When people were asking about fun Advent projects I completely spaced out on Imagined Landscapes yearly gnome adventure! If you’re still looking for a fun Advent thing check out the mystery gnome event Snow Matter What. She says it’s easy to catch up because the clues are small and spaced out (she has other good stuff between clues) https://www.imaginedlandscapes.com/snow-matter-what/

Treated myself for the first day of December. Although honestly i suppose I treat myself when I feel like it. I happened to realize a favorite indie dyer had just restocked her store and I could not resist. I now have more Little Lionhead Knits yarn when i have not yet used my previous sock sets. I bought one more thing but that might end up a gift so not sharing. #knitting #FiberArts @knitting @fiberarts (remove groups to reply)

25 hexiflats is a very very long way away from a blanket. I’ll have to to turn up the speed if I expect to hit a substantial blanket in the next several years (17 so far this year). These are for my variation on a Beekeeper’s Quilt (unstuffed hexagons). #knitting #FiberArts @knitting @fiberarts (remove groups to reply)

I noticed the Norwegian purl videos often also feature the Norwegian method of tensioning the yarn and so far I just do not get it! Arne and Carlos are very insistent this is the most relaxed way to hold the yarn. It’s some kind of pinching method, no extended index, and no wrapping around the pinky. If anyone has tips on how to “get” this please send. @knitting @fiberarts remove groups to reply

consumablejoy,
@consumablejoy@wandering.shop avatar

@knitting @fiberarts I keep watching these Arne and Carlos videos and trying to hold the yarn like he does and I am finding my hand way more tense than in my normal method. I can only assume this is because it is so new to me. they keep saying that it is more relaxing and less likely to induce tendinitis. I’m going to try the Norwegian method of holding the yarn a little more but if I don’t like it I am going to do what works best for me because… it’s my knitting, my choice!

I have learned the Norwegian Purl! I have never found purling in continental knitting / picking that difficult actually, but I am definitely preferring the look of the ribbing I am getting with alternating knitting with the Norwegian purl. #knitting #FiberArts @knitting @fiberarts remove groups to reply

And here it is in all its unblocked glory: my Bumblebee Acres Farm Return of the King advent 2022 Painting (big) Honeycombs shawl from Stephen West. Day 1 at bottom (curled so you can’t really see it). Full skein used for honeycombs. Close-up shows the earlier days and a pin of Aragon that came in the advent set. I’m hoping blocking will help even out all the little weirdnesses and also make it larger. Happy with it overall. @knitting @fiberarts #knitting #FiberArts

Officially cast off my Painting (big) Honeycombs Advent Shawl! Here is a pic of just the last part of the shawl. I have a lot of ends to weave in plus some serious blocking to do. One observation is that it also seems like my gauge is a lot looser so honeycombs are a lot bigger now than they were when I worked on this project last year. Hopefully it won’t be obvious after blocking. Excited to be done! More pics soon. @knitting @fiberarts

Getting so so close to the end of last year’s advent shawl. However it turns out there is 1 more honeycomb row than I expected because I didn’t realize the pattern was saying do 34 honeycomb rows and then do one more. Happily it doesn’t throw off much (just one extra honeycomb of the last color). I have 3 more rows of honeycombs or a total of 4 1/2 honeycombs to go before a 25 stitch icord bindoff. @knitting @fiberarts (remove groups to reply)

Working on my doodle socks. I’m bad at color selection. For colorwork it’s good to take a b&w pic of the yarns together to ensure you have good contrast for the colors to stand out from each other. I didn’t in this case and even though it “might” be ok (my partner insists it stands out well) when you look at the black and white pic you can see why I find the contrast to be not good enough. @knitting @fiberarts

Same sock, black and white pic. Bottom section is pale blue with orange motif, but it is very very hard to see the motif. Low contrast

I ordered 2 yarn tensioning rings because although I normally do stranded knitting with one color in each hand, doing 3 color knitting was hard and I thought the ring guide might help. Even 2 color knitting, it seems like the ring guide could help with making it easier to capture long floats. Plus, knitting bling, how could i resist? But I have never tried to tension 2 yarns in one hand before so this is me just learning and trying to get the hang of it. @knitting

Experiments of entrelac with self-striping DK - the entrelac is working out pretty well. The overlap of same color rectangles on top of each other has been relatively minimal so far so I’m pleased with that. Unfortunately the expansion ratio from cuff to entrelac is too much so it wouldn’t make a good fingerless mitt at this size. I’ll rip out and begin again at some point (when I’m not working on one of my multiple other WIPs) #knitting #FiberArts @knitting @fiberarts

Must Stash DK experiments Part 4: entrelac in the round with self-striping continues. The blue made it through 4 1/2 rectangles which means the white will make it through a similar number and probably double back on itself, which is not ideal (white rectangle stacked on white).

Photo shows view from above of entrelac tube on flexiflips and a leather stitch cord through first all knit round as a lifeline.

Also practiced new-to-me technique of “purling backwards” which is really producing a knit stitch on the RS while working left to right with RS facing. Very helpful for entrelac! No need to keep turning the fabric

I wound some Must Stash yarn and dug around in my books today for some inspiration. I found a couple of crumpled pieces ripped out of a magazine and folded into my Entrelac book with this pattern for entrelac socks… I would have been really sad if I couldn’t find this pattern again (as with a few that are now out of print) so I have officially photographed it and stored it in my note taking app. Here’s the Ravelry link https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/entrelac-socks @knitting

Halfway through day 22 of my Advent painting (big) honeycombs shawl. It starts wide and gets narrower which means each row is shorter (yay) so right now I am doing 2 rows of honeycombs per day (see orange honeycomb row at the top) and then the last 2 days will be three rows of honeycombs each. @knitting @fiberarts

Inspired by @terri ‘s link to Must Stash Yarn, watching Nancy Ricci’s “it’s just a rectangle” class from KnitStars, and the idea I had for entrelac with self-striping yarns - I ordered some self-striping DK from Must Stash to see if I can make my vision work for fingerless mitts with entrelac. I’m going to end up an entrelac knitting pattern designer (stay tuned for the next time I do an “Adventrelac” cowl and actually write it up) @knitting

This year’s series kicked off with Nancy Ricci “it’s just a rectangle” which is really her way of saying anyone can design. She talks about how her curiosity led to her learning by doing. The 1st task is 6 swatches with chunky yarn on different sized needles and think about what you would do with the different fabrics that result. I am inspired by the idea that swatching in itself should be fun, heard this year from both her and Patty Lyons. @knitting

I decided to pick up last year’s advent project for which i am currently on Day 19 so only 6 days left to do (my set is 25 minis and a full sized skein). October was apparently unofficial “knit things with worsted yarn” month for me and has led to my most projects completed from start to finish in one month ever. Yes, here is my 4th bonus project. These are Batten Slippers in worsted weight Icelandic yarn. So cozy! And kind of a fun construction with i-cord start before picking up and knitting cuffs separately and joining together. @knitting @fiberarts

Another bonus #FallFinishAlong FO! My first completed brioche project is this Harlow Hat in worsted yarn. It hasn’t been blocked yet but I’m calling it anyway. I will block it eventually but it’s wearable now. There are a few errors here and there I’ve decided to ignore. The biggest issue is that the tubular cast on is not, well, tubular. I’m going to practice and make sure i get it right for the next time. #knitting #FiberArts @knitting @fiberarts

@thegiddystitcher Didn’t join the lemmy version (yet), just responded to the post appearing over here!

consumablejoy,
@consumablejoy@wandering.shop avatar

@thegiddystitcher I used alpaca once and the biggest challenge for me was that they don’t have the same elasticity as wool so the didn’t stretch and then snap back the way I would have wanted. Probably should not have done a stranded color pattern with alpaca. Can’t tell you too much about how well they wore because I didn’t wear them much even though they were beautiful.

And they are done! My second bonus project, colorblock camp socks from Ozetta with bonus contrast toe. These worsted socks probably won’t fit in my shoes but they’ll work in boots and be good around the house. The Icelandic yarn has an interesting texture. I hope it softens up with a soak. I need to remember these are non-superwash or I’m going to end up with felted baby slippers instead of adult socks ;) @knitting @fiberarts

I know I’m being redundant here but I can’t help thinking it every time I pick them up - worsted weight socks are so much faster to make than fingering socks. I cast on this morning and even with only a little time to knit just finished the heel flap. I could go further but instead I’m going to call it a night and save turning the heel for tomorrow. @knitting @fiberarts

I’m bouncing back and forth between two projects right now, each relatively fast. I finished the first Colorblock Camp Sock last night. I cast on a pair of worsted weight socks because I was looking for something that required less attention than the WIPs I had next to me and because I got this Icelandic Lettlopi just to make them. I have now made it to the point where I have to pick up stitches for the gusset so it is no longer brainless again. On the other hand, I continue to be amazed at how fast it is to make socks when they only require 40 stitches! @knitting @fiberarts

Wine Grapes tonal yarn - dark purplish blue with tones of lighter and darker - one skein on top of a pile of packaged yarn

I know, I know l, I said I was going to skip a yarn advent this year… but then The Blue Brick came out with a mood board I love. AND instead of 24 days of fingering plus a full skein, it’s 12 days of DK “minis” and a full skein. 12 days of DK seems so much more manageable even if it is something like 2000 yds total. A lap blanket sounds fabulous. https://shop.thebluebrick.ca/products/the-12-days-of-christmas
