DieguiTux8623,

I don’t agree with the original post (I am an Italian Catholic and I assure you that nothing big is going to change as a result from the synod, neither in doctrine nor in more organizational/practical aspects). We already have a de facto schism with Catholics from northern Europe about same-sex unions and other topics. Maybe this division will spread and more progressive countries will be allowed to do so, especially if the revenue coming from those parishes is high for Rome. So maybe yes a schism (or rather a “per county” differentiation) is likely in case some change is disturbing for the most orthodox.

DieguiTux8623,

catholic != christianEvery catholic is a christian, not every christian is a catholic. The title was about US catholics.

DieguiTux8623,

Wait, what… we aren’t even done with Vatican Council 2! 🤣

DieguiTux8623,

Italian here 🍝 don’t care too much about what they think about their or our pasta, given the current inflation rates we must be glad we still have something to eat.

What baffles me is that “Italian pasta” is called “włoski makaron” and that they call Italy “Włochy”. It has something to do with Italian immigrants having had long/uncurated hair in the past, someone explained me, and I find it slightly insulting 🤣 but also funny at the same time.

DieguiTux8623,

Interesting article… the name for Germans (Niemiecki) reminds me of the Romanian word “Nemți” with the same meaning, they must be cognates. Polish is a really fascinating language.

DieguiTux8623,

I didn’t know it and you are absolutely right! Like in ancient Greek “βάρβαρος” (barbarian) which was used to design people who couldn’t speak properly and were just babbling.

DieguiTux8623,

This comment will surely age as milk, but… this government is going to last at least until 2027. What comes next will depend on how “well” they operate (so… questionable).

DieguiTux8623,

I tend to remember even after years the critical parts (even variable, function and class names) or have an idea of “what to put my fingers on” if anything needs to be changed or fixed. But sometimes fixing subtle bugs is like solving a rebus.

DieguiTux8623,

The only chart where Italy clearly outperforms neighbouring countries! 🍕 A side note for any European who wants to feel superior: the Italian minister of infrastructures has declared recently, speaking about a deadly bus accident which had strongly shocked public opinion, that the vehicle being electric can not be ruled out as a cause for the event, implying that endothermic engines are still preferable (source).

DieguiTux8623,

Yes, agreeable (I would not have used those words though, the real danger is not in this minister nor in his party). But why do you think they were elected in the first place and why is their consensus soaring day after day? Are people just “dumb”? Misinformation? Distrust of more moderate parties who did nothing to prevent the current crisis? This is a place for discussion.

DieguiTux8623,

Offering simple solutions to complex problems, especially if those “total solutions” can not be verified because their goal is unreachable has its point as an explanation. Scapegoating too, since it gives the illusion of freedom from responsibility (it’s cheaper to blame immigrants/LGBT rather than assume one’s own responsibilities e.g. for climate disaster). But to me there’s more: in Italy we passed from a radical left populism (M5S) to radical right populism (Lega/FdI) with the pandemic in between. Shouldn’t people realize that simple solutions do not work?

DieguiTux8623,

Yes, only that this time there is no future ahead… not many will survive the crisis and the quality of life for those who will is going to be close of the “good ol’ times” when we lived in caves.

DieguiTux8623,

(irony): if nobody ever thinks about future tax payers and slaves forced to work for minimum wages (in the “rich” countries that even have minimum wages) how are we expecting western society to sustain itself? This is horrible and reveals how we are treated as captive animals by our “shepherds”.

DieguiTux8623,

Yes we are getting there, no worries…

DieguiTux8623,

I’m not from the US and will probably never understand US politics, but wouldn’t Democrats be on the side of working class and the most needing parts of the population? The democratic party has been ruling for the past 3 years and from 2008 to 2016 (basically just a 3 year interruption in the last 15 years) so why are we facing now a situation of social inequality and those who work for a living (as opposed to non-productive classes) are struggling the most?

DieguiTux8623,

Thank you, clearer now. My bias was due to my being European, since here democrats are a radically different thing.

DieguiTux8623,

I really don’t understand the reason of such a bitter and disrespectful response to a politely posed question. Shouldn’t leftists be more tolerant than their right wing counterpart? Or maybe people are starting to be so ill-tempered just because they are systematically losing all elections in Europe and US?

DieguiTux8623,

The tolerance paradox applies to a purely theoretical situation, not to modern society where people have constitutional rights. All radicalisms are equally flawed and, personally, I prefer to deal with the “originals” rather than with spoiled youngsters who are pathetically trying to emulate the “tough” adults.

DieguiTux8623,

No,I don’t want them. But they are there, though…

DieguiTux8623,

No, but if the police can’t do enough, I install an alarm and defend my personal space. I don’t want to arrest all potential thieves beforehand because they have “thievous” opinions. I don’t want to argue online, anyway: your nested comment (with a parent that has gone down the list due to pagination) made me found a bug in a Lemmy client that I’m developing so I am really grateful to you 😂 Thanks 🙏

DieguiTux8623,

Admitting one’s own mistake is a sign of intelligence.

DieguiTux8623,

You’re sure you know it all and have an answer for everything. Good for you, go ahead like this in life and you will succeed.

DieguiTux8623,

Critical thinking implies the ability to understand other people’s point of view, learn from your own and other’s mistakes, discern what if good and what is bad in the other person’s reasoning and in one’s own. Not believing like a bigot that since it’s written in the Bible or in any other book it is a form of revealed truth.

"We must put a stop to further degradation that is leading Poland towards authoritarianism:" Nobel laureate urges Polish opposition to commit to progressive causes (www.theguardian.com)

"We as citizens will need to be assured that a new government would have faith in democracy, Europeanism and freedom guaranteed by law,” Olga Tokarczuk’s says two weeks before Poland goes to the polls in a potentially pivotal election on 15 October....

DieguiTux8623,

To me, 30% of voters does not at all seem a “minority”. This is democracy, the majority decides and elects their leaders, it does not matter if not everybody feels at ease with them. Traditional values represent a country’s identity, historical legacy and in the case of Poland, it is what allowed them to survive across multiple foreign invasions and dominations.

DieguiTux8623,

Not that simple. Who decides that abortion can be legal and murder can not? Doesn’t murder ban “violate” the freedom of those who are inclined to commit it?

DieguiTux8623,

Unless the system has only 2 parties like US, with three or more parties involved having a consensus of 30% makes quite a relevant share.

DieguiTux8623,

How can an opinion harm specific group liberties? It’s just an opinion against another opinion in the worst case.

DieguiTux8623,

We should accept that the wind is changing, he has been democratically elected. People are tired to spend money in a war (fought by and for foreigners) which in their idea is making the economy collapse by subtracting assets where they could have been spent locally. It’s a simplification, it’s wrong (partly or totally, depends on one’s opinion) but it is credible and it works as a slogan. Especially when the only communication strategy of the counterpart it’s “we’re right and you are an sh–hole, shame on you f–ing retrograde moron”.

DieguiTux8623,

In Italy, the Fratelli d’Italia (FdI) party is perfectly legitimate despite the constitution banning the PNF party from being created again. Despite FdI having roots in the MSI (Italian social movement), having a fascist symbol in their logo and some of the politicians participating in far right manifestations and declared Mussolini was a good leader, it’s complicated to define what fascist, neofascist and post-fascist is. They have traits of fascism but also not, e.g. this time they are allied with US and not against them.

DieguiTux8623,

Agree, there won’t be any crash due to financial reasons. But in certain parts of the world it will become very difficult to keep living due to the climate and those areas will have their value decreased. I am from the South of Europe and here in some cities (even historically densely populated ones) the heat is unbearable for a quarter of the year or more.

DieguiTux8623,

Until a couple of years ago right wing politicians were crying about “politicized courts” whenever magistrates tried to raise objections about the policies they were pursuing or the illicit actions they had done. After governing for one year with little to no judicial impediment (sentenced people are just moved to less visible power seats, e.g. Augusta Montaruli who passed from undersecretary to media vigilance after being found guilty of embezzlement) they now feel omnipotent.

DieguiTux8623,

And why don’t we add an “S” for straight in order to not exclude anyone? After removing the letters we remain with LBS which doesn’t sound bad, it looks like a household brand…

DieguiTux8623,

I known I am always complaining about Italy 🇮🇹 but one of the first thing Meloni’s government did was pursue and arrest active anarchic groups, under the accusation of terrorism.

DieguiTux8623,

No, he has said nothing about China or Russia. (Self?) criticism is a sign of maturity and wit. Being a western and adhere to western values doesn’t imply assuming justifying it all. In the west we do not have total freedom of speech and/or pluralism of information and, yes, there are worrying “new” forms of slavery.

DieguiTux8623,

If fuel prices are artificially lowered in a country, it will be an advantage for local companies to the detriment of competitors based in other countries. I wonder how the EU can allow such a form of protectionism. Oh, silly me, I just forgot EU == France 🤣

DieguiTux8623,

That’s how politicians from all parties always justify not doing anything to defend local industries.

DieguiTux8623,

You’re right, young people nowadays are always complaining and do not know the meaning of sacrifice, resilience and endurance. They should be grateful for what they were given and should have been wise enough to leverage it in order to achieve an even better living than their parents who didn’t have the chance to even get proper education…

DieguiTux8623,

vows by France and Germany to rebuff migrants who arrive by sea on Italian shores, and in defiance of European Union asylum system rules, head northward to try to find jobs or relatives in those and other northern countries

This is EU: united to share benefits, when catastrophes happen each one is left on its own. Afterwards, they wonder why there are so many eurosceptics. When Italy collapses (because it certainly will) they’ll be ready to buy everything low cost.

DieguiTux8623,

Quick! Build walls around Italy and establish guard posts demanding visa/passports to all living beings trying to cross the border in order to stop immigration…

DieguiTux8623,

“Pisică” sounds a lot like “pussycat” and is the generic term but in specific it can refer to female specimens, while males are “pisoi” (“tomcat”). I’m not Romanian though, so more knowledgeable people please correct me.

DieguiTux8623,

I wonder what the other 13 ones look like… The star is really impressive! 🔝

DieguiTux8623,

The EU was formed explicitly to prevent new wars from happening in the continent. At this point we should reconsider this and admit something has gone terribly wrong. We just elected a whole new set of greedy beurocrats and politicians…

DieguiTux8623,

Nonetheless we are directly experiencing an economy of war and “military law”-like measures like reintroduction of conscription, extremely patriotistic news, war industry on the surge. Plus a rising of neonazi and neofascist movements. Seems to me that all these “let’s collaborate and respect each other” went completely neglected.
