Not really, two more countries just joined NATO, it would be perfectly normal that along with that comes the opening of additional military bases like the ones in Germany, UK, etc.
These are likely to be the troops that will be stationed there.

As a new user, I’m enjoying Mastodon’s vibe so far but the one thing that is a letdown is the trending hashtags. I’ve been checking them regularly over the past couple of weeks and it seems like they’re pretty much always like this....
I can imagine some alpha-cunt Tate-esque grifter selling courses on how to "Just Shout at People" like it's some sort of magic spell that mysteriously makes everything that you want happen.
Selling it like it's the hidden secret sauce to the universe or whatever, rather than just being a dick to everyone.
Would the community even be any worse, I wonder? :)
I wrote the first line of code for /kbin on January 14, 2021. Around this time, I started working remotely and decided that the time I used to spend commuting to the office would be devoted to /kbin. Throughout this entire period, /kbin has been a hobby project that I developed in my free time. It was also when Lemmy started...
Well, maybe I'm just not good at memes (almost certainly the case tbh) but Microsoft are talking about windows switching to being a largely cloud based OS, hence their Windows 365 talk recently.
Which is horrible, obviously.
Laughs in KDE could have been any distro, more about not having to deal with the eventual clusterfuck that's coming towards windows users...
There it is folks, someone had to explain their fucking meme. See that, that's what a shit meme looks like. :p
By not mentioning the Activity Pub protocol or FOSS (and then going off on GNU shit with direct quotes from Richard Stallman) even once, this is straining the bounds of possibility.
Comedian and author Sarah Silverman, as well as authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey — are suing OpenAI and Meta each in a US District Court over dual claims of copyright infringement.
OpenAI is called that for a reason. They absolutely were a non-profit research org initially, so would have been eligible for research grants, etc. They would probably have gotten a pass on using the torrents too, for the same reason.
They went to a private for-profit model later after they built their AI's and wanted to start selling them as a service. How the hell all of that plays out as the company they are now is anyone's guess.
It's great, isn't it? As a side bonus, the tutorial modules on system optimization commands are just great. Check how much less RAM and CPU footprint your system's using now that you've run the tutorials. It's almost like nothing's going on in the background at all.
This is the reason that BASH will always be better than Powershell, imho.
I read an interesting point which I hadn't realized before. Discussions on current social media are always current, not long term. You open the app or website to see what's going on now. When you comment, it's soon lost to history, buried by newer stuff. If you happen on a post more than a day or two old, it doesn't make sense...
There's a few users I've been keeping an eye on after seeing them post misinformation and hate speech. Just keeping a list for now because I don't know how to report them. Where should I go to do this?
Ok, I just reported you here on Kbin.social, not sure if it went through though as clicking the button didn't close the report box or anything, but that could just be a missing UI feature.
In some of the music communities I’m in the content creators are already telling their userbase to go follow them on threads. They’re all talking about some kind of beef between Elon and Mark and the possibility of a boxing match… Mark was right to call the people he’s leaching off of fucking idiots.
The turning point for me when I really got a concrete realisation about people absolutely not giving a shit about this was when Snowden came out and I saw the majority of people just go "Eh, that's pretty fucked, whatever", and then immediately jump straight back into scrolling facebook all day long.
I realised then that there probably wasn't any point expecting anything from them. I don't have much sympathy left for people in this regard anymore.
Most people legitimately don't give a shit about this issue. I think that they really should, but they absolutely don't for the most part.
Would make it a little like work email addresses too.
Say, if NYT had their own instance and disabled open sign-ups for user accounts, you could be certain that any account posting from that instance is a legit NYT account.
I'm fairly sure you don't get to axe most of your staff, refuse (illegally) to pay their severance packages and then sue another company because they hired your now, ex-employees, on the grounds that it's stealing from your company...
Everywhere I look there are people advocating for defederation from this and that! Do you even understand what you’re suggesting? Do you get what’s the point of decentralized social media and activity pub?...
It's not about disliking some community that someone personally disagrees with for whatever reason, it's about trying to not have the entire system taken down by a vastly powerful corporate entity with an almost endless track record of being consistently malignant.
We (meaning the whole fediverse, all instances) need to be de-federating that crap immediately.
Nothing good will come from having Facebook streaming into here in anyway whatsoever.
The Fediverse as a whole needs to be a separate place so that people can leave places like that.
Also, if Facebook is allowed to "work with" the development of the fediverse at all, they absolutely will eventually destroy it for profit. And "working with" it absolutely includes them federating with it.
When their vast resources are taken into account, and their existing userbase also, they would rapidly become the main instance (or collection of, but probably just one) of the whole fediverse. Once that's them, they can use that position to dictate terms pretty hard.
Before you know it, everyone that would eventually have come here are there instead, and they're now the fediverse. They can also fork the software and leverage their Dev teams to make their fediverse vastly more polished... No donations needed on their fediverse, less bugs, everyone you know is already over there... Seem familiar?
How does that effect us who aren't there, how isn't it just the same thing as now? Our fediverse dies off because the users leave, instances close down through lack of population/need, before you know it there's nobody here and the idea just dies.
If this were just some problematic instance (or a group of them, even) I'd entirely agree with you, but this is Facebook, the damage that they're almost certainly planning and are entirely capable of requires (at least in my opinion), a different solution.
Please note that I'm suggesting this as an entirely unusual solution to a very unusual problem. Not as some sort of standard practice.
Has anybody considered the idea that boosts from non-Meta properties to Threads could legally be used to build ad profiles? We already know they do that sort of account association with non-fedi accounts....
Yeah but in this particular case it really needs to happen at the instance level rather then the user level, and preferably all instances at that. It's about mitigating the damage that Meta/Facebook are going to do (to the entire fediverse as a system) more than it is about not seeing shitty low-effort racism or whatever they'll have there.
If I could actually trust Meta to be benign then I'd maybe agree with you about just blocking their shit as a user, but there's just no chance of believing that about them.
It's still not at all the game that they originally sold people pre-release though. If you go into it thinking that you're going to be getting an action looter-shooter with some interesting mechanics and great visuals then you'll get pretty much what you're expecting.
Going into it buying CDPR's line about it being the "next generation of open-world gaming" and "Evolution of RPG's" or whatever crap they were spewing, will leave a sour taste in your mouth.
The main campaign and side-mission storylines are just flat-out great though.
CDPR have always been good at doing the storytelling side of things, and that didn't really change with Cyberpunk.
Total fraud on release though, especially on console. Fuck them for what they did there.
For transparency, I'm referring to how it is currently on PC, where you also get mods if you want them. I couldn't comment on the console experience as I haven't played it.
Definitely wait for a sale though if you do one day go for it, I don't think it's good enough for the full price. Too many things are still lacking, although the upcomming DLC may fix that (which still means paying extra to fix the shit that should have been in the base game since release... Yeah).
where Spez edited comments to make the sub seem to be inciting violence, so he had an excuse to ban it
Not what happened. Spez, fuckwit though he is, actually managed to do a halfway decent trolling there.
A bunch of t_d people were slagging him off and insulting him in their comments. Spez got drunk as shit one night and edited their comments, swapping his name with Trump's so that it made them look like a bunch of anti-trumpers. Much gnashing of teeth ensued.
Absolutely shouldn't have done it, especially as CEO of Reddit FFS, but definitely funny as shit.
Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely a mark against him, but he didn't get them banned. They thouroughly got themselves banned on their own.
Having a blast playing #X4Foundations. I haven’t played a game quite like it. Comparisons to #EliteDangerous doesn’t paint a complete picture; it more like a cross of ED with a bit of #Stellaris. Last night I was completing a mission while one of my other AI-controller ships completed another unrelated mission! All while my mining ship was making me passive income. I am thrilled.
Yeah, X4 is probably the best out of all of the X-series games so far. But they've pretty much all been awesome that way. The series certainly has its own unique gaming style, for sure.
There aren't many games where you can legitimately play it as an arcade spaceship shooter, and just as legitimately play it as a 4X economics/war strategy game and never even leave the map screen for 50 hours at a time whilst conquering whole quadrants of the galaxy.
Or you can make a warband and pretty much go Mount and Blade (In SPAAAAAAAACE!). Likewise, going pure pacifist and just doing space-trucker stuff is also a perfectly legit playstyle too, as is turning it into a corporate management sim, etc, etc, etc...
Really fantastically simulated and open-ended series of games.
We've also got a fediverse community for X4 over on Kbin.social now too (although it's still young). It's over at https://Kbin.social/m/X4Foundations if you're interested.
