If you're doing a peer-to-peer (P2P) related activity, port forwarding is very important for improving speed or enabling the service at all. That's because your router blocks incoming traffic from certain ports by default, ports that are used for a P2P connection. To get around this, you can 'forward' the specific port that is used for the P2P activity you're using, letting your router know that the traffic you expect to see from a specific port is good to let through.

You can simply leave port forwarding to your personal router, but if you want to stay anonymous while participating in P2P connections, then you'll want to use a VPN service. If a VPN service doesn't utilize port forwarding, then any P2P connections you use will either be straight up impossible, or very slow over the VPN. The P2P service you're attempting to use needs to access a specific port on the VPN's router, which needs forwarding to work properly. For example, you wanted to host a gaming server without giving away your actual IP address, then a VPN with port forwarding is desirable. The same can be said for torrenting.

TL;DR: VPNS with port forwarding matter if you want to stay anonymous while using P2P services.

Specifically, it's any peer-to-peer (P2P) connections that utilize a port that's not open by default on your router. P2P connections that need forwarding are used in services like PC gaming (usually in older titles or some indie games), VoIP, torrenting, etc.

I never even suggested we let them do whatever we want.

That doesn’t mean we provoke them into using their nukes.

Using that logic they can do whatever they want, as long as they back up their 'want' with nukes.

I think there are things we should never let them do, even under threat of nukes. Muscovy needs hard red lines, else they'd just annex everything. Got to call their nuke bluff from time to time.

I kinda get it. I get interrupted by so much random bullshit during the work week, focusing on projects is hard. Much easier to browse social media at work, respond to email, get out occasionally to do chores, etc. Some light productivity, but deeper concentration is hard.

Friday is usually my go-to project day. People tend to leave me alone enough so I can actually dig in. I'm content with my current situation so I don't feel a need to work on weekends, but I can totally see how that might be more enjoyable. Not working the entire weekend, just a few hours on Saturday morning where no one will fucking bother me. Could probably get so much more shit done in way less time.

I don't think so. Maybe I'm misunderstood, but the "I use Arch" meme was meming on the fact that using Arch was a flex, like it's harder to get into, and you're a true blooded Linux user if you're using Arch.

Whereas, Pop_OS is kind of the opposite. I'm fairly new to Linux (been using a Linux system as my daily driver for about a year), and Pop_OS was recommended as a beginner-friendly distro. Plus, it worked well with Nvidia cards with minimal effort. So maybe it seems like a lot of people are using Pop_OS and are bringing it up, because there are a lot of newer Linux users.

Sick of hearing about record heat? Scientists say those numbers paint the story of a warming world: With a summer of extreme weather records dominating the news, meteorologists and scientists say records like these give a glimpse of the big picture: a warming planet caused by climate change. https://phys.org/news/2023-07-sick-scientists-story-world.html

Helldiver_M,
@Helldiver_M@kbin.social avatar

@Mane25 Sure, here's the Annual global land-ocean temperature index. And the Annual Ocean heat average tempatures. Really, just go to town. Any Annual averaged data category gives some cause for alarm. Sea levels, CO2 levels, Methane levels, etc.

The climate records that are being broken regionally are a direct consequence of the trends shown above. If you read the article @readbeanicecream was kind enough to share, then you would have read that. "Records go back to the late 19th century, and we can see that there has been a decade-on-decade increase in temperatures," said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, keeper of the agency's climate records."

So no, I don't think this is sensationalist or misleading at all. You just need to dig past the headline a little bit. A headline that accurately reflects what scientists are saying is a direct consequence of the general trend that's going to continue to get worse and break more records into the future.

Anyone else gradually stopped drinking alcohol?

I stopped drinking alcohol some years ago. Before that I hardly consumed any alcohol at all for many years, but in my college years and maybe some years after that, I drank socially like “everybody else”. But I gradually kind of got tired of dealing with the bad feelings (physical and emotional), so I drank less and less....

Helldiver_M,
@Helldiver_M@kbin.social avatar

Pretty sure I'm genetically predisposed to have a large desire to drink. Both sides of my family have alcoholics. There are a few specific social circumstances where I'm okay drinking a limited amount, but I cannot keep any alcohol in my house. There's no such thing as keeping a 6-pack in the fridge for any length of time.

I have not found this to be the case. There are only a few podcasts I felt I enjoyed enough to financially support, and I stopped donations because I still had to sit through ads. I don't like feeling as if I'm being monetized twice.

Helldiver_M,
@Helldiver_M@kbin.social avatar

Never played pikmin 3, but I had a funny experience with the day limit in pikmin 1. You have way more than enough time to complete the game in the day limit, even if you play very suboptimally.

Despite that, in my initial playthrough I still hated it for all the reasons you listed. Theoretically, I could see how a day-limit could be good for the game. Adding tension and the like. But on that first playthrough when I had no idea how much time is worth, I always felt the need to rush. As it turned out, I could have easily taken a few days to just explore or strategize. But there's no way to know that at the start. Maybe it could work better if the game could communicate somehow if you're ahead of schedule or something.

Its been brought to my attention on a previous thread that if you're attaching images to comments on Kbin, Lemmy users cannot see them.

I still very much dislike imgur though, so I wouldn't suggest that as a solution. But embedding images into hyperlinks seems to be the best way to ensure your comment containing an image is viewed correctly by the wider fediverse.

That's not how I understood defederation. If an instance defederates from you, that instance stops seeing stuff from your instance. But not necessarily the other way around, as defederation is a one-way action.

So if the Cow instance defederates from the Poopie instance, people from the Poopie instance can still see content and comments from Cow users. But Cow users cannot see content or comments from Poopie users. For the scenario you're describing to take place, the Poopie instance would also need to defederate from the Cow instance.

That said, it's still not quite shadowbanning. The admins of the defederated Poopie instance would be aware that Cows were not seeing their content. It would depend on the admins to inform the Poopie users that they've been defederated. If the users were not aware of the defederation, then it'd effectively be a shadowban.

Edit: Hi Lemmy users! You can't see the screenshots I've attached to this comment. I've just learned this thanks to @B1naryShad0w. If you'd like to see my comments with the screenshots, please view this comment thread via kbin by clicking this link.

(1/2)

I've looked at a few examples, and I'm just super confused now. I've also tried searching for a simple explanation of what exactly defederation does, and I keep seeing conflicting descriptions.

Let's look at two examples (please bear with me as I only know how to attach one image to one comment at a time.) On this comment let's look at AskLemmy, a lemmy.world community, from Beehaw:

Notice that all threads (with one exception) were posted almost a month ago when defederation happened. That one exception was a Beehaw user who posted to AskLemmy 5 days ago. So we can see that BeeHaw, having defederated from lemmy.world, is blocking 100% of new content from this lemmy.world community, except for that one thread published by a Beehaw user who seems to be out of the loop 5 days ago.

Mostly makes sense to me so far. Beehaw defedearted from lemmy.world, so Beehaw can't see new stuff from this lemmy.world community. A little weird that there was a new post by a Beehaw user, but that still makes some sense with my previous understanding of how defederation worked, since I think(?) defederation is one-way. After all, if defederation was two-way, then how did a Beehaw user make a thread on lemmy.world?

Helldiver_M, (edited )
@Helldiver_M@kbin.social avatar

(2/2)

Now lets look at Beehaw's technology community from lemmy.world:

On the one hand, this is not blocking 100% of the content from this community, which seems consistent with what I originally thought. Lemmy.world is not defederated with beehaw, so lemmy.world can see new content from Beehaw's communities.

But on the other hand, there is a ton of content missing. And it's not just federated content taking awhile to move from instance to instance, as I'm seeing posts from the last 24 hrs from Kbin that are not showing up on lemmy.world. So it appears that there is content that's being blocked from getting to lemmy.world. But it's not 100% of the content that's being blocked?

To make matters more confusing, I can see content published by Beehaw users on a Beehaw community from lemmy.world. Wtf is going on.

Helldiver_M, (edited )
@Helldiver_M@kbin.social avatar

Thanks for calling that out. It looks like attaching images directly to a comment only works for kbin instances. This is what it looks like from kbin.social. I just tried viewing this thread from lemmy.world and the images were not showing up.

To be honest, I don't want to go through the effort of editing my comments to correct it right now. But in the future I'll go back to hosting images and linking them in my comments, so anyone from any instance can see them. That's a shame, because attaching images to comments in Kbin is super convenient. Oh well! Thanks again for letting me know.
