The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we… kill those people.

It's just a ride.

Kbin is in Polish after the newest update (kbin.social)

Since the newest update, I see Kbin on a different language. I think it's Polish, or some similar language. The strange thing is that I don't remember a setting where one can change the display language. And the other strange thing is that this happens only on desktop. If I see Kbin via mobile, the page is in English....

Had the opposite happen as it happened to me on mobile and not on desktop.

To resolve, scroll down to the absolute bottom. There you'll find a dropdown menu for selecting language.

Currently the only way I know of favoriting a magazine is via the excellent Kbin Subscriptions Panel userscript. The pen icon can be used to edit subscriptions and star magazines, after which they will appear at the top in the subscriptions panel. Quite handy!

Not much was lost. Both Gizmodo and Kotaku content have already been indistinguishable from poorly generated AI content for ages now.

Zebrazilla,
@Zebrazilla@kbin.social avatar

You can start by boosting instead of using the arrow, which is actually currently only counting as favoriting and does nothing to counter any reduces on a post. It's an oversight that's being worked on and will eventually change, as I've understood it.

Definitely will be keeping my eye on this one.

Any VPNs comparable to IVPN and Mullvad by privacy, but also have port forwarding?

Since IVPN and Mullvad are both phasing out port forwarding, are there any alternatives? I am not looking for something like NordVPN which is a privacy nightmare. AirVPN is also not private enough considering I’ve seen reports online of ISPs sending out DMCA letters of gold to its users.

Zebrazilla,
@Zebrazilla@kbin.social avatar

OVPN still seems to support port forwarding, though it's worth pointing out they were recently acquired by Pango.

I highly recommend using nitter instances to look at content from Twitter. And with the excellent LibRedirect extension, the process becomes seamless and you can bounce between instances as you please.

And now nitter no longer works.

Multi-magazines on kbin? (kbin.social)

Kbin (and Lemmy) needs something to combine several magazines into one. Currently, there are many magazines spread over several instances. There's no way to just view or subscribe to them at once. You need to check them separately. If there were multi-magazines, new user could just search for someone's multi- and don't get...

I like how the userscript Kbin Subscriptions Panel groups magazines/communities with identical names. Makes me wish I could press something that opens up all these identically named ones into one "feed".

  • Shakedown: Hawaii - 80% off at 3,99€ - Think GTA for the 16-bit era.
  • 2Dark - 90% off at 2,49€ - Think Alone in the Dark but top-down and in retro/voxel style, from the original creator of Alone in the Dark.
  • UnderRail - 60% off at 5,67€ - Hidden or not, this one can't be recommended enough to fans of the original Fallout (1 & 2, isometric) games.
  • Space Haven - 60% off at 8,79€ - In-depth colony/spaceship building & management sim with cozy graphics.
  • Crystal Caves HD - 60% off at 2,63€ - A true testament to how to faithfully bring an old platformer into HD, while also innovating on the original. Also contains a lot of hidden gems.
  • Supraland Complete Edition - 54% off at 15,71€ - First-Person-Metroidvania in a literal sandbox, lots of freedom, lots of puzzles and exploring. Contains the DLC. Get this to gear up for the eventual release of the sequel Supraworld. The standalone Supraland Six Inches Under is also worth getting, but is "only" at 45% off, which is still great.

Block function not working quite right (kbin.social)

Hey, just wanted to mention this thing I noticed. So I blocked a user after a few rounds in a thread, but when they responded to me, I still got the notification and could still see the first line of their post from that screen. But the entire comment thread, including my own replies, was invisible from the article page until I...

I can verify this, had the same issue.

Stay away from DInput (DirectInput) only controllers as much as possible if you also have the intention to use it on Windows. Unfortunately, many of those cheaper Chinese telescopic or clip-on phone/tablet controllers only support DInput and not XInput, which will make it a right pain to get to work in most situations. It's not something that's clearly stated anywhere usually either, so keep that in mind.

However, if you do happen to find a Chinese controller, and there are some okay ones out there, that unfortunately only has DInput; there exists a fantastic tool to emulate XInput called XOutput that I would highly recommend!

Highly recommend both the script Kbin Federation Awareness and kbin social add home-instance name to username. Makes it a lot easier to tell where things are originating from at a glance!

Zebrazilla,
@Zebrazilla@kbin.social avatar

This is the way! Though I personally prefer Violentmonkey.

Zebrazilla,

I had slept on that particular script, thanks for pointing it out!

It's highly likely this is happening due to @ernest working on this aspect currrently. He said as much yesterday, so it's probably only temporary.

"Antiwoke" magazin on kbin.social posting bullshit like "how to end Wokeness" and "Time to reject the extrem trans lobby harming our society" How to report ? he is the moderator of that magazin. (calckey.social)

@ernest how do I report a Magazin on kbin.social ? There is a usere called "ps" who is posting to his own "antiwoke" Magazin on kbin.social. Please remove this and dont give them a chance to etablish them self on kbin.social. When I report his stuff it will go to him because he is the moderator of the magazin? Seems like a...

Best places to get human reviews/recommendations outside of reddit? (kbin.social)

Often times when duckduckgoing (is that the right term for that) advice for products, I use the !ddgr key to directly search reddit for advice. But in a post-blackout world, I need to do this a lot less. So I want to know what the best places are to get reviews and advice for products that are human and not top 10 listicals.

Zebrazilla,
@Zebrazilla@kbin.social avatar

If you still want to target reddit, without overtly giving traffic to reddit, I highly recommend one of the many LibReddit instances. And with something like LibRedirect you could still be doing !ddgr and click any reddit links, and always get redirected directly to an appropriate LibReddit instance.

It seems like a tricky thing to deal with technically due to how the Fediverse works, and I know far too little about ActivityPub to feel comfortable with coming with any ideas. I would however like to point out what I think we'll be seeing more of with this trajectory. Here's someone on kbin getting called out for downvoting and also explicitly named in a comment: https://kbin.social/m/wholesome/t/80838/To-the-one-guy-who-keeps-downvoting-m-wholesome-threads

For what it's worth, the game works perfectly out of the box on Steam Deck via Proton, didn't even had to force compatibility to use any specific Proton version. So at least it does work, and you can see others being successful on protondb too as linked by @PeachMan.

Neat, will give it a test drive for a while!

Might be good to post about this in m/kbinStyles. I went back looking for this after having installed it to write this, and didn't find it there where I would have expected it to be.

LibRedirect is a great way to access a wealth of sites like youtube, twitter, reddit, wikipedia, etc. via alternative privacy friendly frontends instead of directly.

While not an inherent guarantee of privacy, nothing really is, it makes the process of rotating randomly between these frontend instances for each visit a breeze, and easy to hop to a random new instance if the current one is down/not working as expected.

Student Monitoring Tools Should Not Flag LGBTQ+ Keywords (www.eff.org)

One of the more dangerous features of student monitoring tools like GoGuardian, Gaggle, and Bark is their “flagging” functionality. The tools can scan web pages, documents in students’ cloud drives, emails, video content, and more for keywords about topics like sex, drugs, and violence. They then...

We call on all student monitoring tools to remove LGBTQ+ terms from their blocking and flagging lists to ensure that young people’s privacy isn't violated

Removing certain keywords is hardly enough to ensure their privacy. This type of surveillance has no business being in a school to begin with. As a kid I found domain blocking to be bad, more of a nuisance really due to the ease of getting around it, but this stuff is downright dystopic.

The kbin enhancement script is also a great little tool to completely hide anything originating from NSFW domains that's listed in the script.
