Ohio voters: The extremist GOP Secretary of State is canceling votes, purging thousands of names recently from the voter rolls, right before this important referendum on abortion rights. Make sure you were not among them! Check here for your status: https://voterlookup.ohiosos.gov/voterlookup.aspx

Women of Ohio, This is the most important vote of your life. It will determine whether you will be a free person in your own right or whether you will be livestock who can be sentenced to be a living flesh coffin for an unviable fetus that could well kill you too if not aborted. Look at some of the stories out of TX, AL, FL.

Make sure you are still registered to vote. Make your stand!

It’s a remarkable book in many ways. The first person narrative, with the narrator, Jane, not knowing anything more than her perceptions inform her is a very unique POV. Of course there are many more things about the book to love. I read it over, have done so since 1961!

I haven’t posted much knitting and I realized that’s because I didn’t want to post pics I thought were too repetitive (left slipper and then right slipper) so I thought I’d wait till I was done and then I decided, hey, that’s silly. So here are some progress pics from the Scandinavian snowflake slippers. Both feet completed; stitches picked up and waste yarn snipped for cuff; one cuff complete and working on second cuff. #knitting #FiberArts @knitting @fiberarts #handmade

Slipper ready to have cuff worked. flexiflip needle on each side. Ends of waste yarn visible where it has been snipped and pushed inside slipper
Left: completed two color slipper with two color foot and blue cuff. Right: other slipper cuff in progress

Today in Labor History September 30, 1892: In the wake of the Homestead Steel Strike, union leaders were prosecuted for the crime of treason for the first time in U.S. history. Henry C. Frick, chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company, convinced the chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to issue warrants for the arrests of every member of the advisory board of the striking steel union for treason against the state. The 29 strike leaders were ultimately charged with plotting "to incite insurrection, rebellion & war against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." During the strike, Pinkerton detectives killed seven workers, who were protesting wage cuts of 18-26%. Alexander Berkman tried to assassinate Frick, but failed, and spent many years in prison. He wrote about his imprisonment, and about anarchism, in his “Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist,” published by Emma Goldman’s Mother Earth Press.

Hi😊 I just moved here from another server, so I thought I’d introduce myself: My name is Lisa.
My 1st love is books, a close 2nd is drawing/painting. I walk a lot & place a high value on daily exercise. I work in the field of ophthalmology, but have a background in teaching & aviation. I am married, w/ 2 teenaged boys. Originally I’m from SoCal, but have lived in TN for many yrs & love it. I am definitely a country mouse (vs. city mouse). The older I get, the more I enjoy cold weather, which has led to an obsession w/ sweaters & sweatshirt. There is also a corkscrew in my purse for red wine emergencies.#books #life #photography #introduction @bookstodon

"Greta Thunberg Could Face Jail Term After Second Blockade of Swedish Oil Port"

"The Swedish climate activist has been charged for a second time for failing to obey police orders."

(See the linked article at the bottom.)

Something I posted somewhere else:

Greta’s perceptive way of seeing the world in very literal, stark terms allows her to clearly see the climate crisis as an emergency, while so many others view climate change as an abstraction. To her it’s not an abstract threat, it’s an evident reality. That’s why she said this:

"Adults keep saying: “We owe it to the young people to give them hope.” But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act."

"I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is."

And she’s right. She began her activism all alone, sitting in front of the Swedish Parliament building holding a sign, while refusing to go to school. She thought school was impossible to attend while the planet was burning. She needed to voice this massive threat to young people. She began the school strike that grew to include other young people.

Yes, she is a hero.

A powerful, moving piece of writing. I was in Chicago until June ‘69, I remember reading about it, the Birmingham Bomb too, at least a sermon in church. Angela Davis on Democracy Now on 60th anniversary is so clear, insightful, and heartbreaking eloquent . Everyone should read it for truth and inspiration! When I was living on N.54th St in Phila there was a current song: ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ Yes, it will be and it is.

“Tell them about the dream, Martin,” gospel singer Mahalia Jackson urged Dr. King, “tell them about the dream.” And in 1963 he did - setting aside the prepared remarks for the March on Washington, and starting to ad lib a speech that still rings from the “prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire” to “the curvaceous slopes of California” to “every hill and mole hill of Mississippi.” https://theconversation.com/gospel-singer-mahalia-jackson-made-a-suggestion-during-the-1963-march-on-washington-and-it-changed-a-good-speech-to-a-majestic-sermon-on-an-american-dream-212067 @blackmastodon @histodons

Louis Daniel Armstrong's relationship with racism influenced not only his music but also the broader discourse on race in America. The barriers he broke as a Black musician are undeniable. The “Uncle Tom” criticism levied at him by some prominent Black Americans of the day was a reflection of the complex & sometimes contentious relationship between art, politics, & race in the United States.

On #RomaHolocaustDay, we pay tribute to the 500,000 Roma murdered under the Nazi regime.

Roma people still face racism and discrimination. This is why we continue working with the EU Countries on our Roma Strategic Framework for equality, inclusion and participation.

As the number of survivors and witnesses of these horrors dwindles, it is our duty to continue their remembrance and pass on their testimonies.
