I already wasn’t using Unity for my own projects (I’ve been working on a game with Godot for years) but I play a lot of Unity-based games, and at least this means that those won’t have to be delisted.
I can try to answer any questions, but it doesn’t seem like the 8bitdo Ultimate software is availible for download yet. Im not big into mechanical keyboards, this is actually my first, so I don’t have much direct comparison experience to other keyboards....
If they were going to put an A and B button on the keyboard then they should’ve put A on Ctrl and B on Alt. That way it would have the correct layout for Commander Keen, Duke Nukum and a million other DOS platformers.
They could have fitted the whole ring / tape / mouse assembly into a small paper bag Aragorn could have kept it in his jacket and fed it little bits of lembas on the way how lovely x
During the trial it was revealed that McDonald’s knew that heating their coffee to this temperature would be dangerous, but they did it anyways because it would save them money. When you serve coffee that is too hot to drink, it will take much longer for a person to drink their coffee, which means that McDonald’s will not...
I think where people get heartburn on these things is when you introduce such a whiplash of a change with such short notice. I think even if Unity changed the pricing to 2 cents an install starting 2024, then upped it to 5 cents in 2025 and kept it at an incremental increase, it would have been a better “slow boil.” By going outright with the 20 cents per install for the entry level, the market reacted just as radically as the proposed changes.
It’s not short notice, it’s negative notice. They’re potentially charging people who haven’t used Unity in years, and had agreed to a completely different set of terms when they did use it. If they’d just made their charges apply to new versions of the engine going forward then people might still have stopped using Unity since it no longer made sense from a business perspective, but there wouldn’t have been the outrage over it that we see now.
The problem is that Unity is trying to change their agreement with their past customers unilaterally to get more money. In that situation, one penny is too much.
You couldn’t do that already? I haven’t upgraded to 4.X yet, but that feature’s been in the 3.X branch for ages (for individual tiles, at least. I don’t think there’s any equivalent of “tile patterns” in 3.X.) Did they take it out?
The “utopian future” for Star Trek has always been pretty vague. They almost never showed civilian life in the Federation, so we didn’t see much of it. Mostly it served as an excuse for a bunch of people in a heavily-armed ship to travel around and preach their own superiority to the primitives they came across while adhering strictly to a military chain of command that’s held up as the highest ideal.
People wonder why there are so many fascists in the Star Trek fandom. I always thought it was pretty obvious.
I’m a reverse Lawful Neutral; laptop on the left, monitor on the right.
Before that I had a 16:9 monitor on the left and a 4:3 monitor on the right. That doesn’t seem to be in the chart anywhere.
Seriously, someone needs to start making high-quality 4:3 monitors again. Sure, they’re not great for movies and modern video games, but they’re great for reading.
Not enough. Even this sets precedent that #Unity or any other middleware provider can retroactively shake down its past customers for more money. One penny would be too much.
Any change to an agreement like this needs to be contingent on the customer doing something like updating to a new version of the software or renewing their subscription, and the law needs to make this explicit (if it isn’t already; IANAL but I’m not a lawyer.)
If the VW Golf had a complete monopoly on the car market to the point where you had to spend years jumping through hoops just to be able to drive your Focus on the roads, despite the Golf being an extremely shitty car when taken on its own merits, you’d probably be pretty resentful to the people who enable that monopoly, too.
No, it sounds like people who are constantly being told that Linux is “too hard to use” compared to Windows speaking up when they see a blatant example of that not being true.
Unity benefits massively from the fact that it’s the default choice for indie game development. Even if they keep the majority of their devs, if they drive enough away to lose that default status then they’re fucked.
If the heat dies down then devs will have time to finish their current projects and switch to new engines for the next ones. Even a temporary walk-back would be enough to prevent disaster for a lot of studios.
The one apple seller in a town that sells all kinds of baked goods jacks up prices of apples to $100 each.
No, it’s more like one apple seller who arbitrarily decides that the people who already bought apples from them at a lower price now need to pay extra.
I’ve been working on an indie game project for several years now and invested thousands of dollars into it. Fortunately, I had the foresight to use Godot for it, but if I’d used Unity instead I’d be completely screwed right now. Hell, I’m still using the 3.X branch of Godot because I figured that migrating everything to version 4 would be more trouble than it’s worth. Going to a completely new engine at this stage in development would be completely out of the question.
No, it’s a commercial release. I’d been doing everything with placeholder art throughout most of development but I’ve recently commissioned some artists for some professional assets, and I think I’ll have enough to put together some screenshots and a demo video and get a page on Steam, etc. set up within the next few weeks.
It’s a Metroidvania with influences from cinematic platformers (Another World, Flashback) and immersive sims (System Shock, Deus Ex.)
I’m using Godot 3 for my current project because even the relatively minor changes I’d have to make to port it to Godot 4 would be unfeasible. If I had to change engines entirely I’d have to just abandon the project.
