coys25,

Yeah that was definitely the worst of the fill… Not super fun, that one

coys25,

I find that they’re great for headings, titles, dates, etc - a little emphasis in my notes. With that said, my pilot metropolitan’s stub nib has also always been really scratchy too, and hard starts a lot. It’s always been one of my most disappointing pens.

One of my favorite stub nibs is a Jinhao 80 (Lamy 2000 clone, usually sub-$10). I swapped out the Jinhao nib for a Lamy 1.1 stub, and it writes like a dream!

coys25,

That is a pretty fascinating ink - seems to be a totally different color depending on nib and paper

coys25,

The Diamine guitar inks just generally look like nice autumn inks - nice!

coys25,

Nice - I had misread this as Diamine Earl Grey at first, and was very confused (“I’ve used this before and don’t remember any orange tones!”). But it does look beautiful!

Saddle Brown also looks very nice and versatile. Do you think that you need a medium nib to get the full spectrum of shading? I’ve sometimes been disappointed with browns that are too light with an F nib (bought a sample of Robert Oster Caffe Crema, but it really was too light for my daily use unless in an M, B, or stub).

coys25,

Wow, I really enjoyed that one!

Lots of great fill (spoilers)-------- First, the triple stacks in the NE and SW: CLEARASMUD // TORTELLINI // EARLYBIRDS and IMPRIMATUR // SPOONERISM // HERDEDCATS. I almost stood up and applauded! The downs are great too. TROMPE l’oeil, TORPOR, CLAWFOOT (with TUB for good measure), TEDLASSO, a great bit of light misdirection in the clue for STEEPENS, RANRIOT, DEALIO. Working in both a good Always (PADS) clue and MIRENA to get away from the usual old white guy bias? Cluing TASSEL in the burlesque sense? JET clued in relation to Ebony magazine? I’m here for all of it! Essentially a perfect Friday for my taste. 👏👏👏

coys25,

Definitely had that same mixup briefly.------ TROMPE was the one that clued me in, though. Definitely love a good trompe l’oeil… https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/bc614962-c2e8-4008-ba40-acf97622a33f.png

coys25,

Yeah, really agree - but I was surprised by the lack of rebuses or other tricks. Seemed much more like a Wednesday? But still fun!

coys25,

Do you have Quick Tap enabled? I have mine set up to show notifications (I miss the old ability to swipe down on the rear fingerprint reader), but yours might be set up to play/pause media.

coys25,

Yeah, I barely use quick tap. The swipe down was so intuitive, and with a bigger phone triple tapping requires you to rebalance the phone in your hand, etc.

Noodler's Triple Tail - Feed has a hole? (lemmy.world)

Hello, all! I’ve only recently jumped from dip pen calligraphy to the wonderful world of fountain pens, so I naturally found myself drawn to the Noodler’s flex nibs. I’ve been using my Creaper for months now and figured I’d finally earned myself the next big sexy- the Triple Tail. It arrived yesterday, and it writes like...

coys25,

Is it just the “blowhole” described here?

fountainpenchronicles.blog/…/breathe-just-breathe…

I don’t have one of these, unfortunately, so don’t have a comparison…

coys25,

coys25,

That’s wild! I thought it was fairly easy for a Friday, but still took me 19:20 (5 minutes faster than my average, but you must have been flying!)

coys25,

Mostly Leuchtturm, mainly because I really like their notebooks and the variety of them that are available. The paper is fine, but not like tomoe or anything like that. I mostly write at work during meetings etc., so the notebook is equally important to me. Open to other suggestions though!

coys25,

Yeah, I had never heard of cryptic crosswords until the post here a little while ago. I read a bit about them then, and that was the first thing that came to my mind with this puzzle!

Did anyone try to return to reddit and notice it just didn't do it for you anymore?

So I’ve switched to lemmy since the reddit meltdown started, experienced quite some withdrawal symptoms, occasionally turned back to reddit, more often logged out than logged in. Now I am merely using Lemmy occasionally and by far not as often as I used reddit before. No more doom scrolling....

coys25,

There is !reddead, but it’s pretty quiet. You could try posting there to get some of that content going. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle, though - the lack of content drives people away, leading to less content.

I will say that even in smaller communities I find that people are quite helpful here with questions, which is great.

It does seem like the post reddit boom of interaction and growth has waned, thought, and many of the communities that were starting to grow are now much quieter than they were a few weeks ago. I think that the lemmy.world downtime for so long really drove people away, which is a shame.

::: spoiler Spoiler
With you on NAIF - the N was the last thing that I filled in. I had wAIF instead and it just wasn’t clicking. (Not knowing ILENE Chaiken made the cross harder).

coys25,

1:17 for me. Found it pretty long and tricky for a mini!

coys25,

This sounds a lot like me! Though I’m closer to 8 or 9 inked at a time. Lots of notes in meetings; I have a few stub nibs inked up that I use for headers, then rotate (less systematically) through the other pens throughout the day. The changing colors for each meeting help to provide a good visual separation between meetings in my notes. Plus, it’s a nice little change of pace to “reset” between meetings by choosing a new pen.

coys25,

Reminds me of the Edith Macefield house, in Ballard (Seattle, WA).

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/Edith_Macefield%27s_house.jpg/1280px-Edith_Macefield%27s_house.jpg.

If you’re ever in Ballard, I highly recommend the excellent cocktail bar Hazelwood, which pays tribute to her with a namesake cocktail (the Edith Macefield).

coys25,

I’m US based so unfortunately there’s a mismatch in size. I’ll probably just drop some sheets in right before I print, definitely not going to pay to replace everyone else’s paper!

coys25,

Follow-up - I bought this and it works great! And yes - it is really thick. I think the reams of the usual printer paper at the office are going to develop an inferiority complex. Thanks again for the recommendations!

coys25,

I found the new FP user intro stuff over there very useful, and many of the guides (eg guide to Chinese fountain pens, etc) were great. If we could recreate some of that, would be awesome!

coys25,

I was thinking less “copy-paste” and more “set up the structure and come up with content ourselves over time?”

You ride around on a horse until a guy spits in your mouth, and then you slowly get sick and die.

coys25,

As a steam deck owner who has logged multiple play-throughs of RDR2 but never played RDR, I just want a PC port. Here’s hoping that the Switch version emulates well…

coys25,

And $50 is absurd… But if there were a PC version available on Steam, I’d probably pay it.

How am I going to play my favorite game of “will lens show up” now??

Wingsung 699 leaking (sh.itjust.works)

I bought a Wingsung 699 recently from AliExpress because I wanted to try out a vacuum filler. Ink leaks from around the nib whenever I cap it, leading to ink getting on the grip. When I write, blobs of ink sometimes burp out onto the page. Is this typical for this brand? I have another no name Wingsung (I think it’s actually a...

coys25,

I have two 699s and both are among my favorite Chinese pens. No leaking… You may have gotten a defective pen, unfortunately. Are you storing it with the blind cap screwed closed the whole way? If the blind cap is fully closed, the pen shouldn’t be leaking at all…

The burping can happen with vac fillers as your hand’s warmth causes air in the barrel to expand, pushing out the ink. Filling the pen up more fully may help - less air to expand. Are you writing with the blind cap open? This may help as there won’t be a sealed off barrel in which the air can expand.

coys25,

Hmm, that’s not been my experience. I have probably 15ish pens from Jinhao and Wing Sung, and only one had a (minor) QC problem. They write well, for the price, and you certainly don’t need to buy a handful to get a single good one (at least of the ones I’ve gotten). Sure, you should be prepared for the possibility that you might get a lemon, but I do think that that’s the exception, not the rule (at least these days).

coys25, (edited )

Hmm right - you would think that the shut off valve should keep any expanding air out of the nib. between that and the leaking, maybe you just have a defective pen with some issue in the sealing of the shut-off valve?

coys25,

I don’t mind it as much, but the wallpaper thing is poorly executed. I have a color photo as my lock screen and a plainish lightly textured background on my home screen. But material you picks colors from the lock screen photo, which I don’t see 99.9% of the time!

Anybody have any idea what this stuff inside the cap of my pen is? (lemmy.world)

I was riding with a Wing Sung 3009 today (a pretty nice, super cheap piston filler BTW) when I noticed this gunk on the inside of the cap. I’m pretty sure that I filled the pen up with Noodler’s Air Corps Blue/Black a few months ago and then let the pen sit. It wrote pretty much right away....

coys25,

Yeah - agreed. I don’t know the best solution. The other issue is whether the algorithm is being applied to all feeds and communities in the same way. The experience will be quite different if browsing all on a highly federated, high activity instance, compared to just looking at your subscriptions or browsing a lower-activity single community. Maybe the answer is just in general to decrease the steepness of the curve.

coys25, (edited )

Can someone who knows PL/pgSQL help parse this line:

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">return floor(10000*log(greatest(1,score+3)) / power(((EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM (timezone('utc',now()) - published))/3600) + 2), 1.8))::integer;
</span>

It seems to me that the issue might be that the function returns an integer. If the scaling factor is inadequately large, then floor() would return zero for tons of posts (any post where the equation inside floor() evaluates to less than one). All of those posts would have equivalent ranks. This could explain why we start seeing randomly sorted old posts after a certain score threshold. Maybe better not to round here or dramatically increase the scaling factor?

I’m not sure what the units of the post age would be in here, though. Probably hours based on the division by 3600? And is log() the natural log or base 10 by default?

In any case, something still must be going wrong. If I’m doing the math correctly, a post with a score of +25 should take approximately 203 hours (assuming log base 10) before it reaches a raw rank score of < 1 and gets floored to zero, joining all of the really old posts. So we should be seeing all posts from the last 8.5 days that had +25 scores before we see any of these really old posts… But that isn’t what’s happening.

coys25,

Yeah - though I had thought that still the one should be higher than the other, even if the numbers are small. In the actual equation, this would be multiplied by a scaling factor of 10000, though. (See the code discussion in the other comments). Though, in this case, the rank would still be very close to zero.

What I had missed is that, in the actual code, the equation is wrapped in floor() and returns an integer. So both are treated as rank = 0 and maybe randomly sorted.

The question is why are rank 0 posts showing up at all? In my other comment, if you do the math, I think that it should take quite a bit of time for any post with an appreciable score to decay to a rank of zero. Yet we see that these sorts of old posts are appearing relatively high in the hot feed.

One possible answer was suggested in another comment – it may have to do with how often the scores are recalculated for older posts, and if some have not decayed to zero by the time that the score recalculation stops, they might persist with a non zero score until the instance is restarted. I’m still not sure that that is the right answer, however, because I am guessing that instances like lemmy.world (which I am using) have been restarted recently with the various hacking attempts?
