I once heard that in the middle of 20th century, public transportation in the USA was widely privatized and bought by automotive manufacturers, and then wilfully left to rot, so that people would buy more cars....
Well, if you can’t find anything to confirm your bias, then it is probably wrong. Public Transit often loses money and is owned and operated by government.
To put this in perspective, they lost an average of $2B per month in value. According to HUD, there were about 582,000 homeless people in the US last year. $2B per month is enough to house all of them nearly 4 times over if you assume $1k per month in housing expenses.
What a monumental waste of resources that could have made a difference. Musk just sucks
Musk raised $44B of real money to buy Twitter and bring it into private ownership. I’m saying had he just left well enough alone, he could have used that money for other purposes
Your point on adding more supply to the real estate market to prop up prices is the opposite of Econ 101 - more supply, all things equal, will reduce prices. Mental health is a much larger barrier to receiving help for the homeless.
I used to volunteer weekly with homeless and housing insecure people in Philadelphia and untreated mental health or substance abuse was an issue for many. There are also barriers to receiving government aid that would assist them because many programs require an address or the process is unnecessarily complicated.
Housing is just one step. They would also require a great deal of counseling, job training, and medical attention to reintegration into society. Anyway, my point was simply to illustrate what a magnificent waste of resources it was to buy Twitter.
I don’t think anyone outside of here says that about cyclists. And certainly no one thinks an imbecile in a big truck is an elitist. If anything they probably feel sorry for them that they think Olive Garden is a fancy Italian restaurant

Clearly you skipped over the Coleman Young Era of leadership in Detroit. Plagued by crime and rampant corruption, White flight started after a series of race riots in 1967, but continued through the 70s and 80s. Young succeeded in integrating the police department and reducing brutality complaints, but the murder rate never dipped below 50 per 100k residents and the city lost about half a million residents during his ~20 years of leadership.
Then of course you had later convicted crooks like Kwambe Kilpatrick run the city into bankruptcy. Auto companies, mainly GM and Chrysler, left, but that was only part of the problem. Years of fiscal mismanagement and crime deteriorated the city.
Their demands are bullshit and they have yet to submit a counter offer. They are negotiating in bad faith and all they will succeed in doing is making American Automotive less competitive and more expensive.
They are asking for a 40% raise over 4 years, PLUS a 32 hour work week, and pensions, etc. Today the top hourly wage is $32 per hour, they are suggesting increasing that to $58.50 per hour with these actions (10%^4 + 25%). That would basically double the cost of manufacturing and it would reduce productivity by 20%. Unlike knowledge workers, the 4 day work week in this instance just means they produce less or they have to hire more to produce the same output.
Either way, that would put the big 3 at a huge disadvantage vs the Asian imports and most notably, Tesla.
A decision to fire an elementary school teacher from Georgia has been upheld, after she read a children’s book on gender identity to her fifth-grade class earlier this year....
Well the headline reads, “Elderly driver plows into Los Angeles car dealership dragging customer 20 feet to her death.” And then the line immediately beneath it says, “Los Angeles fire officials say the woman wasn’t injured.”
So while I can’t comment on factual integrity of the article, I can say for certain that is shitty fucking writing. Why the author thought we would give the slightest fuck about the driver who had a senior moment and killed someone is beyond me. The wording is terrible because it appears to immediately contradict the headline because “her” is used to describe two different subjects without clarification.
Fox News is also very well documented to spread lies and divisive politics, so cut the shit. The bottom line is they are just bad at their jobs and their intent is often maligned.
