Why is there so much hate against children here?

It was the same on Reddit, people openly say disturbing things against children. What prompted me to post this is someone saying that babies should be put in overhead bins inside airplanes. Even if they’re joking, this is a disgusting thing to say. I won’t say that about anything else....

@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

I genuinely haven’t seen any of this personally.

Is it possible that you’re just subscribed to bottom of the barrel dipshit meme communities?

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what it is. I’m looking at your history and it’s basically all meme communities.

Shit in, shit out.

If a person disagrees with an unpopular opinion, then they should upvote it

The person sharing their unpopular opinion is doing exactly what’s expected of them, so why downvote it when you agree that’s it’s an unpopular opinion? An upvote would be you agreeing that it’s an unpopular opinion. Downvoting it means you’re either an A-hole or you disagree that it’s an unpopular opinion....

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

That’s how it should work, but I don’t think people here get it. I’m seeing a lot of very upvoted relatively normal opinions.

Why so many people get triggered about ads nowadays?

Wherever I go, I often see the sentiment “This website has ads, so it’s trash” pop up in conversations. And honestly I don’t quite get why. 90% of the internet has always had ads, you just scroll past them and mind your business. At least they’re personalized now so you can pick a topic you like instead of diapers and...

they’re trying to use exposure to trick you into buying their particular product instead of someone else’s identical product.

That’s probably the case for a lot of products, but I don’t agree with your generalization that advertising offers nothing to the consumer and is presumably a drain on the economy.

I run a small business and see noticeable returns on advertising dollars spent vs not advertising. I run a services business and advertising makes it easier for clients to find us and makes me more money that I put back into the economy by buying lavish things like food and rent. I hate advertising and wish I didn’t have to pay Google or use social media to promote our “brand”, but the truth is I do in order to stay competitive.

The advertising I’m buying isn’t tricking or spamming anybody, it’s targeted to people that are looking for that kind of service in my area and it doesn’t misrepresent our work in any way. What it does do is get my foot through the door and increases the likelihood of them reaching out to us over the schmucks down the street that offer a similar service, but are not as good as us in terms of value, customer service and quality of work. There’s value in that for the consumer.

Good to know that I wasn’t going crazy. I knew Xfire was familiar and wasn’t sure if I was confusing it with Xlink Kai.

Man…

And you can make a career out of lying to your dipshit audience for over 20 years while selling sketchy supplements, gold coins and silver and make survivors and relatives of children and teachers murdered in a mass school shooting a fucking nightmare.

Shout out to Knowledge Fight.

In songs sung in English, a word ending with "t" followed by "you" sometimes makes the "you" sound like "chew". Does this happen in other languages with different words/sounds?

For example, if a lyric contains “that you”, it ends up like “thatchoo”. One example of this I can think of is in Karma by Taylor Swift (I know, I know, but it’s one of the most popular songs I listen to). The line where she sings “Karma’s a relaxing thought/Aren’t you envious that for you it’s not?” sounds...

That was a great watch, thank you.

Cars are awesome.

Driving is the most comfortable, convenient, and fun mode of transportation. Walking and biking can be OK but only for traveling relatively short distances in good weather. Mass transit is inherently unpleasant. No matter how nice you try to make it (and most mass transit systems aren’t nice) the fact of the matter is that...

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know how unpopular this is, but this is something that I never hear from the “FUCK CARS” dweebs. Accessible, affordable transit and not needing to rely on cars would be sick, but I also love being able to sit in basically a room on wheels in a comfortable chair that I have set up exactly to my liking with air conditioning or heat blowing right at my face and balls and I love not having to sit next to or smell or having to hear a stranger right next to me. It’s great.

Yeah traffic fucking blows but it still beats having to wait for a bus or a train outside when it’s 90F or snowing out and it beats being shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of sweaty stinking apes.

Am I crazy but is using a domain typically used by any government a really stupid idea in the first place?

I get that it was free or cheap, but come on, nobody saw this coming?

Does not having any social media presence have any negative impact on a person's social life?

Social media presence as in having accounts in your name with you being visible in the profile picture in mainstream sites (Anything Meta, Twitter, Snapchat, Tiktok…). I don’t consider anynounmous accounts on Lemmy, Reddit, Kbin relevant to the scope of this question.

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

I think this is more common than some people realize. I haven’t used FB for well over a decade, but I know that despite people claiming that it’s dead amongst millenials and the younger generation, a ton of people still occasionally use it to stay in touch with some people and a ton of clubs, towns, businesses, etc still use it as the main hub for communication and FB marketplace is huge in some regions. Hell buying a used motorcycle was a little tricky without it, but luckily Craigslist is still going strong where I am.

I personally don’t care, but it would be foolish for me to say that I’m not missing local events and news by not using FB.

How do I go back to being myself?

Ever since LemmyWorld went down in the hacking, I haven’t been able to log in using the account I created there. I do the login thing, and the little pop-up says “Logged In” but I’m not. I can’t see my Subscribed feed, I can’t comment or post. And I couldn’t ask this question! I also couldn’t start fresh because...

It’s a platform and instance that was created and is maintained by volunteers. It’s also very new, recently saw a huge increase in users and is now targeted by bad actors.

You’re not forced to pay for it, you’re not served advertising, you don’t get a worse experience if you don’t donate.

You need to have reasonable expectations, especially when most of these issues can be fixed by clearing your browser’s cache and trying again. It’s crazy any of this shit works well enough in the first place.

Russian speaker here, seems like a typo or translation error. Can’t think of why this would happen, but I don’t think cum plays any part in this.

Interesting etymology though, the Italian scaramuccia (joker/jester/clown) seems pretty plausible.

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

Huh, that seems plausible, but it’s usually between other Latin words. I can’t think of any where “cum” would be interjected between English words. Are there other examples, is this a thing?

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

Fair enough. Thank you.

Make sure you’re using flux and don’t be precious about it. Flux it the fuck up. They sell non-corrosive flux that you don’t really have to clean up, but still not a terrible idea to clean it off when you’re done. They also have some handy flux pens instead of the typical goo in a jar.

Try not to inhale the vapors, even with the lead free solders. Shit ain’t good for you either way.

Clean and tin the tip and work quick.

BettyWhiteInHD,
@BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on the type of solder you have, some melt fine at 350, some need a little bit extra, I think lead free melt at higher temps. Play around with the solder you have, it’s pretty cheap and you can clean it off.

You usually can’t just fuck your friend and stay only friends for long. Catching feels is a real thing.

Pho isn't that great

I’ve had pho from maybe over a dozen different Vietnamese places here in the states and have gone to a bunch of peoples’ favorite pho joint because every time I mention that I don’t love pho to somebody, they insist that I just haven’t had good pho and we usually go to their favorite joint and I’ve always been a little...
