Atarian,

I didn’t know what I was doing so I chose at random.

Atarian,

I don’t care about boot time. I switch her on and then go and grab a coffee, by the time I’m done she’s finished booting.

Atarian,

I’m a good old fashioned NAP following libertarian/anarchist.

I don’t really care about the left or right paradigm - what I care about is how badly you and your cronies are going to buttfuck us.

Atarian,

Holy shit that took me far too long to get.

Help: I'm dealing with hundreds of ripe plums

Last fall I moved into an apartment with a plum tree in the front yard. I don't know anything about plants or trees or fruit, and now that summer is here there are hundreds of plums dangling off this tree. They're attracting millions of ants, as well as raccoons, possums, rats, and a few bold humans who I've caught plucking from...

Atarian,

Make lots of plum wine. I shit you not, it’s delicious.

And so is damson wine by the way.

Linux for the Airheaded Layman?

I have tried to learn Linux for ages, and have experimented with installing Arch and Ubuntu. Usually something goes wrong when I try to set up a desktop environment after installing Arch in VirtualBox. KDE gave me a problem where I couldn't log in after getting to the point where my username was displayed in a similar format to...

Atarian,

I was one once too, many years ago.

Run various distros in a VM, learn, play, break stuff. Learn to ask questions in a way that gets responses from gurus. Try stuff.

When you’re ready, install it on the metal.

Be prepared to break something. Don’t get disheartened. Lots of people run Linux, and all of them were noobs at the start.

You can do it.

Atarian,

Friends don’t let friends use Red Shat.

Atarian,

Ms Pac Man obviously

Atarian,

Good question.

You just destroyed my childhood by the way

Atarian,

Why you do dis lol

Atarian,

I’ll take that on for you, brave warrior. It’s the least Ican do.

BSD users, under what condition would you recommend BSDs?

So I’m about to get a new laptop (likely 13th gen intel) since my current one is breaking down. Currently I run Arch Linux on my device and is looking into FreeBSD or OpenBSD as the OS. Mainly because once I tried to look into the Linux kernel and can’t believe the amount of spaghetti in it. I’ve read a little bit of Free...

Atarian,

I use it for desktops and servers. It’s rock solid, small (compared to Linux) and performant.

I wouldn’t use it if you like to run windows games or software, and sometimes hardware support can be sketchy. I’ve been lucky.

Try it out.

Atarian,

I run about an equal number of Slackware and FreeBSD boxen.

Atarian,

Australia here - we drink water straight from the tap, but I picked up the habit of drinking boiled water from my frequent trips to Shanghai.

Atarian,

Do they drink it straight out of the barrel, or sterilized in some way?

Atarian,

You just triggered my PTSD

Atarian,

/r/fountainpens

I’ll see myself out.

Atarian,

Phew! Not just me then

Atarian,

I fucking love you

All programs should tell you where they store config files (utcc.utoronto.ca)

I wholeheartedly agree with this blog post. I believe someone on here yesterday was asking about config file locations and setting them manually. This is in the same vein. I can't tell you how many times a command line method for discovering the location of a config file would have saved me 30 minutes of googling.

Atarian,

It puts it’s Configs in /etc/ or it gets the hose again.
