I don’t agree with the original post (I am an Italian Catholic and I assure you that nothing big is going to change as a result from the synod, neither in doctrine nor in more organizational/practical aspects). We already have a de facto schism with Catholics from northern Europe about same-sex unions and other topics. Maybe this division will spread and more progressive countries will be allowed to do so, especially if the revenue coming from those parishes is high for Rome. So maybe yes a schism (or rather a “per county” differentiation) is likely in case some change is disturbing for the most orthodox.
