If the world were 4 degrees warmer we’d see “valuable shipping” routes in the Arctic and “ideal growingt conditions” in Canada.
Bitch, Canada is currently burning down due to out-of-control global warming. British Columbia doesn’t have ideal growing conditions, it is on fire. The weather is stifling, the air is hot, the skies are covered in smoke.
The world getting 4 degrees warmer is a potential human extinction event and I’m reading about “valuable shipping” routes? This kind of thinking is why we’re fucking here! Fuck capitalism.
According to this map the world’s most highly populated regions have to leave (India, China, Brazil) and I guess move up here to Canada or to Siberia? I’m sure Canada and its 13 billion people will be happy.
Which, if you live in Canada now, is a complete joke. And even people who would counterpoint, “well, we’re talking about a habitable subarctic zone” then simply Google “Yellowknife” and tell me how habitable it’ll be.
I mean, the history of the planet involves mass extinction events when 95% of species died off so… not really? Life finds a way to continue on but human extinction is an extremely likely scenario under out-of-control climate change.
I’ve shared this story before but maybe not on Lemmy:
Landed in Amsterdam in 1997 for the beginning of a six month backpacking tour through Europe (obligatory cliché thing to do for every 22-year-old). First thing outside the airport I notice is these big roomy sidewalks. So much space! So much freedom! So much—holy shit where did these bicycles come from? I quickly found out their sidewalks were highways for their insane bike infrastructure. Just bikes everywhere as far as the eye could see.
It’s interesting, I was watching a video about Russian history and apparently Ukraine hated Russia for the famine in 1932 and 1933. So when the Nazis rolled into Ukraine they were welcomed as heroes. Historians believe that if the Nazis had worked with the Soviet satellite nations to create buffer zones around the Reich that they potentially could have created a good defence barrier to Soviet aggression. Similar, of course, to how NATO works today.
Instead, the Nazis, in their infinite stupidity, wanted to exterminate Slavs and create lebensraum, so they united the Ukraine people with Russians for 75+ years. Ukraine even handed away their defensive capabilities (nuclear weapons) to Russia in exchange for a permanent peace pact. And Russia went and blew it all and created enemies again.
It amazes me that there isn’t a mass exodus going on in the US
This may blow your mind but there’s thing called “laws” that prevent Americans from simply moving to another country and living there. You need to immigrate, you need paperwork, you need a job, you need to prove to their country that you’re useful there… you know, all the things Americans do to other countries.
I mean, yes, would I like to move to Germany tomorrow? Absolutely. Can I? No, it’s not that simple.
My mother is literally German and most of my family is as well, and I can prove direct lineage. But I can’t get Germany citizenship because the laws are so strict.
You’re right, Great Britain is easier for the children of Europeans, but other countries (possibly Denmark as well) are hard.
Oh for sure. Your EU citizenship is infinitely more valuable than my German lineage. The EU is a very sweet deal. I can’t how stupid Britain was to leave.

I never got into original series (and I existed before TNG) but something about TNG clicked.
Picard was a man of culture, not some Macho man to sleep with aliens of different colours.
Riker really came into his own as a second and had a different personality and perspective that added to the show
Data explored the concepts of AI and sentience and that mankind could create a new being (The measure of a man episode).
Jordi Laforge was inspiring that people with disabilities could be important and high ranking and overcome those challenges.
Sure, OS has its charm with fake Scottish man and Sulu and the radical idea not all Russians were insane. But I mean, Bones was just such a cliche (dammit Jim) and never really grew on me the way I’m sure he did the generation that loved John Wayne.
I’m just a little bit late to the Baldurs Gate 3 party, but I searched on here and didn’t see much follow up discussion about it after the review thread. I’m also trying to submit more to Lemmy so the communities can grow, so I thought I’d bring it back up now that it has been out for a few weeks....
The photos app on windows 11 is very good. It can read raw files and display them and has a pretty good auto-colour correct function. I wouldn’t uninstall it.
While it’s silly to suggest all these things are bad for you, TikTok genuinely is a braindead exercise in scrolling attention-hungry morons posting videos that are overall worthless contributions to the planet.
For example, I’m sure the average joe doesn’t know just how expensive calligraphy pens can be, or how deep the rabbit hole goes on video game speedruns.
I think rock climbing has a fairly interesting cost curve, you’re right.
Bouldering in the gym: Membership fees, shoes, chalk bag.
Bouldering outside: Crash pad, gas to crag, shoes, chalk bag.
Sport climbing in the gym: Rope, belay device, shoes, chalk bag, membership fees.
Sport climbing at the crag: Rope, belay device, quickdraws, shoes, chalk bag, gas to crag
Trad climbing: Rope, belay device, rack, shoes, chalk bag, gas to crag
And then if you add ice climbing and mountaineering you’re really screwed. Thousands of dollars in goretex, travel, supplies, rescue kits, avalanche training, etc
Mountaineering was the next level I couldn’t afford to join my friends on.
Photography can start with your smart phone and get expensive in a hurry.
Digital SLRs begin at $2k and the lenses range from $400 to $3,500. The more you try and break into high end photography the more insane the costs are.
I probably dumped about $10k into cameras and realized I still wasn’t that good at it. That’s the painful thing. Realizing your skill doesn’t match your fancy tech.
My wife and I started talking about this after she had to help an old lady at the DMV figure out how to use her iPhone to scan a QR code. We're in our early 40s.
All generations end up having their day when they’re unable to use new technology. So yes, of course, there will be a time when teenagers today becomes 80 and are utterly confused how to use something new.
yeah, I’m 49 and Discord is just something I never got into. It’s a ton of message spam and there’s all these hoops you have to jump through to join channels on servers to find the people you want to connect with. I usually only use Discord to join gaming servers to ask questions when I’m stuck on something rather than lower myself to asking on Reddit.

Nazis were very stupid people. Conservatives in Germany in the 30s were appalled at these chicken farmer bumpkins trying to tell them about what true German values were. They oozed of anti-intellectualism and refused to educate or read. Which is how these morons invaded Russia in winter.
True but climate change has made Canada very hot the past few years. I live in the west where we had a heat dome in 2021 that reached nearly 50C and burned down an entire town.
The capital of Northwest Territories is currently on full evacuation from wildfires.
Donald Trump logic refers to believing something simply because you believe it without evidence or facts. I was insulting the bloated orange tiny handed man
