Autism and Sensory Issues:

Our microwave oven is a sensory nightmare for me. I always try to stop it before it reaches zero and begins beeping. I get extremely anxious over this.

What do you avoid?

I've opened a cheap one up that didn't have a muting option. Found the beeper component and clipped the leads.

Rental house, but no one notices when the beep is absent.

Obviously gotta unplug and know which things would throw you through a wall if touched. Look up capacitors and avoid those.

Yes you can turn them off in the UI, but they reset when there's a power outage. In a rural house it could mean doing it several times a day.

The motors often need oiling and the blades need cleaning.

After that, the cases are often just shoved in and are misaligned.

I have made my Honda totally silent. Watch me trigger people by leaving the lights on or opening the door with the keys in the ignition...:)

Very weird to get in a rental now.

When I delivered newspapers as a kid, one of my customers was a cadaverous dentist for poor people who used a slow speed drill...whew.

There's a beeper and there's a thing that makes it beep.

Before knowing that I'm #ActuallyAutistic I labeled myself as an introvert.

I wonder how often introverts are actually autistic, knowingly or not.

I can see that saying you're an introvert is a whole lot less to explain and would suffice in many situations.

Also curious to know if anyone @actuallyautistic considers themselves an extrovert?

Came to think of it while watching this: https://youtu.be/MdG4f5Y3ugk?si=QI5kdseAE1EuFHqj

There are verbally proficient NDs. And it's possible to act as one; before Lorna broke it open there were lots of those that were just adapting to get by and exhausted their whole lives.

I get that it's enticing to group the traits, I also think it's not that simple.

Look to older late-diagnosis people for examples and anecdotes.

Introverts are often seen as not verbally proficient when it's really just a preference not to speak.

Lorna Wing should be known to you if you care about ND, she brought it all out of one selfish man's office and coined the Aspergers term.

Wkipedia and neurotribes are suggested reading if you really dunno. I linked to her article on Wikipedia yesterday.

This isn't the place to teach a class. And I'm not doing essay questions.

Anyone else think better when their hands are busy? 🙋🏻

I read audiobooks while I'm sewing, solving visual puzzles, taking pictures, crafting, and just about anything else that doesn't involve words.

Today that's looking like playing with a new printing process while filling my brain with history and theory of nonbinary identities (in preparation for my ACES VCon talk next month).

I am not that interested, but I like trying things and find it interesting that it will not load decently in a very recent version of Seamonkey, but will sorta work in my ancient LTS version of Firefox (78).

On FF, if I wanted to make an account, the link doesn't work. But if I try to make a new community first, then then I can get the account-making page.

Lemmy is not really ready for production, in my eyes.

It is cool to see it up and working with neutral content, tho. Thx.
