Prototype for new Kbin app: Interstellar (kbin.social)

I've been working for the past week on a new kbin app. At the moment, it's just a prototype and only the "Feed" view has content (you can't sign into an account or post anything yet); you can see threads, thread images, thread comments, thread links, and thread votes/boosts. You can also change the "Theme Mode" and "Instance...

Ernest will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he's also said he'd prefer to leave aps to those for whome it is a core strength.
I think he knows it's something the community would like, so I think the post you link above was in reaction to Artimis unfortunately going offline and the App (for now) dieing with it (since nobody seems able to contact the developer). I suspect it's something Ernest will progress 'in his free time' if no other apps which live up to his ambitions are developed first!

This is great news! Thanks, and also great that you are making it source from the off!

RTR#35 User profile enhancements: sorting options, new date range filter, reputation points fix (kbin.social)

Today, I made some updates to the user profile. I've introduced the capability to sort and filter content. Additionally, I've implemented a new feature allowing content filtering based on a specified date range, which is now operational across all views. While there isn't a dedicated button in the interface yet....

Teppic,

I think it is down to not qualifying as hot. If you sort by new after posting you'll likely be able to see them.

RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes (kbin.social)

Today, I wanted to introduce you to Categories - a new feature that is essentially a multi-mags view. A new tab will appear in the user panel where you can create categories (public or private) and then add magazines to them (local or remote). In the magazine listing, there will be another tab that will list public categories...

/kbin logotype
Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I think it complements federation too. Suddenly you can have a collection of magazines sharing a name/topic from different instances all listed together in one place. That's really quite cool!

Teppic, (edited )
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

how it should work on kbin.social [?]

In my view ideally upvotes and downvotes federate both ways, but I can also see why some admins might choose not to federate in downvotes.

I guess the real question comes down to what you do with the information.
I think currently the sort order is very heavily skewed towards boosts (which I actually quite like), but I do also sometimes wonder how it would look if the sort order was aligned with the reputation system (i.e. boost= two upvotes).
Having both sort options available might be nice, (noting that we'll not federate in any boosts from Lemmy).

If we did federate in downvotes the current sort order (which seems based on boosts less downvotes?) probably wouldn't make sense?

...I'm also be keen to see others thoughts on this!

Edit: formatting

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

A key difference here is we can see who downvoted which I think makes people more cautious to downvote. I guess Lemmy users aren't used to that however (but it might change their behaviour when they realise we can see!)

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Indeed, and then there is a whole raft of searching, sorting and filtering options for Microblog posts (aka Toots) which kbin does, and which Lemmy can't even see.

Teppic, (edited )
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Or just type it in using the Google stock keyboard on Android... 😜
Edit: and kbin does very much support emoji.

RTR#21 Sub channel filters, spoiler tag (kbin.social)

Today, I added the subscription channel filtering option, allowing users to individually select content from subscribed users, magazines, and domains. This feature will be further improved over time. In addition to the sidebar, this option can also be changed in the user settings, which have also been slightly redesigned....

Hi @maegul, I just wanted to let you know. It's not perfect yet, but it's something I'll be working on in the coming months after the first release. Thanks for pointing it out, it's a relatively simple change, but it makes a significant difference in the overall experience.

@ernest Woah, this makes a heck of a difference. That's powerful!
I love the way that kbin gives you far more options to sort the Microblog feed than, say, Mastodon.

I love it!

Artemis.camp Instance (kbin.social)

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this. So if it isn't I apologize. For several days the artemis.camp instance was online but not operating optimally, and showing no new posts. It's been two weeks since I started writing the devlog and the return to coding. I'm okay with the results. I've managed to establish the routines that were much needed. Finally, I could start organizing the code, which will undoubtedly yield results in the future. Sometimes, you need to take a step back to gain the right pace...

Hello from kbin... (federated here too)
But this poses an interesting dilemma for Google, potentially to top 100 results could end up just being the same post observed on many Lemmy and kbin instances.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Hello! It's great to see you are back in action! It sounds like you've had a bit of a bumpy ride of late, so here's hoping for better times ahead.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Congratulations, you have a reputation of 1,427 as observed on kbin.social!
Kbin / mbin do expose reputation (karma) even for federated users. e.g.
https://kbin.social/u/@[email protected]

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Only it is more complicated than that too ...kbin has boosts as well as upvotes, and boosts count double, so reputation is:
Boosts x2 + upvotes - downvotes
and all of that is as observed by that instance, so much of your history could well be on communities the kbin instance doesn't know and didn't see.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

But they are taking about monitoring public facing social media - frankly I think it would be daft if they did not do this.
If a be teaching assistant starts publicly posting harmful harmful content there should indeed be systems on place to ensure this is identified and appropriate action taken.
If you post publicly you have to assume everybody, including your employer, might see it.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Look up hairy black holes. Hawking basically pointed out a paradox.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Posts and comments are federated (synchronised). Upvotes are actually a bit of a fudge, they are actually 'Favourites' if considered from an activity pub (e.g. Mastodon) perspective, and yes favourites are also federated.
Downvotes don't exist in activity pub and, as a result, they do not federate between instances.
At least that is my understanding.

soweli-mute, to kbinMeta

kbin is lowkey kinda complicated lol

there's so many different kinds of posts, microblogging, threads, etc.

lowkey a bit overwhelming.

Teppic, (edited )
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

@soweli There is certainly some truth to that, but

  1. it gets easeir farily quickly; and
  2. it's worth the effort! Other platforms don't give you the same power and breadth of access across the fediverse.

You'll find you get more interaction from within kbin (and also from Lemmy) if you use 'Threads' rather than 'Posts' (like this). Posts sit in the Microblog and are more aligned to Mastodon way of working - they are harder to see unless people already follow you.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

And here I am amused to be reading all the Lemmy centric replies to a Lemmy specific meme ... but doing it from elsewhere on the Fediverse. Here on kbin we interact with Mastodon just like we do with Lemmy. It all looks like one wonderful integrated fediverse from here!

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Not even sure it's EEE, they just clone and provide the clone of a good product for free and/or as part of windows.
Their products are usually only second best, but kill the market leader anyway.

Teppic, (edited )
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

A few things to remember here:

CEOs aren't daft, they will respond to manipulate the survey results to show what they want it to show. Through no fault by the survey this is likely not what CEOs really think.

Stated preference surveys are often undertaken to support investment decisions, but it is well known that 'stated preference' and 'realised preference' are often different things.

...also for many jobs better candidates will seek out more flexible employers. These same better team members will also more on if there is any suggestion they are being unfavorably treated due to flexible working arrangements. My point is, for many (not all) the employment market will force employers to accept more remote working than happened before the pandemic. There was a trend in this direction even before the pandemic, there is a perspective to say COVID was a catalyst for more remote working, and the return will never be complete.

There is a lot of focus on this one flagship instance, but there are a number of other kbin instances now: https://fedidb.org/software/kbin

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Interestingly, because of federation, this sort of happens anyway. If you'd hopped onto another kbin instance, or even Lemmy much of the content from magazines here was still accessable.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Afraid not, each instance is independent in that sense so you need to go through the whole account creation again (although you can use the same username again, assuming it's free).
That said, as with this instance, you can browse without needing to be logged in.

In terms of other kbin instances take a look here:

I think, eventually, this is where autonomous vehicles will really come into their own.
You are absolutely right that first mile/last mile is a barrier for rail travel - but imagine if we could design the station around a fleet of AV's.

Imagine:
Your AV takes you to the station, and parks right next the platform at the exact location along the train for your seat reservation.
You wait in your nice climate controlled AV for the train to arrive - hope out and onto the train.

Meanwhile somebody else gets off the train and uses the AV you've just vacated to complete their journey.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

These things all complement each other. Busses are great in urban areas, but they don't work well in rural areas, they just don't compare well vs private car when you look at generalized journey times (GJT).

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

All these things should work on harmony. In some situations busses and bikes don't work as well. Let's say you are going on holiday with luggage.
The end game is to reduce the the reliance on personal cars. Right now most people feel they need their own car. Much of this is down to first mile / last mile arguments.
Long headways, and high friction interchanges are things AVs could potentially help to eliminate one day. I would actively encourage consideration of multiple pickup and drop off by those AVs - key is we probably want to get people to their doors and we need high frequencies, or ad-hoc departure times to complete with car.

An admin deleted all my uploads and I have no clue why (lemmy.world)

I have been uploading comic art images by Moebius for several weeks almost daily to the !eurographicnovels community, where I´m a moderator myself. All those images have disappeared. I don't really have issue with a bot rate limiting, or suspending users (provided the false positive rate is low enough), but there does need to be a robust appeal and undo process which is the bit which seems to be lacking here.
