JTskulk,

Nah, the BIOS is what launches the operating system, therefor they are separate.

JTskulk,

My man right here gets it :)

JTskulk,

“less often discussed is TikTok’s power to radically distort the world-picture that America’s young people encounter” LMAO they really do hate competition, don’t they?

JTskulk,

All my windows snap like that, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Just go to System Settings, search for snap, go to Window Behavior, click on Movement tab at the top. You can configure your window snapping preferences here.

JTskulk,

No, I don’t use Windows. Steam is built using qt which my whole desktop is built with, the qt devs like snapping windows and I like them too :)

JTskulk,

Are there any mods to make it like StarCraft? I need aliens and spaceships and lasers and fast-paced 🙂

What sci-fi stories bring out a strong emphasis on family (self made or born into) to you? (lemmy.world)

For me I would say “The Expanse” is a huge one. If there was ever a self made family, the crew of the Rocinante is one of the best. The amount of time they spend together and how they congeal into life long partners and friends in the face of some truly awful events is really inspiring to me.

JTskulk,

This image remind anyone else about antitaco legislation?

JTskulk,

Overhaul that shit right into the dumpster.

JTskulk,

This company also sponsors a really cool podcast where they talk OGs of computing. It’s called “on the metal”

JTskulk,

Get me some brains and I’ll let you know.

JTskulk,

I only hate it because I can’t figure out how to run a blocking script before everything else when a suspend is initiated.

JTskulk,

I guess not because in my attempts to get this working I did put a script there. Does * expansion not work in these scripts? Mind sharing your script if you still have one? I have 3 tabs open to learn systemd when I have time, I did watch a video so far :)

JTskulk,

I’ll check it out, thanks bro!

JTskulk,

I beat the new System Shock, there is an fps chess section.

JTskulk,

I would encourage it to, I think one could do better job like in the series of books “Arc of a scythe”

Perl still relevant in 2023/24?

hi, i was interested if perl is still relevant in this day and age. Perl has been on the decline for a very long time now. Perl 6 (now named 'raku) not being backwards compatible with perl 5 code made the already small perl community even smaller by splitting it in half. A good example is lisp with it’s thousands of different...

JTskulk,

I think it’s an autocorrect typo. Should be: If it is actually a single line, I’d argue that you do.

JTskulk,

Bro if you’re having a hard time finding porn on the Internet, the problem is you!

JTskulk,

This kind of shower controls are the best. I had this on my shower but right now my place is gutted for a remodel. I really want to get the same exact kind that you have. It’s super convenient because you set the temperature once and then adjust the pressure separately. You don’t have to constantly tune it to the right temperature with every shower.

JTskulk,

Right, they’re removing it because they can’t get maintainers. It’s obsolete, nobody ever said they’re removing it because of Hans Reiser.

JTskulk,

The Expanse is a little slow for the first couple of episodes, it picks up after that.

JTskulk,

As I said elsewhere in this thread, the first couple of episodes of the Expanse are kinda slow. It picks up if you stick with it :)

I’m still mad they ended it early :(

Trying to find the right Linux distro: What do you think I need to research more?

Good morning everyone. I’ve got the age old question of what distro should I use. I got started with Ubuntu and eventually moved to Linux Mint Cinnamon. I’m pretty happy with using it as a daily driver, and it’s worked reasonably well with my NVIDIA graphics card. I enjoy a bit of the “it just works” I’ve experienced...

JTskulk,

Just pick Debian or endeavor.

GhostCowboy76, to trees
@GhostCowboy76@mastodon.social avatar

@trees Do y’all grind fresh every time you smoke, or pre grind a bunch and store it in something? Right now I grind every time I smoke.

JTskulk,

If you grind every time you smoke, you’re not using a volcano. I grind about once a week because that’s when my bowl runs out.

JTskulk,

I used to do this too and hold my breath for like 45 seconds per hit. I felt really stupid after reading that it’s absorbed instantly, I had been doing this for years lol

JTskulk,

I think I absolutely was. A little lightheadedness isn’t bad though :)

JTskulk,

Oh dude, this is my time to shine, please listen to my story. I bought my volcano about 18 years ago after watching this really stupid TV show that had a segment about the best way to get stoned. They said something like joints get you 25-35% of the THC, bongs are 55-65%, vaporizers are 85-95%. I said shit, I’m not giving up smoking weed any time soon so I might as well invest in my future. I bought it for like $450 at a sketchy open market in LA. I parked the Porsche I was driving behind a bunch of men in cowboy clothes drinking beer on their pickup truck in the middle of the day. Everyone was super nice and my car still had all 4 wheels when I returned.

The Volcano is fucking great. You can see how strong your dose is going to be, there’s no smoke, it cools down in the bag, it never irritates my throat, and when smoking with people everyone gets to hit fresh greens from the bag. The thing is built by the Germans so it’s a fucking tank, and not the kind that freeze up in the Russian winter. In the 18 years I’ve had it, the only thing that broke is the air switch that was easily and cheaply replaced and one screw rattled out and disappeared.

As for efficiency, I bought a large ziplock bag full of weed in February of 2018. After sharing a lot with friends, I finally ran out like 2 months ago. For those too stoned to do the math, my volcano made my bag of weed last for over 5 fucking years. I would easily make 1 bowl last about a week before packing a new one, smoking once every day.

I can’t recommend the Volcano enough. The only downside is that it’s not portable and you have to wait 6 minutes for it to heat up, but that’s never been an issue. I bought the Crafty from Storz & Bickel too and it’s really great for a portable device. Please take my advice. Save up the money and get yourself a Volcano, you won’t regret it!

JTskulk,

Tell me about it dude, your stash literally going up in smoke. It’s 2023 people, use technology instead of paper!

JTskulk,

Opening up a browser to look up commands to copy and paste is a lot easier than looking up registry fixes and mimicking screenshots into GUIs. I fix Windows for a living and the crazy shit I see daily blows my mind. It seems like in Windows I’m doing the same thing multiple times until it (hopefully) works but in Linux the problem is easier to identify and fix.

JTskulk,

I can’t upvote you hard enough. I built a new machine in April when it was finally time to get off of Windows 7. I thought I’d try gaming on Linux since I heard it got so much better. Holy shit has it gotten better! In the last 5ish months I’ve only found one game I couldn’t get to run and it was a demo. Starcraft 2, the new System Shock, pretty much everything I throw at it has been great. There’s never been a better time to not have a Windows partition!

Developer of GTA 5 mod that lets you chat to AI NPCs says it’s been removed by Take-Two (www.videogameschronicle.com)

However, in a new message posted on their YouTube channel, Bloc says Take-Two has taken down the mod from the Nexus Mods website, and has also had the YouTube video removed. Bloc then chose to remove the mod from the GTA5Mods website to avoid any more issues....

JTskulk,

If they took down your video, you can contest it if you’re sure you’re not breaking any rules or doing copyright infringement. I’m pretty sure showing someone’s software in a video isn’t copyright infringement.

JTskulk,

I’m sure parent is totally fine being subsidized by all the people not running it.

JTskulk,

You don’t lol. Beg Tim Apple for it.

Linux distro for gaming

I know this has probably been asked before but I am currently using Arch and wondering if my choice is the best for gaming. What are the thoughts from the community? I have an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with 64 gigs of RAM and a decent AMD GPU. Gaming seems to be okay on Arch but I am wondering if I’ve overlooked something better....

JTskulk,

Your setup sounds exactly like mine and I couldn’t be happier with AMD and Endeavor.

JTskulk,

Xavier: Renegade Angel It’s hilarious and moves fast, you’ll love it

JTskulk,

Open source means you can read the source, Free software means you can modify and redistribute.

JTskulk,

I remember reading the opposite back in the day, that this is why RMS dislikes the term “open source” and prefers “Free software” as more descriptive. Open source refers to software where you can read the source, but the license it’s under does not necessarily gaurantee freedom to the user.

JTskulk,

I’ll take your word for it :)

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

JTskulk,

I use the rss feeds, so much better.

JTskulk,

Why buy a bong when the Volcano exists?

JTskulk,

I have a lot more free time than I otherwise would.

JTskulk,

What brand were the phones? That makes a huge difference.

JTskulk,

I have a Pixel now, it’s pretty great. I used to manage Samsungs for work and I absolutely hated them. Samsung tries to replace as much Google stuff with their own crappy stuff. I’ve never touched a Motorola. I now manage iPhones for work so I see all the weird problems they can have too.

They both have their pros and cons.

How many people here have actually used XMPP?

With all the current discussion about the threat that Instagram Threads has on the Fediverse and that article about how Google Embrace Extend Extinguished XMPP, I was left very confused, since that was the first time I’ve heard that Gchat supported XMPP or what XMPP actually is, and I’ve had my personal Gmail since beta (no,...

JTskulk,

I used it back in the day before I could figure out how to use a mail server. I had shell scripts send me messages that way. I thought it was the coolest thing that I could receive instant messages while offline.

JTskulk,

We’ve seen British people on TV.

Do you use RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it is a simple, standardized content distribution method that can help you stay up-to-date with your favorite newscasts, blogs, websites, and social media channels. Instead of visiting sites to find new posts or subscribing to sites to receive notification of new posts, find the RSS...

JTskulk,

RSS is great! I use it for Slashdot, Youtube, some webcomics.
