Vent,

Have they considered doubling the number of prisons and providing police with tanks?

Vent,

America’s response to the opioid epidemic is a far cry from treatment and compassion. They’re literally charging friends (addicts) of overdose victims with murder just for being associated by redefining “drug dealer” to be super broad and reclasifying ODs as poisonings.

Amazing read: He Tried to Save a Friend. They Charged Him With Murder.

Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas signed a law this month to reclassify fentanyl overdose deaths as “poisonings,” and Arkansas passed a “death by delivery” bill in April to charge some overdoses as murders in an effort to deter anyone from selling or even sharing fentanyl. Prosecutors in Alaska, California, Florida and at least a dozen other states were beginning to pursue new murder cases against any defendant who fit under the wide-ranging definition of a fentanyl dealer: a 17-year-old in Tennessee who, after graduation, shared fentanyl in the school parking lot with two of her friends, both of whom died; a husband in Indiana who bought fentanyl for his disabled wife, who overdosed while trying to numb her chronic pain from multiple sclerosis; a real estate agent in Florida who threw a party and called 911 when one of her guests overdosed; a high school senior in Missouri who gave one pill to a 16-year-old girl he met at church and warned her to “only do a quarter and then do the other quarter if you don’t feel it.”**

Vent,

I set up automated texts a while ago and IIRC they must comply with the keywords STOP and HELP, otherwise they can get in big trouble with the carriers.

Vent,

Not sure what scenarios are exceptions to that. Like, you wouldn’t want to get locked out of an account just because you said STOP to your 2fa codes.

Vent,

But there’s a little hitch – the modder didn’t share any videos comparing the regular game physics to the modded ones. So, we’re in the dark about whether this mod is really worth your time or not. We also can’t say for sure if it’s a big improvement over the D.R.O (DRAMATIC RAGDOLL OVERHAUL Mod), which is also made by hunter14322.

Isn’t that your job then, as a journalist? Why even bother writing an article at all if it comes with an asterisk that the mod may be a complete waste of time?

Vent,

America doesn’t need those tax dollars to fund better healthcare. Medicare for all would cost less than the current system does.

Vent,

Leaving out the TV makes it less precise and more clickbaity because then it sounds like Android phones are affected.

Vent,

It’s only slightly misleading and Arstechnica writes really good articles. It’s pretty much the only news site I regularly browse.

Vent,

I played it on PC at launch and thoroughly enjoyed it. They’ve completely redone the skill tree system and reworked a ton of the weapons/clothing/cyber gear. It’s different now, but the story and core gameplay are still very much the same. I’m replaying it for the DLC and having a great time.

Vent,

Netflix didn’t start with ads, and the ads don’t affect pre-existing subscription tiers.

Vent,

Did some more research and Netflix did remove their “Basic” plan when they added the cheaper ad-supported tier. They also raised the prices of their other plans, but those increases were consistent historically, so I’m not convinced the addition of an ad-supported tier caused them. Graph of Netflix prices from 2011-2023

Vent,

Once upon a time, Google offered unlimited drive storage as part of some GSuite tiers. They stopped offering it a while ago and have kicked most/all legacy users off of it in the past few months. It was glorious while it lasted 😢

Vent,

People aren’t allowed to post their own stuff now? That’s been the norm since forever.

Vent,

Before the internet even existed. You are aware that forums have existed before anyone made an account on Lemmy, right?

Vent,

If nobody was allowed to post their own stuff, then things like official comic accounts wouldn’t exist. Or official accounts in general.

Vent,

Who do you ask permission from and how? Message the mods? Post a poll?

Vent,

For sharing it with someone specific? Just about anywhere you want. Most commonly Google Drive. I like Send as an alternative for file sharing. catbox.moe is popular on lemmy.

Vent,

How can you tell it’s a filter vs actual film?

Vent,

Thankfully, Walmart stopped weighing items entirely. Not sure how it affects theft, but it sure makes the checkout process smoother. Don’t need to wait after scanning each item. Don’t need take reusable bags out of your cart. And they replaced almost all of their checkout lanes with self checkouts.

Too bad Walmart is evil, because their checkout is 👌 and Sam’s scan-and-go is just 💦. Every other store is just bad UX.

Vent,

Doesn’t every store have cameras everywhere recording everything?

Vent,

Roth is a true homie, you take that back! His tax deductibleness is way better in the long run in most circumstances.

Vent,

“If it can be done and it is done, for example, for crimes such as child pornography, for intellectual property, which is stealing, they should have to do it too.” - LaLiga chief Javier Tebas

Ah yes, two equivalent crimes: CSAM and… um… watching sports without paying

Vent,

This is a ridiculous definition of “real-time”. To accomplish this you’d need to subvert the kernal’s scheduler, otherwise you’ll always end up with “unbounded” response times since a single program can’t control what else is running or which clock cycles are allocated to it. What you end up with is an OS that only runs one process per thread.

I’m tempted to abandon using Windows, macOS and Linux as the main platforms with which I interact.

Yeah, okay buddy. And I’m tempted to stop eating and sleeping because I’d like the extra free time.

Vent, (edited )

The article is not talking about async processing. It’s talking about the process scheduler and thread blocking. It even has a section titled “Real-time Scheduling” that talks specifically about the process scheduler.

It’s simply not possible to fit the author’s definition of real-time without using something like an RTOS, and the author seems to understand that. The main feature of an RTOS is a different scheduler implementation that can guarantee cpu time to events. The catch is that an RTOS isn’t going to handle general purpose usecases like a personal computer very well since it requires purpose-built programs and won’t be great at juggling a lot of different processes at the same time.

Vent,

What do we replace credit scores with? How should banks determine who can be trusted with what loan?

Vent,

Considering that Evil Dead is about demonic possession in the middle of the woods, I think it falls firmly outside of the “not scary at all” category. Though, I did find it hilarious that they have a demon spectator heckling them for like over half of the movie.

Vent,

I mean, being on-call is something that implicitly comes with compensation to match. I’m sure there are outliers, but it is literally extra work. It wouldn’t make sense any other way.

Vent,

squoosh.app

Top tier local image compression. Highly configurable. No installation required.

Vent,

That’s the classic “If I owe you $5 it’s my problem. If I owe you $5B it’s your problem.”

Roku lays off 300 workers and removes streaming content to save money (www.engadget.com)

Roku looks to be seriously tightening its pursestrings. The company’s laying off a full ten percent of its workforce, over 300 employees, in addition to a conducting a number of other cost-cutting measures, as reported by Variety. These job cuts are just the beginning, as Roku’s also removing streaming content, consolidating...

Vent,

Bluray rips can be 80mbps+ but I’ve never had trouble streaming them on any device including roku. Important to remember that the bitrate is an average so some scenes will be well above the advertised bitrate.

Vent, (edited )

Yeah, companies like Google are too big and have too much influence over society/politics, but calling them a search monopoly seems like a stretch. Of all the evil things companies like Google do, we’re going after them for paying other companies to make them their default search engine? It takes all of 30 seconds to change the default, though I admit most people won’t, mostly because they honestly have no reason to.

Google funds Mozilla by paying to be Firefox’s default search engine (and probably other royalties for search-related stuff?). In 2021, payments from Google made up 83% of Mozilla’s revenue.

Vent,

You still get this effect if you are active on specific communities, especially smaller ones.

Vent,

Movies Anywhere is your friend here. Buy a movie from one store, watch it from any other store. Not sure how it works when one store shuts down, hopefully you keep it in all the other stores.

Vent,

It works with movies you already own, so there’s no need to buy more just to test it out! It’s still not as convenient as some other… less legal… options, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Vent,

Paying off principal is essentially shifting money from one pocket to another so it doesn’t really make sense to get a writeoff for that.

Vent,

When you pay principal, you are gaining that much value back as equity. It makes more sense if you think of a loan for something physical like a mortgage. If you pay $100 of principal on your mortgage, that money turns into equity that you own in your home so that when you sell you get that much more (in a simplified way).

You aren’t losing the $100 you pay in principal, it’s just transferring into an asset rather than liquid cash. With a student loan, that asset is your degree/education. It’s a little different than a mortgage because the bank can’t repossess your degree, but the underlying logic is the same.

You could also think of it like paying for your degree on a payment plan. You wouldn’t expect to get a tax writeoff on your couch just because IKEA let you pay in monthly installments.

Vent,

To add on to this, a common carbon “offset” is to pay land owners to not cut down trees that they often weren’t planning on cutting down anyway. John Oliver has a segment on Carbon Offsets.

Vent,

At what point do we ingest enough microplastics to become plastic and stop aging/decomposing? Asking for a friend.

Vent,

By $5/yr for a streaming service with nothing of note on it

Vent,

Signal takes steps to reduce the amount of metadata visible, like sealed sender which makes it so that Signal doesn’t know who sent a message. Even your payment information for donations is separated from your identity so that they know you are a donor, but not how you donated.

It desn’t matter if Signal were hosted on Putin’s personal servers. Its security is in its protocol, it’s not trust based.
