sometimes dragonfruit plants get The Rot. it spreads & liquifies the plant. pic 1 shows a pretty bad case of rot.

i've seen different suggestions for fixing it, but the one that seems to work is to scoop out all the rot w/your bare hand.

i did that, washed it with soap/water (like a wound) & it dried up within a day. (see pic 2.)

i'll monitor this section for more rot. if it repeats, i might split this section off.

the same area after i scooped all the rot out with my hand, cleaned it with soap, & let it dry. to the left of the scooped-out area, you can see an area that was previously similarly scooped out. it healed perfectly. no more rot there.

#dragonfruit is a remarkable plant. it's a cactus that likes to climb & then hang down. it grows air roots to grasp whatever it's climbing.

you can break off segments & plant them. full sun is fine. it does very well in tropical dry places.

it has an amazing ability to recover from wounds or rot. it can even live with little scabbed-over holes in its flesh, like the hole seen below.

i love their giant flowers & tasty fruit. <3 dragonfruit!

Melothria pendula, creeping cucumber

It’s related to the cucamelon (M scabra) and is also a perennial. Pictured fruits are ripe. When they turn darker green they are no longer edible and when they are black, are stinky and work like ipecac.

Please let me know if you want seeds to this when I pass out native edible seeds this fall. More in AltText.

@plants

A finger holding up a very tiny cucumber. It is round and looks a little bit like a watermelon. the little melon is smaller than the fingertip. Behind it is a wooden fence. The creeping cucumber tastes exactly like a cucumber, small and crunchy. It does not store well and needs to be eaten within hours of being picked or it starts to get squishy. I’ve tried salt-drying them, and they shrivel to nothing like a little shriveled dot. I’ve also tried pickling them, and it’s not really worth the trouble since they are very small. Honestly, they are best just eaten raw.
Four tiny cucumbers in a wooden basket next to two native physalis husks to the right and pink okra to the left and an orange madhatter pepper to the far left.
A bunny sitting in front of a fence. Behind it is a wall of chicken wire and heavier fencing. Small, delicate vines climb up the wire and they look a little bit like ivy, but the leaves are light green, and the vine itself is not woody, rather, it is thin, soft and breaks easily. The vines die back in winter and come up again in the late spring. The older the vine is the earlier it will fruit. If you start from seed in the spring, the vines won’t fruit until September, but for an established vine, it might start fruiting in late July. It is hardy to zone 8, possibly 7. It doesn’t transplant well and doesn’t like to have its roots tampered with. It is possible to grow in a pot and overwintered in a garage. It is a short-lived perennial. I don’t know how long it lives but probably not many years. The tuber is flexible and thin and the vines don’t get very long even on established plants. Needs a lot of sun. It fruits prolifically but the fruits are very tiny.

Looking towards next season, I need some recommendations for seed supplier. I used to buy mine at Wilko's, but they're closing, so where would you recommend I switch to?

#Chia forest

Will they every bloom, I wonder. Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook says that Salvia hispanica is a “short-day flowering plant”, which will not happen here in Denmark until 3+ weeks from now, and meanwhile the temperatures are dropping. The plants are over 1 m tall at this point, so I'd rather not take the pot inside.

Anyway, a couple of bush crickets have been enjoying the forest for a good while now, so that's a reward in itself.

@gardening do I need to harvest my winter now that they (some delicatas) seem ripe, or should I leave them on the vine until frost?

When rat tail radish cross-pollinates with watermelon radish, this is what it happens.

So much for seed saving. :blobcatnotlike:

Look what I found on the pavement outside my house. It looks like an elephant hawk moth. I watched it for a while & it didn't seem to like what was growing there, so I moved it into my garden. Checked later on the web & it says they like willow herb, which is in the garden. Have a good life, big guy. #gardening @gardening

Yep, definitely that time of the year! A lot of this is going to be given away. It is far too much for a 2 person household. 😁. These are the tomatoes that are left after using 5 pounds to make a batch of sauce.

I've picked, roasted, and frozen the last of the cherry tomatoes. They got blight, thanks to the terrible weather, but they did OK. These tomatoes are ripening now in the small greenhouse. They're from seeds saved last year from shop-bought tomatoes and have done very well. 🌱

My shows that we are heading towards Autumn here in zone 5. The large sedums are just starting to bloom and the Solomon's Seal and Solomon's Plume have berries. The "Plume" berries aren't totally ripe yet.

I only have names for 2 of the sedums. The lower right corner is Mr. Goodbud (still in its pot and waiting to be planted) and just above it is Back In Black.

Current state of the driveway vegetable garden. In the back, cherry tomatoes covering the 2-meter-high fence, corn that’s so close!, lots of peppers (serrano, jalapeño, najareno, Poblano, and ají amarillo), and a few other odds and ends.

#gardening @gardening

Photo of two potted pepper plants: on the left, a Poblano, and on the right, a serrano, both with lots of nearly mature fruit.
Close-up photo of the most mature cob in my corn “patch.” The silk has started turning yellow and dry, so it’s very close to ready for harvest.

This started as 3 plug size plants this spring. It's clearly something we are going to have to keep watching so that it doesn't take over. It is just starting to come into bloom. The flowers are just starting and should be more impressive soon.

Morning glory Grandpa Otts: this electric beauty surprises me every morning as its trumpets open at different places on the vine. I managed to keep the slugs off (garlic spray!) when they were babies, so now about a dozen plants are climbing through the August garden. Each flower opens for just one day. But what a day.

The morning glory on ivy combo is gonna work so well: the rather young morning glory in a pot near an ivy covered wall has already climbed to nearly 2 m. Come springtime, and I will sow most of my morning glory seeds under the ivy. 😍
