have higher air pressure, be hotter and more humid
I’m writing this as someone who has mostly lived in the US and Canada. Personally, I find the whole “lying to children about Christmas” thing just a bit weird (no judgment on those who enjoy this aspect of the holiday). I like that it’s kind of the wild west, there’s no single way to do anything and you’re sort of on your own with it, which also means you’re free to do whatever you want with it.
Choose what software you do or don’t want, delete important system files if you really want to, break stuff and be allowed to fix it yourself rather than a company telling you what you can and can’t do with your own computer
As long as it stays like that it’s good how it is
More of the few games remaining that don’t run on Linux via proton making the slightest effort to support it would be nice though
I didn’t even realise there was a native Linux build. Often surprises me when I look for proton settings for one reason and another only to realise it’s not using proton
Often actually change it to force proton and the windows version though as it actually tends to run better
I’m really not sure even Microsoft could get away with that
The moment a subscription service comes into play for something they take for granted as free people will start looking at alternatives. Chromebooks and macbooks exist and from what I hear Chromebooks are starting to become serious competition for Windows
Plus Linux desktop obviously getting more user friendly and preinstalled on laptops
