Small communities that are similar should think about mushing together for activity. Example: Hiking, Backpacking, Thru Hiking. It will generate more Activity and then branch out. We have too many niche pages that won’t be active.
@scrubbles Kbin now has an automated process so if a community owner has been absent for a month, another person can just take over, and either revive it or delete it. Abandoned communities are also listed as abandoned. Would be really good if Lemmy could have something similar!
!movies started great and has over 4,000 subscribers, but suffered from an absent mod for a long time. Recently I made myself its owner and am slowly bringing it back to life.
That's why I was a little bemused at first when @Blaze (who I somehow mistook for a bot!) started crossposting all our new posts, but I actually don't think it's a problem. Interestingly, I've checked the list of upvoters for those crossposted articles across the two communities and it's not the same people in each. And only 21 people from my instance subscribe to moviesandtv.
I think it's good for mods to have these conversations. As the fediverse develops and discovery gets better (e.g. publicly shareable multi-feeds) things will start to grow or disappear organically and different communities will have different rules and flavours.
To take the example of movies again, already !movies has a somewhat different flavour than !moviesandtv which includes television.
Fragmentation can be cleaned up, but I also think decentralization is one of the important strengths of the fediverse, and we should be patient with small communities.
You are welcome! We should probably decide which community to keep at some point, it might be more interesting than crossposting everything both sides ha ha. Would you like to help us mod !moviesandtv ?
@Blaze thanks for the invite, that's an interesting idea - but I don't know if federation currently allows us to cross-moderate between Lemmy and Kbin yet?
We should probably decide which community to keep at some point
https://lemm.ee/c/moviesandtv is obviously the bigger/main community on the threadiverse so definitely it needs to be kept!!!
Also everyone already migrated here once after the old instance shut.
Kbin is a relatively small instance, but I'm still committed to helping it maintain some basic communities because I think it's an important aspect as it grows. So I'm thinking for now, keep little !movies going too, maybe lean into theory/art/history type stuff over there a bit more.
Back when I was on reddit I used to enjoy both the big movies sub and the much smaller ones like flicks and truefilm, and now that Kbin has multi-communities that seems promising in terms of access.
I’m noticing an influx of Reddit users today, maybe revolving around their weird bug they had today. I know this question pops up semi regularly, but for those just getting their foot in the door maybe we can help show them what else is out here on the Fediverse to help them get started....
!moviesandtv is a pretty great community if you’re into movies and tv. It’s where a lot of the regulars from [email protected] went after the lemmy.film instance was shut down.
Sorry to hear. !casualconversation tries to be more laid-back conversation. We are also trying to get !moviesandtv going after losing the previous community. Movies hopefully are not as polarised as other topics
i think its better to start with a join movies&tv comm, you probably want to grow it fast and managing two new comms may get to confusing/tiring for the mods, plus it will be the mods the main posters there until it gets big enough
Interesting, you have a point! I guess we could start with a common community, but named “[email protected]” and allowing both movies and tv content.
Having it names like this makes it future proof for when we’ll probably eventually split and have [email protected]. If we go with “[email protected]”, when we’ll reach the point where we need to split, that might make things confusing.
it a good idea to have it on an instance that its federated to most big intances so lemme and lemmy.ml are good choices, with lemee being a bit better because of lax moderation and i think making comms there is easier
I saw ur request to take over !movies still hasn’t been answered so I set up !moviesandtv so we don’t have to go without a community any longer. If you’re interested in moderating just let me know!
Do you think Lemmy is hurt by having too many dead/low-PPM communities?
Title is a bit of a loaded question but I tried to fit it into one sentence....
Do you have a favorite filmmaker or movie that's not widely recognized in mainstream cinema?
Similar small Lemmy communities need to merge to survive.
Small communities that are similar should think about mushing together for activity. Example: Hiking, Backpacking, Thru Hiking. It will generate more Activity and then branch out. We have too many niche pages that won’t be active.

What are your favorite non-tech communities?
What Lemmy communities would you like to share that we may not know about?

Comic Books - Under New Management! (lemmy.world)
The Comic Books group has existed for a few months now with an inactive mod....
What existing organizations should start hosting fediverse instances? Which ones are already doing so?
TLDR: This is a long post, so a shorter question you can respond to is:...
[Meta] !Europe pour discuter de l'actualité européenne en français French
Oui oui, encore une communauté, dispersion du contenu, etc....
