I found this old software on a medium I don’t recognize at my church. Does anyone know if this has value to anybody? https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/2f12f213-08e0-4caf-9fb4-9a5960e12133.jpeg this
I remember upgrading my Macintosh computer from 512kB to A FULL MEGABYTE! Wow, what a difference, suddenly I could run two programs at once - even three small ones.
And the cost of leaving is significant. Not so much reddit content, but when I ditched Facebook many MANY years ago, I lost practically my entire social circle. Now that I still refuse to use Whatsapp (near exclusive messaging in this country) I lost the rest, and almost my spouse too.
I’ve seen a lot of recommends for Immich on here, so I have an idea what the answer here is going to be, but I’m looking for some comparisons between it and Photoprism I’m currently using Synology Photos, and I think my biggest issue is it’s lack of metadata management. I’ve gotten around that with MetaImage and...
I’m just trying out Immich and I’m really impressed, seems to be exactly what I’m looking for except for one thing. I am looking for something that is a central library for my family so we can all access the same photos and all upload to the same place....
For all the amazing work and effort that is being poured into the fediverse in the past several weeks, and in particular what we users can see with the Voyager app - this deserves to be said with great gratitude!...
I mean, if today i.e. is Sunday then someone long time ago should have said “Today will be Sunday” for the first time in a period from today that is multiple of seven. I was assuming that it was Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582, but looks like he is not. I failed in googling and duckduckgoing out the answer, so I ask for...
My son is afraid of reporting this to police because many of his friends work there, and he’s afraid of retaliation at school for being a “snitch”. This is not the first time he’s witnessed something very wrong and had to report it, that time to police, and he was targeted at school both physically and just with asshole...
I’m pretty sure this happened away from home and I’m just now noticing. The scratch is really deep hitting the metal in the deepest part. I have full coverage but I’m worried a claim will raise my insurance too much to be worth it. I’ve wrenched on cars before but never painted anything because it scares me....
You know those sci-fi teleporters like in Star Trek where you disappear from one location then instantaneously reappear in another location? Do you trust that they are safe to use?...
TLDR: I am running some Docker containers on a homelab server, and the containers’ volumes are mapped to NFS shares on my NAS. Is that bad performance?...
Unsure if babies can form memories ages 1-2, my oldest memory is from around age 3. They do learn words when they are around 1 year old, so there must be some capacity for memory? What is going on there?
I remember my 2nd birthday party. I was seated at the table and bunch of noisy kids were there. I remember thinking how much I disliked the noise and chaos.
For me it was Jeff Kinney. I was meeting a different author I love, but there wasn’t enough room downstairs and we had to go up. Turns out that’s exactly where Jeff Kinney works! He’s the author who got me into reading so I thought that was so cool
Sorry, noob here. I have been using Linux for a decade at least, but some basic stuff still stump me. Today, it’s file sharing: The idea is that the server is good at CPU and the NAS is good at storage. My NAS does run Docker but the services are slow; and my server runs a bunch of Docker containers just fine but has limited...
I totally get that Linux is by design a multi-user system, but it is frustrating to deal with when I am the only person to ever work with these machines. I know that my docker user+group is 1038/66544 but most docker commands require sudo so I am not even sure those values are the right ones. It is so non-transparent what ID’s are in effect, for what commands --and on what machine!-- when I am just me.
Thank you for this. I admit that I smiled at your tip to freeze the soaked filter, because freezing it requires the fridge/freezer combo to do so, and where does that unit vent its heat? Into our living space, of course.
So it’s a closed loop with losses, and I found that funny.
…but you still close the door when you go to the lavatory, right? Why? It’s not like we don’t know exactly what you do there.
The argument here is that it’s no secret, but it is personal and nobody’s business. If you don’t want Zuck to watch you pee then you should also not want him reading your texts to your lover.
This is sadly true for so much software, not just Linux but also many Linux application packages and self-hosting packages.
I tried to install Nextcloud yesterday, and failed at three completely different attempts/guides/packages. Same thing happened a year ago. Maybe I’ll try again in a year.
Having worked with preinstalling Windows with a major pc manufacturer, I will say that it is already such a freaking effort that nobody would want to do even more effort to install malware on top.
Notwithstanding so called partner apps… If there’s anything in those, I can’t say.
Indeed, many Netbooks come with a firmware dual boot. Besides the crappy Windows lite edition, there’s a tiny instant-on Linux too. Most people don’t use that, but it’s there.

Wait, he’s got a point though: Why not something like this:
A user wants to create a new community. He enters a name, then the system checks and informs that “the fediverse already has a community by that name +here and +here.” The user may still create this same community on this instance - or he might say, hey cool thanks, and go subscribe to (one of?) the existing ones instead.
I found that running just a NAS is no good because it lacks performance. And running just a server is no good because of data safety. So I run both.
I run a Synology NAS for storage, and an Ubuntu Box for services (Paperless, Mattermost chat, Photoprism gallery, Gitea for Code, picoshare, and lots other small stuff). All services run on Docker (plus Portainer for handling them, plus NPM for certificate handling and subdomains).
So I’m getting a promotion soon (yay!), moving up from just a line cook to sous-chef and I’ve only been with this company for a few months. Thing is that I’m still quite young (mid twenties) and will be the direct supervisor of some people a fair bit older than I am. Think 10-20 years older. It might just still be a bit of...
