I’ve recently aquired the hardware to build a home server/NAS. I’d love to know some community-guided advice on tools I should consider, and what best practices are?...
I admit they were way too cheap for what they are (like 15% cheaper than same-size Ironwolf), so I gambled it haha there were no indications that these drives were OEM or similar....
I’ve been buying used 8TB HGST SAS drives on eBay for $50USD each, so far no issues but I really don’t care if they die. Basically disposable at that price point.
So as the title says, I run a homelab with various technologies — Proxmox, Home Assistant, a reverse proxy, lots of Ubiquiti equipment, and so on. Over the years I’ve consumed countless hours of articles, stack overflow posts, youtube channels, and knowledge bases to keep myself up to speed on how to use this equipment and...
Just kind of was thinking about it today, love photos and take a million of em, would be cool to be able to just buy some prints directly from Apple and have em mailed to you or to friends.
Agreed. I made photo yearbooks that way. They’re amazing. Guess they just weren’t in demand enough to keep the partnership going with their print service provider.
I have an old computer that I use for storing and streaming my media. It has an attached external drive. I would like to increase my storage and build something that could be extensible to at least 100TB. I am not worried about backup....
If you’re in it for the long haul buy a “cheap” used server off of eBay and upgrade it.
If you want something more inexpensive buy the cheapest case you can find with the most HD mounting points. Then get yourself a SAS controller from eBay and connect everything up.
Pretty much all of Canada was on fire this summer and the entire country was dumping carbon into the atmosphere at record levels, far greater than anything man made in a year, so some watches that are being offset is pretty low on my list of anxiety inducing items.
Global warming is a thing but we may already be well past the point of no return when countries like China and India don’t care in the race to industrialize everything.
Did you see the lineups of people buying them? Even locally here they had to have security people and queues to keep things organized. And people in some countries were lined up in the hundreds to buy and resell at even higher prices than what they paid.
There are lots of people with enough disposable income to buy them even at current prices.
already in the news: Apple is dumping China as fast as they can without majorly impacting their products. Manufacturing switching to other countries already.
Now that the 15 has USB-C, I’d like to see if it correctly supports USB-PD. Is there any way to tell the charging speed when you plug in your phone to charge? With my Android it would say “Charging Slowly”, “Charging” and “Charging Rapidly” or I could use some apps. I haven’t found anything with my iPhone though.
To be clear they said it did bend but kept working so it passed. The bend was only cosmetic and they said it still outperformed other phones that bent.
Good afternoon all, I have half-assed my backups for 15 years, and it is not sustainable, and I need your help! This works well enough, but is not in my mind a long term viable solution. 1x Apple Airport TimeCapsule...
One upon a time I might’ve suggested FreeNAS/TrueNAS but now that unraid supports ZFS there’s not a really compelling reason except if you can’t afford the license fee (which is very reasonable $59-$129 for a lifetime license depending on the license you want. If you don’t want ZFS you can run a standard XFS file system that can be accessed by basically anything. Parity expansion and all the good stuff.
Just saw your additional comment. You can run dockers for Plex and more or full VMs.
They also sometimes do Black Friday discounts to buy a basic license and fully upgrade it).
Look at videos by spaceinvaderone for some examples of what it can do. I have two pro licenses and it’s easily the best computer purchase I’ve made in the last two decades.
Have you seen or read about the 15 Pro/Max being more fragile? Some commenters suggest that the more rigid titanium chassis makes the glass more susceptible to cracking....
Just a few idiot YouTubers looking for easy clicks. I treat my devices properly and know that I’m carrying a 2 grand tiny computer in my pocket. I just don’t drop them or have accidents with them.
Ok I’m gonna be that guy. I wanted a silicone case but they were sold out for 15 PM, so I went for finewoven. It does feel very nice even if overpriced and not that durable.
No im not expecting a crazy lifespan but I can deal with that. When it starts to degrade I’ll be buying a leather case from a 3rd party, but wanted it cased from day 1. Partly because I love the look of leather and partially because I’m annoyed by the PETA types so it’s a double-win.
Since the update to iOS 17 the voice dictation on my iPad 6th gen is very slow. It lags several sentences behind and even when I tap the microphone icon to stop it, it needs another five to ten seconds to finish the text. The longer the text, the longer the time to finish the text. All was fine before the update. Have you...
It’s fine and not a big deal for me. I rarely charge by cable anyway. I wouldn’t have batted an eye had Apple removed the port entirely and said to do everything wirelessly.
Being able to connect accessories to it will be kind of handy though. I plan on plugging my usb c multi-dongle from my laptop into it and seeing how many things work. If it supports a usb c Ethernet dongle for networking that will be handy for work when I need to check ports for connectivity and speed.
Any big company that doesn’t do this is doing it wrong. You may not like it but that’s the way things work. But all big companies will eventually fall given enough time and management changes.

Bought a couple of Exos 7E10 8TB drives, warranty status says "initially sold as part of a larger system, contact seller". It means I can't take advantage of their five years warranty, doesn't it?
