Garden_Ramsay,

Every time I see Michael Caine in the news I have to watch this

Garden_Ramsay,

In my experience, everything else on thinkpads can and will be abused by my users but the trackpoint is one thing I’ve never had to replace. Most of my new hires don’t even know what it does.

Garden_Ramsay,
  • Suburban Sasquatch
  • chopping mall
  • She Came From The Woods
  • Army of Darkness
  • Carnosaur
  • Killer Clowns From Outer Space
  • Feeders
  • Hack-o-lantern
  • Hauntedween

Take your pick, some of these are actual movies, some pretend to be (looking at you Suburban Sasquatch). You’ll have some laughs regardless of the pick.

Garden_Ramsay,

Oh it’s fantastic, just wanted to throw in at least one reputable film

Garden_Ramsay,

If this is wrong I don’t wanna be right

Garden_Ramsay,

Or prune juice: a warrior’s drink

Garden_Ramsay,

Yeah dried plums. Idk why it suddenly becomes a new word, something French I think?

Garden_Ramsay,

I do the same thing and have tons of issues with how they’re making the game. That being said it’s far from vaporware. The experience is pretty jank at the moment but 2 years ago when I played a lot it was stable and you could sink a lot of hours into an actual gameplay experience, which is far from vaporware from my understanding. Theoretically you still can but I’m waiting to play until it’s more stable. It’s still alpha yeah but when it works it’s an actual game, albeit far from expectations and promises.

People should absolutely criticize the development but calling it fraud seems a stretch, they clearly have a product it’s just like 6 years away probably from being what they talked about 6 years ago lol. It seems more like mismanagement and development bloat. The insane backers notwithstanding. Even if they dump development now I had some fun times with $45 spent. It’s certainly an interesting experience to behold, I just think the hyperbole around the game can be ridiculous. My two cents.

Garden_Ramsay,

That’s a great observation about you hanging out around tractors as a kid and having that sense of awe. I had a similar thing as a kid with my grandpa working on semis and old cars. I really hope they do pull the game off despite my brain telling me this is all a house of cards. But exploring ships and space is so damn fun, this is the closest game to that. Tried all the X games and Elite and everything in between and SC, broke as it is, still has me holding out hope. At the very least if they never make it to a full release I hope someone else tries something similar. Starfield is fun but not scratching the same itch.

Garden_Ramsay,

I was thinking Barclay had his hand in this monstrosity

Garden_Ramsay,

When you frame it a certain way of course it sounds awful. Let me try the opposite.

Lae’zel has been indoctrinated since birth by a crazy religious and xenophobic culture. The second she’s told she’s being lied to she doesn’t believe anyone because people don’t change their mind about their entire belief system through one line of dialogue from a person she just met.

However after a few more hard facts being shown to her, such as said religious culture trying to kill her and being lied to by the head of said fanatics, she realizes all of her people are actually indoctrinated slaves and starts to fight for the future of her people by rallying around the one person who can actually do something to stop it all.

Not sure why her breaking away from the brainwashing and indoctrination and trying to help free her people after seeing the truth is a bad thing here? Also fun fact, if Orpheus turns into a mind flayer and dies at the end she goes to free her people anyway, it wasn’t just about him. She didn’t just become a zealot following a new person, she became dedicated to freeing her people. Orpheus has that capability so she wants to free him.

Garden_Ramsay,

That happened all the time in my smallish city sub I used to frequent. It was small enough crap like that would get banned quickly. You’d just find them stirring every hot topic pot you could find in every city sub for our state and also like 5 other states, just 24/7 “arguing” aka spouting talking points or hit and run posts. Then occasionally a random post in /r/mlb

[D4] PSA: Now is a perfect time to do the PVP objectives for the season journey (lemmy.world)

For those not aware, one of the objectives for the last part of the season 1 journey is to purify 10,000 Seeds of Hatred. There are also objectives to purify 1,000 and 5,000 in Chapter 4 and Champion (Chapter 6) respectively. If you don’t like PVP but still want to complete all the season journey objectives, now’s your...

Garden_Ramsay,

I was able to do it at 10am without seeing a single person. You don’t actually pvp, you just kill enemies and click a thing. I got like 4 levels and upgrades and mats and gold while doing it so it wasn’t a wasted 30 mins. You can turn off cross play to lower any possibility of running into people.

Garden_Ramsay,

I used to work at a credit union in IT. I can confirm financial institution laziness knows no bounds. Separate from their laziness is the vendor compatibility. I can’t count how many vendors do not update their software to run on modern browsers and relied on specific IE instances. Adding to all that is just the institution itself having decades old hardware and software because modernizing things can be incredibly expensive. The core my company used was incredibly outdated Unix and required a ton of different middleware just to make sure we were compliant where absolutely necessary. If it wasn’t necessary nothing got done. And that’s better than a lot of banks that could be running on some COBOL based core. Completely redoing the core will affect every middleware crap solution they’ve patchworked together to keep running over the past few decades and will be insanely resource, cost, and time intensive.

Even these days at my current company I run into this shit. Huntington bank requiring IE for check processing, or SAGE DB software requiring 2013 Access or else it won’t work. These are huge companies still utilizing outdated piles of garbage.

Garden_Ramsay,

I’m a little confused and not knowledgeable on this at all so I’m genuinely curious: if inflation goes crazy for years, like 8% for 4 years let’s say, why is there no concerted effort to drop it for a while, like -5% for 4 years, to “bring it back” to the 2% aimed for originally? If that makes sense. It seems like if inflation gets insane we’re all just stuck with it for the rest of time?

Garden_Ramsay,

I believe they forced him to step down because of his stubborn stance on EVs right?

Deleting my Reddit comments was a strange experience. (kbin.social)

It wasn't the fact that there was a limit to see 1000 comments but what they were. The vast majority of my 12 years on Reddit I spent talking about dungeon and dragons 5th edition (DnD 5e) which I started playing early in is lifestyle. It was my first role playing game and I got sucked into the Internet to learn more. Before my...

Garden_Ramsay,

I have to imagine a lot of this “I’m done with woke star trek” crap is perpetuated by bots and shills. Post histories on Reddit for accounts saying these right wing talking points were either days old in response to some new Trek show or episode, or years old accounts that haven’t posted in forever then suddenly posted a bunch of talking points in every thread they could find.

There were definitely legit accounts of people upset by new Trek for other reasons but far outnumbered by “anti wokester” puppet accounts. When it came to Twitter I wouldn’t bat a lash if one out of every hundred accounts were bots. After noticing their trends they get easier to spot. It’s the only thing that makes sense when the alternative is there are legions of trek fans that never noticed how progressive the shows were and suddenly decided to be angry in the past couple years.

Garden_Ramsay,

The Primaterre series by S.A. Tholin starting with Iron Truth was recommended to me to itch Mass Effect scratches and it quickly became my favorite new series. It starts more Doom/Warhammer than anything but evolves quickly over time. Namely I like the following things about both ME and Primaterre books:

  • choices of characters have consequences, good or bad. Setups and payoffs everywhere. Ramifications that benefit or make life more complicated for characters and factions
  • wild, urban, metropolis, etc. type planets that get explored for various reasons
  • characters have their own motivations, beliefs, styles etc. They all feel alive and unique, not star trek “all Klingons dress and act like this” if you know what I mean
  • fantastic villains that are unique and sometimes terrifying
  • memorable action scenes both in space and on ground, but also believable romances and friendships that evolve over time. Great characterization while maintaining amazing world building, as opposed to someonelike Reynolds who has good world building but paper thin characters
  • interesting aliens, although I can’t dive into this much without spoiling, I will say they’re not as eclectic, ubiquitous, or as integrated like Mass Effect but the aliens that are present are engaging, unique and used well
  • tight knit crew solving problems and investigating and dealing with politics

For something different, I just finished the currently released books by Linda Nagata in the Inverted Frontier series and they also scratched the Mass Effect itch but differently. The first book is almost like an anime? I’m not sure how to describe it, if you end up ever reading it let me know if you had the same vibe. But they’re very interesting, thoughtful and unique. Wild ideas, technology, culture. You follow a crew from the edge of human expansion after a collapse to see what became of their ancestors and former territories. Though my main complaint was that after 3 books I felt the author spent too much time on specific plots, which held up exploring “the frontier”, but I learned there are still 2 more books coming that I believe will dive more into this vast frontier referenced in the premise for the series. Either way they were exciting reads that I couldn’t put down even with how weird they can get.
