I never knew someone who used FB Messenger for SMS

sudo nala upgrade

I like nala, it’s a front end for apt

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

If you use nala (frontend for apt) when you drop a “nala upgrade” it automatically calls update first

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not better but nicer, and easier to see history.

I’m in a big city (Montreal) and about everything is delivered in less than 24h, I must say it’s pretty convenient…

Magister,

I’ve been using both daily, for 25+ years. Windows is not hard to use, but harder to configure now, having multiple paths/ways to configure the same thing like settings, old control panel, command line, regedit, group policy, is sometimes shitty. Everything else works fine in win10 or 11.

What hype?

Same boat, I like FOSS, using linux for 20+ years yada yada android custom ROM hack stuff what not, but 10 years ago I tested all the reddit app, Sync was far superior so I bought it for like 3$. Now Sync for Lemmy is an impressive experience compared to Jerboa or Connect for instance, so I forked the 20$ for the noads version. Dev looks like a great guy, I have no problem with this.

np my friend 👍🏻

Well, not small objects per se, but wood furniture, real wood, not laminate shit. I have some real wood furniture for more than 25 years, table, chairs, sideboard/dresser, etc. Some are even antique bought for $25 25 years ago.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

or even Connect, which is not open source and used/praised by thousands of people

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

You can also use Sync for free

I have used a mixed of Netscape/Firebird/Firefox mostly for personal uses, along with at the time IE then Chrome mostly for professional stuff and banking (at the time) and developing. But for ~3 years now it’s FF only, even on my phone. Google started their AMP stuff and all, and this DRM is the shit hitting the fan.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

I did with my old samsung, motorola, asus, nokia. But my last phone, PoCo F3, no, especially because it’s difficult to have a working Google Wallet with unlocked bootloader/root. I did it with my asus zenphone and nokia, but damn it broke every few weeks with a google update, and you needed to patch after patch after faking stuff and magisk addons etc for it to run a couple of weeks and BAM! Google Pay was disabled again… very annoying.

On my F3 I disabled/uninstalled unwanted apps with a debloater and I’m using Firefox for browsing. No need to root yet. When I’ll change phone I’ll root the old one.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Can you use Google Wallet and tap to pay with it?

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but if I cannot tap to pay, it’s a no for me…

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Seriously, Sync is fantastic, way ahead of others apps

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I bought it, no ads no tracking

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

It’s also because I used Sync Pro on Reddit for 10 years, and this is the same exact experience with Sync for Lemmy! I bought Pro something like $3 10 years ago and $20 today. The developer is pretty good.

Magister,

This will be built-in Google Play for all Android 6+, no need for external app

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

There’s an official apple version on Google Play too just search for com.apple.trackerdetect

It’s incredible, I remember in the 90s in university, some students were king of Latex and made incredible beautiful paper full of complicated mathematical formula and such

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, I saw almost all of them in theater when they were released, except Shawshank I never saw it, yeah I know it’s about the best movie in the world, but I never saw it, go figure. And I have not seen Maverick too.

True, here I redirect every NTP request to my own timeserver

Lost was completely incredible, I remember waiting week after week for new episode, then going in lostforums for hours to read everything!

You can also buy MiniPCs from bee-link or others with same AMD or others powerful ones for cheap, if you don’t absolutely need a laptop

thank you Linux for giving a damn about Bluetooth headphones (feddit.de)

For context, LDAC is one of the few wireless audio codecs stamped Hi-Res by the Japan Audio Society and its encoder is open source since Android 8, so you can see just how long Windows is sleeping on this. I’m excited about the incoming next gen called LC3plus, my next pair is definitely gonna have that.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

For me it all depends on what I connect to, my head unit in the car defaults to AAC, my portable BT speaker is using LDAC, my bookshelf is using AptX-HD.

Thanks Android for supporting all of them automatically!

At first there was so network instability and compatibility problem that I used PWA and Jerboa and Connect and switched between them multiple times a day.

Now I’m using Jerboa almost exclusively as everything seems more stable.

I’m waiting for Sync 😊

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

it works, no auto play, but it works, in Firefox

Usage for Old Notbook (lemmy.world)

So my wife has a 10 year old low end notbook. 500Gb of storage (HDD), 2GB of GDR3 RAM, and an intel Celeron Processor N2806. It originally came with Win 8, then she “upgraded” to win 10 and after that it was pretty much unusable. I am talking CPU and Ram about 80-90% in idle, opening a browser got everything down to a crawl....

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

I also got an old notebook, atom N260 32 bits, 3GB of RAM. I put a 128GB SSD, then I installed MX Linux with Xfce (MX21.3_386) and it’s usable for light tasks. Yes browsing heavy sites is slow, but everything else works pretty well.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

I’m trying app for a month, problems were mostly from instance network unstable and all, at some point only PWA was ok.

Now the latest Jerboa is stable and pretty nice, in list mode. Connect is updated every day with new features and bug fixes.

I’m waiting for Sync.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

The problem I see here is between lemmy.ca and Beehaw.org, they are federated both way but out of sync completely, no mirroring, no pull, nothing.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

I’m doing the same, I have Jerboa and Connect, switch between them to try. Last days had a lot of network or html errors, it’s more stable now, I’m still not decided…

What I like from Jerboa is the kind of official app and open source. What I like about Connect is the developer is superactive and sometimes release multiple times a day, bugfix, new features, etc, really impressive.

I’m also waiting for Sync because I am a 10yo SyncPro user.

I also have a PWA shortcut on my screen because in case apps are badly crashing or whatever, the PWA link works pretty well.

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t even work right, lemmy.ca and beehaw.org are not synchronized even if they federate with each others, certainly the same with multiple instances.

YSK: Signal is a great secure private messenger app comparable to others on the market. (restoreprivacy.com)

“When you use Signal, your data is stored in encrypted form on your devices. The only information that is stored on the Signal servers for each account is the phone number you registered with, the date and time you joined the service, and the date you last logged on.”...

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, I used Signal for years, it was my standard “messager” for everyone, people with Signal too or regular SMS. since they dropped SMS, I dropped Signal…

Why IBM got a reputation of destroying everything they touch?

After the Red Hat mess I see many people saying IBM destroys everything they touch, but I can’t think of many examples of it. Can you tell me what else IBM has destroyed after acquiring it, or something good that they themselves developed and then ruined it with stupid corporate choices?

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

Having used PC for a long time, I’d say… The PC 😁

MCA bus for instance

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

True, I opened my account June 1st on Beehaw, lemmy.world didn’t exist yet. But I had to open an account on LW when BH defederated them…

If beauty is tightly associated with facial symmetry, then why doesn’t everyone have their hair part down the middle?

Edit: to clarify, I know that many short hair styles don’t have a part at all. Mostly talking about people with hair long enough to have one. I find it interesting that many studies conclude that beauty is tightly correlated with how symmetrical someone’s face is. However, many haircuts and hair styles are asymmetrical,...

Magister,
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have any more hair lol
