WhyJiffie,

Besides a TOR node, you can also run an I2P “router” (which is a software package).

This is not an outproxy/exit node, so unless your country prohibits in law participating in routing network traffic (afaik not really a thing), this can’t get you into trouble.

I2P is a hidden network like Tor, but compared to that (while it is usable for browsing websites while hiding your IP from it) it’s a better choice for in-network services. Unlike with Tor it does not dislike bittorrent and such.
Everyone who runs a router can not only access I2P sites/services, but also participates in routing the traffic of other users, and with a stable and relatively fast internet connection you can help to improve connection speeds of the network for everyone.

WhyJiffie,

Yes, that may be an option… except that google can irreversibly lock you out of your account, or they can delete your files if their content scanning think it goes against some of their terms, but also simply there are people who don’t want to lose their privacy to google.

WhyJiffie,

Please read my comment again. My concerns are not about google drive shutting down. These have happened to real people.

WhyJiffie,

Yes, but actually no, if you want to access it remotely. DONT OPEN THE WEB PORTS TO THE INTERNET, rather use a vpn like wireguard to connect in to the home network.

Also, backups.

WhyJiffie,

I don’t use spotify, and I thought those are volume buttons, and did not understand where are the like and dislike buttons until I read the post. I think this is just a dumb design choice.

WhyJiffie,

WhatsApp is facebook, it’s not an improvement in the slightest

WhyJiffie,

For me the first loads quickly, the second either keeps loading it results in a server error.

I think this is a genuine error. Why don’t you contact your instance operator?

WhyJiffie,

I think you may have misunderstood it, it was not clear to me either until I tried it.
The lemmy.ml modlog works fine, the problems are with viewing it through lemm.ee

WhyJiffie,

If I was already playing CS1 with 30 fps in low, I guess this would be 10-15 fps if it even starts up, right?

WhyJiffie,

The point is not that, but that modern games are super wasteful with computing resources.

WhyJiffie,

I don’t want to pay for the hardware either. I have an old 750 Ti, and you would be surprised how many (not new) games are running perfectly fine on it. Amount them those like the last deus ex games. I don’t remember the framerate I had, but neither do I remember it as an unplayable laggy mess.

When I read that CS2 barely manages to run on a 2060 or some other powerhouse (in my eyes at least, but honestly for some reason I have the impression that 20xx is not much of a leap from let’s say a 1080 Ti) I can’t think anything else but that the game is a totally wasteful garbage technically.

WhyJiffie,

Ok, and what how do you shorten it? No way I’m typing it out all the time it comes up. Comms seem to be appropriate

WhyJiffie,

I hope you all live up to the title and keep everything stored and seeding :)

Google Chrome to soon get a new ‘IP protection’ feature: Here’s what it does (indianexpress.com)

Google will soon start testing a new ‘IP protection’ feature for Chrome users, offering them greater control over their privacy. The tech giant the upcoming feature prevents websites from tracking users by hiding their IP address using proxy servers owned by Google....

WhyJiffie,

Yes, this is straight out deception, and another avenue of making other targeting based ad networks less useful.

WhyJiffie,

Try the singlefile firefox addon. It will save the page to a single HTML file that you can open in other devices too. Usually you’ll be able to scroll back quite a few messages in the saved page. I think that depends on how much you scroll back to load them

WhyJiffie,

May I ask what was the problem? A few weeks ago I tried to save messages this way, and (to my surprise) it worked fine.

WhyJiffie,

I see, it downloads too much.

You could try the "save selection function.
Or with the “annotate and save page” function, if in the annotation editor tab you click “enable/disable removing of internal elements”, I think you could try deleting any messages that’s not needed.

WhyJiffie,

I think these are long, stitched screenshots made on a phone

WhyJiffie,

You can use it via web perfectly fine

Except when they demand your phone number for access. Pathetic service.

WhyJiffie,

If it’s just a little, like 3px corner radius, it can look good, I like that.

But every graphics designer has to make it 10+ for some reason, and it’s fucking ugly

WhyJiffie,

Why though? And is it just “material” 2 and 3, or the original too?

WhyJiffie,

Fast scrolling when pageup/pagedown is not available or not enough

WhyJiffie,

When pageup/down is not available you usually don’t have a mouse either. Think of a laptop with a minimalist keyboard or a phone.

WhyJiffie,

Accidental delete.

Like forcing everyone over to a microsoft account, which will sneakily force you to hand over your phone number for verification for “suspicious activity” ~1 week after registration, no matter what you do or don’t do.

There was also something about channeling all server chat messages to a central filtering team/system, and irreversibly banning anyone who said something that’s not “child safe”, even if it was just on a private server where the measure was not turned off

WhyJiffie,

I guess the Microsoft account thing I don’t really get, it wasn’t difficult to move it over in my experience but I already had several Microsoft accounts for Windows and Xbox stuff

For new MS accounts they now require a phone number. Not at registration, but in a week after it.

WhyJiffie,

Are the advertising libraries completely removed from the paid version, or is it just about not placing ads on the UI?

WhyJiffie,

I haven’t yet looked into the lemmy client, but they don’t necessarily have to call any function in that library for it to be active.

On one hand, there are the class variables in Java. When a class variable (a static one) has a value assigned at the place where the variable is declared, and the assignment is the result of a function call, afaik that will run when the class is loaded, which is basically every time the app is run. Same with static blocks.

On the other hand, on Android an app can have components that are automatically run in certain conditions, and which can be added by any programming library you have added to your project.
One such type of component is the BroadcastReceiver. These are mostly run on certain events broadcasted inside the app or through the whole system, but now I don’t find whether any of those that Boost reddit uses are started by systemwide broadcasts. The other is the ContentProvider. These are started every time the app’s process starts, but otherwise unconditionally. It’s common for ad and tracking code to misuse this kind of components for being active as much as possible. Looking at the Boost reddit app, along others it has the following:

  • com.applovin.sdk.AppLovinInitProvider
  • com.google.android.gms.ads.MobileAdsInitProvider
  • com.google.firebase.provider.FirebaseInitProvider (I think if you disable this one, the app won’t even work anymore, like with most other apps. Not like if disabling components would worth much, as this is not a privacy feature but a technical one, and the apps themselves can manage this)
WhyJiffie,

And the developers of those ad libraries that the dev uses, too. Have a look at my other comment: sh.itjust.works/comment/3783324

WhyJiffie,

amputatorbot.com sums it up. It was (is?) a bot for reddit

WhyJiffie,

It’s interesting to me that articles mention godot before unreal. I mean this is not the first time I see it

WhyJiffie,

Thunderbird does this too. I think it’s enabled by default

WhyJiffie,

From me it would need more. Chrome has more (mostly privacy related) disadvantages compared to Firefox than that

WhyJiffie,

Libretube is also a fine option. Available on F-droid

WhyJiffie,

That does not always work like that. Sometimes you are obliged to use a website that is resistant to user privacy

WhyJiffie,

Not directly, but indirectly it can. By simply just blocking browsers that allow meaningful ad blocking. And not just ad blocking, but it can be applied to any kinds of user-side modifications.

WhyJiffie,

The firefox process on my machine has been running since 07.23, that is, for almost 2 months now. I just asked it and it feels ok

WhyJiffie,

And where is the repetition?
Maybe you’re just drunk and see two or everything.

WhyJiffie,

Who’s going to pay the new fees imposed by unity?

WhyJiffie,

That’s not unpopular at all. Afaik most people like ugly rounded corners over square corners. But I would say that’s fine if only Apple devices would be like that.

Are you able to read in your dreams?

I ask because it’s considered common knowledge that you can’t but I regularly have dreams where I continue books I’m reading irl (they usually devolve into naritive nonsense over time and then sometimes to blank pages, but the actual text is definitely deciferable), text messages, computer screens, and road signs, in both...

WhyJiffie,

Or for any kinds of brain chips, for that matter

WhyJiffie, (edited )

I mostly use bluetooth, but the jack of my phone is not sitting there unused. I have wired headphones too, and I frequently use my phone as a microphone (because it is one) by connecting it to my computer by a jack cable.

Also, the next headphone of mine will probably be wired. Always keeping it charged is not really a problem, but the privacy aspect of Bluetooth has started to disturb me.
With a wired connection, you exactly know and control who connects to your devices, and at the same time you don’t announce to the world that you are here.

Also, as I understand you can’t use USB-C for audio and charging or data transfer at the same time, or even all 3 at the same time. Is that right?
That is critical functionality for me. Audio is not just entertainment, it could be an online meeting or other things too, and at one point I’ll have to change my phone, or transfer files from it. However I don’t have a USB-C phone so I can’t test it, so I would appreciate if someone could confirm if this is actually the case.

WhyJiffie,

Being able to change volume and songs without picking up my phone from pocket is also very convenient.

Wired headsets can do that too

WhyJiffie,

Libredirect if you are interested in private frontends to youtube, twitter and such

Violentmonkey if you want to automate websites

Singlefile

Firefox multi-account containers (yes this is an addon), and temporary containers

WhyJiffie,

Are we really making a tantrum about a default setting? One that is (or rather would be) a sensible choice? Or am I missing the bigger picture?

If the devs wanted to put some intrusive default settings (like a central image-upload checker) then I would understand, but this is a fucking boolean for whether to allow infinite scrolling on the bundled frontend.
This is what server admins are for: to config their servers in a way they see fit for their communities.

And about the content URLs. Later on they agreed on accepting it if someone implemented it well, even if they said they won’t work on it for now because there are more important things to get done (and let’s be honest, that’s true).

WhyJiffie,

Try reloading it once or twice. I usually have to do that to have more than just a few comments show up

WhyJiffie,

Ok, but that’s not a greeting. That’s a question

WhyJiffie,

Ok, they will have cables, but “Android is about options”, yet it’s hard to find a phone that does not have a rounded screen, a notch, or a screen embedded camera.
Honestly I’m using a 7 year old phone and I’ve almost given up on finding a new one with sensible hardware. In the last years android really became much closer to iphones, and not to their advantage in my eyes.
