I like the way /r/3DPrinting handled ads. Their mods put it like this,

“It’s okay for a Redditor to have a business and share it. It’s not okay for a business to have a Reddit account and do the same.”

Basically, does that account contribute to the community outside of their business? If so, I don’t take issue with it.

Ill throw in some obscure ones I use daily.

  • StemRoller. It’s an AI-powered toolthat takes an mp3 and separates each instrument into its own file. Im a musician, and having access to stems like this is a game changer.
  • Carla is a tool for hosting VST plugins without the need for a full DAW. I primarily use Amp Simulators, and this has become a mandatory tool on any computer I use. It’s also maintained by the creator of KXStudio.

an analysis of historical video game availability shows that only 13% of classic video games are currently commercially available across consoles and time periods, and only 3% of games prior to 1985

As much as I support and endorse game preservation, this doesn’t seem like a shocking number. I wonder what percentage of those games are actually worth playing?

You just named a bunch of games that have been released on other consoles/pc.

What I’m referring to are all the garbage games released. Think licensed titles, and all the crap that led to the market crash in the 80’s.

Also you most certainly can buy old consoles and games at a store. I do it all the time.

If your budget allows snag yourself a Prusa. They’re very well made, and Jeff Prusa more or less invented the modern 3D Printer. Creality makes fine printers, but you’ll spend more time maintaining it than actually printing. I have an Ender 3 V2 and wish I had saved up to get a better printer. I don’t have any personal experience with other brands.

You’ll need to use a CAD program to make models. TinkerCAD is a great free option. You’ll also need to “slice” that model up for printing using a slicer. I personally use PrusaSlicer, but there are others as well.

If you’re asking these kinds of questions that tells me you’re brand new to all of this. I recommend checking out Thomas Salanderer, CNC Kitchen, and Teaching Tech on YouTube. They’re all great at explaining the minutiae of this hobby.

Edit: Do yourself a huge favour and get a model with a self-levelling bed, or at the very least a bed-level probe.

@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

My Ender 3 V2 needs a complete frame check between each print. It’s the only way Ive managed to get consistent prints. At least the design is Open Source!

Ah yes, the daily audiobook thread. If only there was a way to search for old posts!

If you’re in a major city theres likely a recycling centre just for old office machines. You can snag them dirt cheap, but with no Harddrive. Theyre a bit dated, but will work great as a server.

Plex Debrid doesn’t actually download the file to your computer, it just streams it. It tricks your OS into thinking it’s locally stored, but it isn’t.

Until AskHistorians moves Ill still be using reddit. I make a point to use LibReddit instead of the actual site though.

How do you overcome the fears of using your home IP to join a private tracker?

I’m considering joining my first private tracker. It turns out that most of them need you to pass an interview connected through your home IP. I understand this is a reasonable way to filter scammers and duplicate accounts. Still, to those who did it, how do you feel knowing your main IP is stored and associated to your...

Actual Hidden Gems on Steam

I love obscure and overlooked games and want to share a bunch with all of you. Most “hidden gem” threads end up listing titles with thousands of reviews or that got some level of marketing. I aim to mostly avoid that. While you may see a few familiar games here, everything in the list below has under 1500 reviews on Steam...

I use VOIP for my phone at home.

I really like it. It’s dirt cheap compared to other phone plans, and you get a lot of really great features. The novelty of being able to upload any mp3 I want as my voicemail is worth it.

Setting up selfhosting without a terminal

Every single time I talk to my friends, whom also want an *arr/Plex/VPN/Home Assistant setup like I’ve got, I can see the fear in their eyes when I mention Debian, Docker, and the terminal. It could be a case of “git gud”, but I want to help them out with a setup like this, but with as low friction as possible. Ideally...

The moment you help them set it up you also agree to being their IT Support when anything goes wrong. Do you really want to deal with that?

Mugmoor,
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I believe in the concept that if you create something, you should be able to profit from it. What I take issue with is hoarding ideas and properties (particularly artwork) in a way that prevents others from enjoying them in their own way.

It gets more complicated with art. An artist no longer owns that art once it's in the public. Sure, they own the original idea and should be able to support themselves with that, but if I want to make a derivative work then there should be no barriers to allowing me to do so.

It's a hard line to walk, and I'm constantly reevaluating where I think that line is. Right now piracy for me is a way of "test driving" content. If I like it and want to support it, I will purchase it later. This is how I am able to have bookshelves filled with books I've actually read, and video games I've actually played. The ones I don't enjoy/buy were never going to get a purchase from me anyhow, so they've lost nothing.

I'm not nearly intelligent or well-read enough to know how to apply that to modern copyright laws, but that's the essence of how I see it.

Mugmoor,
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Once you've gotten a copy of the base game and DLC, you can use https://steamworkshopdownloader.io to download the mods you want.

My brother and I share our Netflix. What I did was setup Tailscale on my computer, and have him connect to it. We also use it for LAN gaming, and it provides him access to my various web services (like Plex).

Tailscale is an implementation of the Wireguard VPN protocol. It'll basically make Netflix think you're at the same IP as the host machine. Tailscale is free as well, which is a bonus. It will provide you with absolutely no protection if you're torrenting though. You'll want a paid VPN provider for that.

If you need assistance hop over to https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/[email protected] (not sure how to properly link to other instances yet).

Mugmoor,
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I'd go the other direction and choose Debian. It's what Ubuntu is based on, and actually lives up to the spirit of FOSS.

Mugmoor,
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I dunno. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes right? Don't get me wrong, it's still tragic what happened to most of those people, but I don't have much sympathy.

Mugmoor,
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ah, that's because you're a decent human being with a conscience! I guess it depends on what you consider "making fun" of them. For me, I would want to make sure I'm being respectful to those who are now grieving., but ridiculing the stupidity and hubris of some of those involved seems fair game to me.

What is your favorite password manager?

I started digging into opensource password managers and found that they all suck major ball sack. I ended up picking nothing. My two runner-ups were bitwarden.
