drmoose,

People on Threads are still delusioned that it’s different from Twitter lol

drmoose,

Honestly, it’s totally fair imo.
People who hadn’t experience before-Spotify times can’t really appreciate the value. I’d love all information to be free and all but just the indexing and data hosting service would be worth 11$/mo. People being a bit silly here ngl. If you can’t afford 11$ for this service then honestly you either don’t need it or you need re-evaluate your budgeting.

drmoose,

Smartphone games are being just rushed by russians too. All these garbage p2w sinks are becoming really popular with bored russian upper class. The vacation to europe is cancelled might as well drop 2000$ to bully some people in this casual game to feel better about myself sort of vibes. Nasty.

drmoose,

the argument for .ml domain has always been absurd to begin with. So it’s free but the price you pay is that it’s being run by Mali. I’d just drop 8$/year tbh, that’s not a hill you want to die for. Also you harm your project by being SEO punished for using spam-associated TLDs like this. One of the reasons original Lemmy took so long to adopt until Reddit’s API drama. Pretty dumb ngl.

drmoose,

That’s not true at all. ML was used as an idiological choice as it’s the only free TLD you can get and you should not have to pay for a domain name as per Lemmy’s creators ideology.

drmoose,

It’s not anonymous. In fact because it’s free it requires more data to prevent someone from acquiring all of the domain names.

Where do you get your gaming news?

I was wondering where everyone went to get news, reviews, trailers, etc. IGN has always left a bad taste in my mouth with their seemingly bias reviews. I used to go to the gaming, games, Xbox, and a couple other smaller niche subreddits to gather the vast majority of the info. Now I’d like some advice on what others favorite...

drmoose,

Google News tbh. I find most gaming news outlets pretty bad so it’s hard to follow a single target so I just read the headlines and follow up on youtube if it’s something worth looking into.

Weirdly enough I find a lot of great stuff on TikTok these days. Especially regarding indie games. Lots of creators sharing their game dev experience too.

drmoose,

@yousuckatcooking - entertaining cooking and legit recipes!
@fortnine - amazing quality motorbike channel. Even if you don’t ride its very educational and entertaining.

drmoose,

Diablo IV new season has started! I’m only few hours in but it’s quite fun so far. Lots of people so live events are much more full. Weirdly enough the servers seem to be more stable too. I still hadn’t had much luck with the new gimmick of putting hearts into your rings but it seems fun. The battlepass is quite interesting too. The season 0 lacked direction I feel unless you we’re really hard core - now it’s more approachable for casual market.

The Outer Worlds came up on humblebundle choice this much and I’ve just reached the second zone in the game and honestly it’s awesome. People were reviewing that it’s quite shallow and underdeveloped but I kinda like smaller feel. The story and production is entertaining - it feels like Fallout but more wackey. Some parts do feel like it could use more “RPG” though. Like the first big choice of the game didn’t feel that impactful.

drmoose,

Kinda hilarious tbh. No kid today is going “to a website”. kid mini game apps are off the charts now (Roblox, HypeHype etc.) and Neopets clearly wants to dip into that but that’s clearly not the way to do it. Is it for the parents?

What's something you used to do/see/say but don't anymore because you don't feel it's right?

Me personally? I’ve become much less tolerant of sexist humor. Back in the day, cracking a joke at women’s expense was pretty common when I was a teen. As I’ve matured and become aware to the horrific extent of toxicity and bigotry pervading all tiers of our individualistic society, I’ve come to see how exclusionarly and...

drmoose,

I honestly don’t think it’s ableism. Languages evolve and retarded doesn’t mean a mental condition it literally means “dumb”. Most people don’t even know “lame” is related to a movement conditions and if you did a statistical analysis 99% of use cases are not related to the “original meaning”. People are just ignorant of how language works, especially since English is a global language.

How to de-radicalize my mom's youtube algorithm?

She’s almost 70, spend all day watching q-anon style of videos (but in Spanish) and every day she’s anguished about something new, last week was asking us to start digging a nuclear shelter because Russia was dropped a nuclear bomb over Ukraine. Before that she was begging us to install reinforced doors because the...

drmoose,

Make her a new account, pre-train it with some wholesome stuff and explicitly block some shit channels.

How many people here have actually used XMPP?

With all the current discussion about the threat that Instagram Threads has on the Fediverse and that article about how Google Embrace Extend Extinguished XMPP, I was left very confused, since that was the first time I’ve heard that Gchat supported XMPP or what XMPP actually is, and I’ve had my personal Gmail since beta (no,...

drmoose,

When I managed to connect my Pidgin to all networks some-years-ago it was amazing. Everyone thought I was a wizard.

drmoose,

I don’t it’s a fair assessment - dude was just a kid.

I’ve watched some podcasts and interviews and I think he’s a much more complex of a person. I do genuinely think he’s thinks he’s doing good and I do think that Meta stuff is a net benefit to the humanity.

Even if you hate Facebook it brought people together in so many places, especially if you consider developing world.

drmoose,

I know that Boost for Reddit had this view and now the dev is working on porting the app for Lemmy. It’s just the matter of time then I guess.

What's with all the NordVPN hate?

I see people say that NordVPN is a bad choice all the time, but I've never seen any credible evidence that they're not trustworthy. Can anyone provide any sources with valid reasons to avoid their service? I only know that they had some servers hacked in 2018, but it seems as though they took that very seriously and upgraded...

drmoose,

AFAIK those commercials are made by the content creators themselves and Nord just gives them a guidelines doc, right?

It's true that VPN doesn't do much tho it definitely used to help with IP-based tracking. Imagine if we all pooled our connections through 1 Lemmy IP then the tracker will be very confused why this one IP is coming to many different sources. It doesn't work as much anymore because now 99% of tracking is done through javascript and it's a long lost battle already.

drmoose,

Crowdsourcing proprietary software - it ends the same every time. People should just do OpenStreetMaps instead

drmoose,

Cool rage but you dismissing search indexing is kinda hilarious. It’s not going away and it’s what makes the web. Would you rather have 3 big websites instead of indexed web?

drmoose,

Ok, maybe not "native" apps but it's pretty close when configured well!

drmoose,

That's a very good point. I'm not sure.
I know Hermit is using system's browser which is known to be leaky (that's what tiktok got in trouble for recently) and not as secure as Firefox. If you need security it's probably best to stick with Firefox imo.

YSK that “neoliberal” refers to a discrete set of economic policies including deregulation, privatization, and so-called “free trade” implemented by both center-right and center-left parties

Why YSK: I’ve noticed in recent years more people using “neoliberal” to mean “Democrat/Labor/Social Democrat politicians I don’t like”. This confusion arises from the different meanings “liberal” has in American politics and further muddies the waters....

drmoose,

It almost feels like political labels are there to deceive and confuse people or the political science is a meme that can't be trusted to name things. I swear, majority of political conflict is just people misunderstanding each other.

drmoose,

It's not a unique problem to US either. Every country I lived in seems to suffer from this in some form or shape. I'd even argue that people need some sort of conflict and the manipulators are taking advantage of this.

Distracting and confusing the peasants is such a natural tool in our current society too, where outrage, click bait and manufactured conflict aligns with attention-based business (i.e. ads). So everything just works naturally.

People need to be mindful and aware of this so thanks for writing about it!

drmoose,

I kinda like Ubisoft’s open world games don’t really get the “hard-core gamer” hate for them.

Assassins creed Odyssey was great, sure it was repetitive after some hours but that’s most of open world gaming. Same with Valhalla.

I’m cautiously optimistic.
