EliasChao,

Apple is the most profitable tech company in the world, they should be able to get more talent to allocate to work on both stability and new features, is not like they’re a small startup short on money.

EliasChao,

I would argue that iPadOS Safari and iOS Safari are not really that different though.

EliasChao,

I have many Apple devices across pretty much all of their categories, that doesn’t stop me from being very vocal when in disagree with them.

Being an Apple user, heck an Apple fan, doesn’t mean that you have to applaud every single thing the company does and never disagree.

EliasChao,

That’s what I mean, would you say iPadOS Safari and iOS Safari don’t share a good chunk of their codebase?

EliasChao,

I understand that recording Apple TV’s screen would be very certainly used for piracy; I was hoping that since the video feed is coming from the iPhone it shouldn’t be a problem though.

Thanks for your reply. I will look into getting a HDMI capture thing.

EliasChao,

I’m pretty sure those savings would apply only on pitch black interfaces on OLED screens, IPS panels do not use less energy by displaying black, unless is the only color on screen.

If a UI is dark grey (like the Nestle one in this post screenshot), all of the diodes on an OLED screen are lit up, so there shouldn’t be any savings whatsoever.

Also, we’re far from having dominance of OLED screens in the smartphone market, which would be required for your scenario to apply.

EliasChao,

Usually a newer phone would equal more future proofing, however its worth noting that iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have virtually the same SoC.

EliasChao,

Holy shit it works!!!

Thank you very much. I was really bummed out thinking the feature had been removed.

EliasChao,

See the other reply in the post. It’s possible to do the same on iOS 17.

EliasChao,

Fwiw, sticking with Lightning for so long made all the sense in the world from a business perspective.

Why would they willingly let go all the money they received from the MFi fees?

EliasChao,

To be fair, they said they’re ditching the leather products because of how much water they need to be produced compared to non-leather options.

EliasChao,

Your sacrifice is appreciated, mate.

EliasChao,

Funnily enough, I don’t think there are any visible Apple logos in the AirPods Max.

EliasChao,

Having more SKUs is harder and more expensive to maintain; they will sell the inclusion of USB-C as a way to unify their charger across their platforms and to add Thunderbolt to the Pro models.

EliasChao,

Or the jolly rancher guy.

EliasChao,

You’re saying there’s a 3rd party Lemmy client named “Not Poop 3D” being developed as we speak?

EliasChao,

To be fair, Elon doesn’t all have that money in cash. Also, like half of the Twitter buyout was made possible with a loan where he used his a Tesla stocks for like half of the operations as collateral.

Although I agree that he’s far from being broke, this can become a pretty bad financial decision to Elon.

EliasChao,

I believe it’s a matter of being in the same platform as controversial content.

In the end they’re paying Twitter to display their ads, and if Twitter allows questionable content to be in their platform, the companies are indirectly supporting it.

EliasChao,

I think the thing is that, in order to have a successful and reliable Tile network, you need as much people as possible to install the Tile app so their phones can communicate with their trackers.

Whereas with Find My, you have everybody’s Apple devices being part of the network without them doing anything, their devices just do it, without intervention from other users. That’s a massive advantage for Apple’s offering.

On similar note, if Google comes up with something similar where they can leverage all of the Android devices out there, it’d be an enormous network.

EliasChao,

More often than not you need to be very specific and have some knowledge on the stuff you ask it.

However, you can guide it to give you exactly what you want. I feel like knowing how to interact with GPT it’s becoming similar as being good at googling stuff.

EliasChao,

I actually think Zuck does want to kick Musk’s ass. At the same time I think Mark is going with it just to call Elon’s bluff.

EliasChao,

We all know it’s pronounced “gif”.

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has threatened to sue a group of independent researchers whose research documented an increase in hate speech on the site since it was purchased (apnews.com)

Twitter is threatening legal action against the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a nonprofit that researches hate speech and content moderation on social media platforms....

EliasChao,

I mean their site is twitter[.]com

EliasChao,

I’ve seen people on Mastodon referring to the company as The Company Previously Known as Twitter.

EliasChao,

r/videos is back up though. The protest ended up being for nothing.

EliasChao,

They’re back up. I just checked, there was a vote and they allow videos again.

EliasChao,

Yet every imaginable remix of the song is all over social media.

EliasChao,

WhatsApp also uses E2EE, wouldn’t also be targeted under this same legislation?

Meta pulling WhatsApp out of the UK would affect way more people.

EliasChao,

You can also seamlessly download videos on all of your devices, on top of their own music streaming service.

I’m sure you can get all of it for free somehow, but there’s a point in life that convenience is more important. Also, the family plan is dirt cheap if you consider all you get.

What's your favorite third-party app that integrates beautifully design-wise with your native iOS/Android apps?

I greatly respect when an app developer takes the care to design their app to follow their OS Human Interface Guidelines. Apps like Apollo (and wefwef/Voyager for Lemmy) for example rose to popularity partly due to looking and feeling like native iOS apps...

EliasChao,

Ivory from the Tweetbot devs, although is not purely Apple-y, it feels like it belongs in the platform while also adding something of their own.

EliasChao,

Thank you for this, I saw yesterday’s @Some_Emo_Chick’s post and thought it looked pretty good, but without your post I wouldn’t have even thought about actually preparing it myself.

EliasChao,

That’s what you get from being the most popular instance I guess.

EliasChao,

All in all, I would like to have a bit less circlejerk and start having more diverse content.

Don’t get me wrong, all the beans and old memes is helping a lot with keeping the platform alive and with constant activity, but I think at some point we need to start posting more stuff and make Lemmy more friendly and attractive to newcomers.

EliasChao,

Iirc, it’s been said that the reason for them to ditch CarPlay is so that they can add their own infotainment system where they can charge for subscriptions.

It’s not a technological problem, it’s a “we want to extract every penny out of our customers” problem.

EliasChao,

I would argue that because the iPhone is their most popular product, they will do it.

When they released the iPhone X back in 2017 at $999, people were outraged at the price increase for the average iPhone price, and yet we keep buying more expensive phones.

EliasChao,

Hadn’t thought about how many people will come back to see their RemindMes on Reddit only to find deleted comments from people that left Reddit nuking their comments.

EliasChao,

I don’t remember if the bot would work at all, but I was referring to all the people that used one of those tools to delete their comments or mass edit them to something like “this message has been edited because fuck u/spez” or something like that.

EliasChao,

A lot of people use social media to follow celebrities, brands, politicians, etc., and Mastodon doesn’t have that (yet at least).

I prefer Mastodon, my feed consists of the people I decided to follow, instead of an algorithmic one. But one have to accept that Mastodon lacks the kind of users that most people want to follow.

Hopefully, if Meta ends up delivering on their promise to add support for the Fediverse, I will be able to follow the kind of people that otherwise would’ve never joined Mastodon (ie brands that would offer support for their products), from my Mastodon client of choice.

I know a lot of people disagree with Meta joining the Fediverse, but I prefer to be optimistic about it. Also, Mastodon supports blocking domains at a user level, so if you really don’t want to interact with @threads.net users, you can do it yourself.

Worst case scenario, we get back to the current status quo, so there’s nothing to lose.

EliasChao,

I’m shocked, because in my country every dentist would recommend you to do it 3 times a day, so hearing there are people out there only doing it as much as twice a day, with quite some people doing just once a day, it’s very shocking for me.

I gotta admit though that more often than not I don’t do it the afternoon because I either forget, or don’t have time to do it. But I do it religiously every morning after breakfast, and every night before I sleep.

EliasChao,

It does a bit here though, in my country dentists recommend 3 times a day, not 2.

EliasChao,

Are you or your parents from a Latin American country? Trying to find a pattern here.

EliasChao,

I use Ivory for browsing Mastodon, and I’d bet that the app is more polished than any other first-party social media app.

The problem with Mastodon (and Lemmy to some extent) is that the onboarding process is not as straightforward, thus causing some friction for the less tech-savvy users.
