I fully admit I’m not the most talented linux person, but you say that you created an smb share on Unraid, but you mounted it as if it were an NFS share. Is that just a typo, or could that be the root of your problem? I could imagine Synology Drive not letting you interact with files in the mounted folder if the permissions and ownership weren’t set up right.

I am in precisely the same situation (except I don’t use Backblaze. I store my data offsite in a safe deposit box). My wife is also non-technical. Here’s what I’m planning to make the “bus moment” less impactful:

1. I’ve got a couple friends who are technical enough that she can call them for assistance. I’m running a VPN server that at least one of them knows how to access so they can walk her through what she needs.
2. I plan on storing the RSA key for the password manager, along with digital documents explaining how to keep certain things running on a thumb drive that I’ll drop in the safe deposit box mentioned earlier.
3. I need to get my wife to log in to the NAS a few times and perform some basic maintenance to build a little muscle memory.

I’ve been trying to decide how to handle the critical documents backup. They’re backed up on the NAS, but that’s a complicated piece of equipment. I have them organized into a folder structure so that I can find them easily. I’m thinking of just dropping the whole folder structure onto the thumb drive, just in case. I can’t think of a better solution, especially since my wife is going to be busy and distraught after I’m dead, so she won’t be able to handle a super complicated retrieval process.

It’s scaring me how similar your situation is to mine! I also just finished scanning in a bunch of photos that my grandmother took. I chose to host the photos in the Photos app, and considered for a long time whether I would let that sync up to iCloud. Sure, the photos would exist on Apple’s cloud. But if I die, they can only be accessed from my Apple devices. If someone can’t get into them for any reason, they’re as good as gone, because Apple – as good a company as it is when it comes to customer service – can’t be counted on to let anyone else into my account to retrieve data.

So I stored them in Photos, and will store copies of them on my NAS, in hopes that having them in multiple locations will increase the chances that someone else can access them. Same thing goes with my data – I ignore iCloud, but I store that data on my Macbook Pro, inside of its periodic backup, on my NAS, on the backup of the NAS, and potentially in the future, on a thumb drive. More locations means more chances of being able to get at the files in the event of a catastrophe.

It probably was. The activity sharing part of the Fitness app sometimes won’t work if some users have a different version of iOS than you do. It will now warn you about this when sharing your data for the first time.

I take on a homelab or Apple ecosystem project every weekend to keep my skills sharp. What I’ve noticed after several years of doing this is that I know a whole lot more about what the homelab services can do than I do about the iPhone in my pocket. Today, for example, I forced myself to go through the Health app and enter things like medications. Pretty soon my devices were reminding me to take my medication and asking me to log what I took. Despite all the reading I do about Apple products, I didn’t realize that the app would remind me to take the medication. That’s really useful!

Another example is when I learned how to make the iPhone make white noise. Who knew that the accessibility features included that? Or that you can choose ocean waves or rain instead of the white noise? And here’s something I learned entirely by accident when trying to pay for something at the store — pressing the sleep button three times toggles the white noise feature. I don’t think that’s written down anywhere.

This is why I need some of those in-depth tutorials. They always expose you to a dozen tangentially related capabilities while you’re learning about the subject of the moment.

Why not install proxmox on the bare metal of the NUC, then add VMs and containers inside of Proxmox for your reverse proxy, blocky, and other services? Maybe this is what you are doing and I just don’t understand.

I have Proxmox installed on bare metal in my primary home lab server. I also run a Synology NAS on the side. I’m not running Synology Drive for any clients, but I’ve set it up for others before, and it works great in this configuration.

This is definitely a cultural prudishness emerging. But that’s only part of it. There has also been a shift away from artistic filmmaking and toward high-grossing tentpole movies. Because nudity is a taboo in our society, you need an artistic purpose to the nudity (or sex scene) in the film or it won’t serve any purpose to the film, and people will notice that it’s out of place. If most of the movies you have are cookie-cutter concept movies with little to no artistic expression, you just can’t make anything taboo work in them.

Obviously everyone has different taste in movies, but some films that made on-screen sex work really well are Basic Instinct, Blue Velvet, and Eyes Wide Shut. It also adds a lot to really campy movies. Nightmare on Elm Street comes to mind. Species became a cult classic because of its use of nudity and sex. For just plain nudity, It Follows used it well in the briefest of glimpses of the antagonist. It also added a lot to Ex Machina.

Those are just the movies off the top of my head that were made more impactful by sex and nudity.

Oh! Airplane also has a big laugh thanks to a scene of gratuitous nudity. Let’s not forget the comedies!

It’s about time someone pointed this out. Look at all the things phones got rid of in their UI:

• Clustering of icons on a desktop
• Application windowing
• Preferences located inside an application

(It also gives up a lot of context-based right-clicking, but I personally consider the right-click a bad UI design choice.)

Some things, like folders, are only barely implemented, with a host of features that we’ve had for decades removed. Ever tried to sort a phone group by creation date?

I’m writing this on an iPad, which I would love to use as my daily driver, but because it runs iPad OS, there are so many productivity and organizational features missing relative to Mac OS that I do most important things on the laptop.

“Locked” is a pretty strong word. I’m running a home lab with Home Assistant, and I’m running Macs, PCs, Android devices, and lots of Linux virtual machines. The reason I use an Apple product instead of an Android product is that Apple products are a lot more polished.
