aCosmicWave,

Although I think his heart is in the right place, he is essentially peddling bird NFTs.

aCosmicWave,

Why can’t I tell anyone? Would they kill me if I did?

Could you resist a true virtual reality and should you?

Lets assume we develop the capacity to create virtual worlds that are near indistinguishable from the real world. We hook you up into a machine and you now find yourself in what effectively is a paraller reality where you get to be the king of your own universe (if you so desire). Nothing is off limits - everything you’ve ever...

You are actually describing my “ideal” world as I outlined here!

My vision is heavily inspired by Terence McKenna. I imagine a world as it might have existed during prehistoric times. Lush forests teeming with exotic wildlife, clean air, and crystal clear water. No highways full of billboards, no parking lots, no shopping malls, and no cars. Just safe grounds and paths for humans embedded deep within all of this nature. At a birds-eye view, it may look as if humanity has completely abandoned technology and regressed back into its childhood. Yet if you were to look out through the eyes of one of these utopian people, you would see the most wonderful augmented reality display. Information, communication, entertainment, education, global economies… almost everything has been de-materialized. Humanity’s ceaseless pursuit of technology has been mostly divorced from our physical environment and mother earth is bustling with life again. The only technologies that remain in the real world are those that help all of us live happy and healthy lives (modern medicine, delicious food, solar power, etc) all the while the shared virtual reality in our eyes is limited only by our collective imaginations. We are finally living in accord with nature without having to forsake our innate desire for knowledge and progress.

aCosmicWave,

Education in the form of a cultivated social desire to live in harmony with our planet and not overpopulate it? I’m really not sure! I know I’m a romantic but a boy can dream. There has to be a more sustainable way for humans to live on earth though. Virtualization or dematerialization is the most realistic way for us to have our cake and eat it too.

aCosmicWave,

There’s no way to add an automated rule -> if c/asklemmy then comment should have 5 words minimum else don’t allow reply?

aCosmicWave,

Missed opportunity for you to say ‘what is “x” and y?’

aCosmicWave,

False. “2” is a number and not a word.

Vanilla Sky! It’s a mind bending movie about a lucky man’s life that many of us could only dream of. That life quickly turns into a waking nightmare when the man’s jealous lover takes her own life with him inside the moving car. His nightmare of a life then melds into an actual dream. That dream then slowly transforms into a nightmare. All the while the main character doesn’t know what is real and what isn’t.

This all leads to an absolutely spectacular cathartic release for the main character when he finally understands what’s happened to him in the last 10 minutes of the film.

Did I mention it was mind bending? One of my favorite movies by far.

aCosmicWave,

It’s very hard for me to recommend this movie because most people do not have the patience for the slow burn! A few of my friends fell asleep while watching it with me. The kind of person who will enjoy this movie is what Vanilla Sky itself refers to as a “pleasure delayer”. Someone who delays gratification until the absolute breaking point… which, ironically, is precisely what is necessary to fully experience the orgasmic conclusion to the film.

This movie just resonates with my soul, I don’t know how else to describe it!

It hits so many chords which have been interesting to me throughout my life: consciousness, lucid dreaming, sci-fi, romance and the lack of it (“you will never know the exquisite pain of the guy who goes home alone”), etc.

The soundtrack is also out of this world. Whenever a song plays during the movie the underlying visuals are in such perfect harmony that it starts to feel a bit like a music video.

aCosmicWave,

I am playing Jedi Survivor. Having had a blast with the original I was excited to hear people say that the second installment is similar but better in many ways. I don’t know what it is about it but I’m just not able to get into it. Maybe it’s the semi-open world feeling of some of the larger areas? I dunno it’s just not working for me, which is disappointing.

aCosmicWave,

My local public library offers video games. I am on the list to try Remnant 2 for PS5 and I’m very much looking forward to it.

I really enjoyed your write up!

Why are so many TV shows trying to be "meta" these days? I think it's lazy writing.

I just watched the first episode of the new Futurama season and the running gag was their attempt to make fun of the Hulu streaming network (Fulu)… in the year 3023. Not only that, but they also parody Black Mirror which itself parodies Netfix (Streamberry) in their latest season....

aCosmicWave,

I loved The OA! The second season was good too but just a bit on the meta side 😋

"Block The Rich" is like an ad-blocker, but for obscenely wealthy people with overinflated egos. (lemm.ee)

About 8 months ago I got pretty tired of seeing billionaire spam online. I could not bear to read about yet another rich guy who launched themselves (or their $200,000 car) into outer space 🚀 . I did not care about their expert opinion on the latest meme coin back then. I do not care about their expert opinion on the dangers...

aCosmicWave, (edited )

In the current form, it tries its best to blur the images and the parts of the article that directly reference the billionaire 😊. But I plan to add a whole suite of user options if there is sufficient interest!

aCosmicWave,

This is a great suggestion and is pretty similar to what some of the other commenters also requested. I am thinking to support multiple modes:

  • Blur The Rich (current prototype)
  • Block The Rich (your request)
  • Mock The Rich (replace the names of these billionaires with less flattering nicknames e.g. “Space Karen”, etc)
aCosmicWave,

I laughed out loud at this suggestion. Love it. I can imagine this could lead to some confusion if a user blocks a common name, like John Smith… but let me give it some more thought!

aCosmicWave, (edited )

I actually agree with you in theory! But in practice, the super rich seem to crave so much of our attention. We are all being inundated with their daily stream of consciousness and that’s what I’d love to help put a stop to.

For example, I truly believe that a certain manchild destroyed nearly 2 decades of brand recognition (twitter) just so he could take over the headlines yet again. I do not use his platform anymore, nor do I really care what he chooses to call it tomorrow.

People like that are not worth our brain cycles.

aCosmicWave,

I try to avoid corpo media as well! But still… if you sort this community by the Top posts in last 24 hours there are a handful of posts about Elon Musk and friends. At least those of us who browse the desktop version of Lemmy can ignore such posts.

aCosmicWave,

Amazing. Love it!

aCosmicWave,

I couldn’t agree more. Describing the billionaire stream of consciousness that we’re being inundated with as “a DDOS attack” is brilliant. That is exactly how I see it.

I want to take back some control over when I choose to read about these people.

aCosmicWave,

Thank you so much for trying it out! This truly is a very early prototype I quickly threw together. Given how much interest Lemmy has for the extension I will keep actively developing it. Maybe someday I can reach a state where the extension will be actually useful to you.

aCosmicWave,

If any one of these people actually goes to prison I promise to ship myself to you in a giant cake and let you know in person.

aCosmicWave,

My solution is to block them from my consciousness by default. Then when I feel like catching up I’ll temporarily disable the plugin (I just added this feature). This way I can have the best of both worlds!

aCosmicWave,

Thank you 😊

aCosmicWave,

Beautiful app! I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future iterations. Looking forward to you implementing the ability to collapse comments, vote on comments, etc.

aCosmicWave,

I love the placement of the upvote/downvote buttons on the posts in All / Subscribed / Local. Any possibility of having a similar design for individual comments as well?

It would be very convenient for my single hand usage of the app versus having to reach all the way to the left to upvote 😊.

aCosmicWave,

I’ll be praying for tap to collapse as well 😉

aCosmicWave,

Yep, exactly!

aCosmicWave, (edited )

I would buy Reddit and convert it into a Lemmy instance.

aCosmicWave, (edited )

They used end-to-end encryption where the sender stuffed the message into one end of a pigeon and the receiver would pull it out of the other end. The opposing forces didn’t have the time to check every single pigeon for intel so it did the trick until some genius decided to standardize putting an “Intel Inside” sticker on the fastest carrier pigeons.

aCosmicWave,

Code contains rules and instructions for computers to follow. The constitution contains rules and instructions for humans to follow. Each human uses a different code interpreter though 😊

aCosmicWave,

What a beautiful picture, thank you! You have a very nice way with words.

aCosmicWave,

“This sentence is a lie” sounds false but is actually true. I think?

aCosmicWave,

“What Orwell failed to predict is that we’d buy the cameras ourselves, and that our biggest fear would be that nobody was watching.”

aCosmicWave,

Yep! The spreadsheet is just an analogy I used to help unfamiliar people visualize what I was talking about.

The actual rules for Conway’s Game of Life are as follows:

  1. Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if by underpopulation.
  2. Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to the next generation.
  3. Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overpopulation.
  4. Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell, as if by reproduction
aCosmicWave,

Thank you! This is right up my alley and I will definitely check it out.
