It’s almost as if reddit’s first party app couldn’t even compete with third party apps. I used Boost for Reddit and now I’m waiting for Boost for Lemmy...
Give it time to settle down. Mastodon vs. Pleroma vs. Misskey, and recently Akkoma vs. Calckey, etc etc etc. all of this stuff isn't really new. Use this. No use that.
Just use what you like. I prefer /kbin. Likely will always. If someone judges me for using a software they don't, then I probably didn't want to talk to them anyway.
Also keep in mind that /kbin was in very, very slow development for a very long time before a lot of things all happened at once. Very much a passion project. Like this is someone building a shed in their garage for their garden except somehow now suddenly 50 thousand people are in your garden and they all want in.
All I know is...I found a home here after leaving Reddit for good (as of yesterday my account is gone).
My initial move away was to Lemmy.world. But after finding some pretty glaring bugs including one that seemed to be a big security bug, I decided to delete my account there and try this out. I'm happy here. It's not perfect, but it's not broken as I found with my Lemmy experience.
I honestly don't care where people end up, so long as it's federated, open, and welcoming of everyone that have good intentions.
This is not true in most cases.
It's not about being profitable, it's about always making more and more and more and more - the so-called growth.
Let's take the case of reddit inc. Their revenue grew from just $25 million in 2016 to over $500 million in 2022. If they can't make a profit with that, I don't know what to say (I'd say the leadership buys a new ferrari every month, probably). According to this thread, reddit operating costs were around $35k dollars back in 2011. Even if you were to multiply that by a factor of 10, it's still just a couple million dollars per year. Multiply it by 100, and still They. Are. Fucking. Profitable. As. Fuck.
No, the problem is not profitability and paying the bills. Fuck no. The problem is them wanting more than what is remotely reasonable, and of u/spez being a greedy fucking pig and wanting not simply a big, but instead a spectacular cashout in their coming IPO. Well, fuck the greedy little pig boy and fuck reddit.

Meh… I’m not going to spend any of my time going to whatever that other website is to “protest.” I come to news aggregators to read news. That’s why I’m on kbin now instead of that other website that killed 3rd party apps.
I deleted my posts/comment history, resigned as a mod, and logged out for good. The best protest you can do is leave at this point. Anything short of private, restricted, or NSFW-abuse only serves to drive traffic for them and allows them to continue to serve ads.
The John Oliver idea was clever but should have stopped after he responded. It is now only driving traffic to the site and giving them classic “haha isn’t the internet funny?” free marketing on news outlets. They’ve even explicitly said in interviews they don’t mind it at all. That’s not a protest. No one is upset to see John Oliver memes on one sub and be in on the joke.
I was holding onto my account as well. That was until just a few minutes ago. I was browsing /r/all to see if there was any remaining discussion on the API shutting down. I only came across a couple of threads, all of which, to varying degrees, misrepresented what is going on. Comments making lite of the impact of 3rd party apps dying, and completely ignoring the fact that the owner of Reddit is acting with complete disrespect towards those who made the platform what it is today.
At that moment, I didn't give a shit about my account anymore. Are there bots astroturfing the comment section? Maybe. Are there users who are acting a little smug because they don't feel negatively impacted at all yet? Probably. Whatever. They can have whatever is left of the site.
I'm not going to stand for this. It feels like in life, there are so many bad things that happen that we have no control over. This is something I have 100% control over. It's so simple, just never go on Reddit again.
It was never about Reddit in the first place. It was just about hopping onto a forum and talking about games, current events, memes, comics, art, cats, etc. If /u/Spez and his ilk are going to be so disrespectful towards those who want to facilitate said forum, then I'll find another one immediately.
