I haven’t purchased an EV because they’re more expensive than an equivalent ICE vehicle. My current vehicle cost me $2,500 USD. My hope is that the used EV market continues to expand while economies of scale push prices down.

baascus,

Lol I will not purchase a Tesla out of principle. I get your point though. It feels like we have some ways to go before the used EV market is actually competitive, but I am hopeful for the future.

I get it - complaints about complaints, the ‘Inception’ of discourse, right? 😄 My aim was less ‘moan-fest’, more ‘awareness-raising’. But I see how it could have come off as one more tiresome rant. Point taken.

Downvoting? Sure, it’s a tool, but it feels like trying to empty an ocean with a bucket. As a community, can’t we aim higher? Maybe introduce more efficient levers? Let’s not just ‘downvote and move on’, let’s ‘upvote and move up’. Let’s brainstorm and pull this platform to greater heights.

Domain registration ≠ internet security. Root of trust is in cryptographic keys, not domains. DNS is not the security cornerstone you make it out to be. PKI says hi!

Bigotry is as it says, bigotry. You should make fun of people for being bigots.

baascus,
@baascus@lemmy.world avatar

I understand your point, but I believe that it’s human nature to have biases. Labeling it as unavoidable bigotry seems a bit pessimistic. We can strive to recognize and challenge our biases, encouraging empathy and understanding instead. It’s a continuous process, not a fixed state of being.

Ever wondered about the array_fill function? It can be baffling. Try filling an array with a negative index:

array_fill(-5, 4, ‘test’);

Many languages would throw an error, but PHP? It’s perfectly fine with this and you get an array starting at index -5. It’s like PHP is the Wild West of array indexing!

baascus,
@baascus@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely, many languages do allow negative indices. The intriguing part about PHP, though, is that its ‘arrays’ are actually ordered maps (or hash tables) under the hood. This structure allows for a broader range of keys, like our negative integers or even strings. It’s a unique design choice that sets PHP apart and allows for some really interesting usage patterns. Not your everyday array, right?

My bet’s on 3D printed meat making it to our plates before we’re DIY’ing insulin.

Regulation for medications like insulin is super tight (rightly so!). You can’t just whip up life-saving stuff in your garage without some heavy-duty checks and balances from the FDA and the like. Plus, the DIY part is insane, we’re talking high-level genetic engineering and biochemistry here, not homebrew beer.

Then there’s the demand part. The hype for environmentally-friendly, cruelty-free meat is real and growing every day. If they can get the taste and texture right, not to mention a decent price, lab-grown meat is gonna fly off the shelves.

Meanwhile, homebrew insulin’s got a smaller audience - mainly type 1 diabetics and some type 2s. And given that botched insulin can be lethal, a lot of folks might stick to the tried-and-true stuff from pharmaceutical companies.

So yeah, I’m thinking lab-grown burgers beat homebrew insulin to the punch. But hey, it’s 2023, who knows what’s around the corner? Fun to think about though!

There’s an argument to be made that by maintaining the Lightning connector, Apple can control and profit from the ecosystem of accessories that support their devices. This includes licensing fees from the Made for iPhone (MFi) program, which manufacturers must join to produce Lightning-compatible accessories. While user experience may be a consideration, Apple’s decision also likely has financial incentives.

Swatting is a huge problem and needs addressing, no argument there. But it's not about disbanding SWAT teams. These units exist for high-risk situations like hostage crises and active shooters - genuine threats.

The focus should be on improving how these incidents are handled and preventing false calls in the first place. We need better training for 911 operators to spot potential swatting calls and more targeted legislation to crack down on these dangerous pranks. Tech companies could also step up their game in addressing online harassment that often leads to swatting.

It's about creating a system that can respond to real threats while safeguarding innocent people from becoming victims of cruel pranks. Not an easy task, but something we should definitely aim for. Let's fight for change where it's needed most.

baascus,
@baascus@lemmy.world avatar

SWAT teams were designed to handle high-risk situations, not just hostage scenarios. They assist in various law enforcement operations, protect high-profile individuals, respond to civil disturbances, and serve high-risk warrants. These roles are crucial and can't be ignored.

The unfortunate cases where innocent people are harmed are heartbreaking, yet they don't represent the majority of SWAT deployments. Most SWAT teams manage high-risk situations without resorting to lethal force.

Rather than complete abolition, we need to focus on better training, stricter oversight, and stronger accountability. The militarization of police, including surplus military gear, is a concern and should be addressed separately.

As for 'swatting', it's a serious misuse of the system by individuals making false reports. This issue requires improved training for 911 operators and stricter punishments for those who make false reports.

While your concerns about SWAT teams are valid, I believe that reform, rather than total abolition, might be a more effective solution to ensure safety and justice.

"Does this include people protesting the police murdering them?"

SWAT teams are typically not the first responders for protests. Their role in civil disturbances generally involves extreme situations like riots or instances where there are direct, credible threats to life. Still, I agree it's vital to ensure that law enforcement respects people's right to protest.

"For what crimes?"

High-risk warrants often involve dangerous crimes or situations like armed suspects, drug trafficking, or violent crime suspects where there's a high probability of violence. But the system is imperfect, and mistakes can and do happen, sometimes with tragic consequences.

"Nothing in that link seemed to back up the claim those roles are crucial..."

IACP conducted two studies—one on police use of force and another on SWAT activities—to provide accurate data and insights on these aspects of law enforcement, aiming to inform the field, public, and media about the true nature of these practices.

"What “crimes” do you suppose cannot be dealt with by removing the social conditions which engender them..."

I totally agree we should strive to address social conditions that lead to crime. But we do not live in an ideal society; there will still be instances of violence, harm, or crisis where a specialized response is necessary, whether we call it "police" or not.

I can tell we have some starkly different views on governance, and that's okay. Not trying to spar here endlessly. Just remember, a world with zero law enforcement might not be as idyllic as it sounds. It's clear you envision a utopia and your perspective is valid. However, it's crucial not to let the perfect become the enemy of the good. Improving our systems should be our focus, even if they can't instantly reach perfection. Keep pushing for a better world, but let's also strive for achievable progress.

The public feud between Prigozhin and Russian military brass just got very real (www.vox.com)

The increasingly public feud between Russian military leaders and the head of a Russian paramilitary group escalated dramatically on Friday, when Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the paramilitary Wagner Group, accused Russian armed forces of attacking his soldiers and vowed retaliation. It was a shocking accusation, one with...
