Jesus Christ… I used to joke about “you know, it’s only a matter of time before some asshole Israeli starts talking about a ‘final solution’ to ‘the Palestinian problem.’” But here we are…

Far better than Heathcliff Minus Heathcliff which was just the Garfield gag knock off.

It is playable on Steam Deck… install Windows on a USB-C SSD. Problem solved.

Steam does the update thing too, nobody is immune from that.

I wanted to see how Destiny 2 ran on it. Bought one of these in 2tb.

kingston.com/…/xs2000-portable-usb-c-solid-state-…

No issues. Windows installed flawlessly, booted into Windows, Destiny 2 imstalled flawlessly.

Some stuff just requires Windows, it’s best not to be all precious about it.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Windows updates don’t do that either, you have a choice when to install them, delay them, or just not do them.

…microsoft.com/…/manage-updates-in-windows-643e9e…

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not going to get in a certification dick measuring contest. Yes, you can in fact delay installation, and yes, you can schedule installation.

But really, an actual sysadmin knows you run a management tool for Windows updates:

Reminds me of the “NO PLATE” story.

Which is… apparently TRUE? O_O

Interesting that Excel sees =6/2(1+2) as an invalid formula and will not calculate it (at least on mobile). =6/2*(1+2) returns 9 because it’s executing the division and multiplication left to right (6/2=3*3=9).

Google Sheets (mobile) does’t like it either and returns an error. =6/2*(1+2) also returns “9”.

Is this the same game that was accused of faking the gameplay video or was that something else?

Are agile scrums an outdated idea?

Here's a video on YouTube making the case for why agile was an innovative methodology when it was first introduced 20 years ago.

However, he argues these days, daily scrums are a waste of time, and many organisations would be better off automating their reporting processes, giving teams more autonomy, and letting people get on with their work:

https://youtu.be/KJ5u_Kui1sU?si=M_VLET7v0wCP4gHq

A few of my thoughts.

First, it's worth noting that many organisations that claim to be "agile" aren't, and many that claim to use agile processes don't.

Just as a refresher, here's the key values and principles from the agile manifesto: http://agilemanifesto.org/

  1. Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  2. Working software over comprehensive documentation
  3. Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  4. Responding to change over following a plan
  • Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.
  • Welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile processes harness change for the customer's competitive advantage.
  • Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale.
  • Business people and developers must work together daily throughout the project.
  • Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done.
  • The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
  • Working software is the primary measure of progress.
  • Agile processes promote sustainable development. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely.
  • Continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility.
  • Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount of work not done--is essential.
  • The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.
  • At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.

Your workplace isn't agile if your team is micromanaged from above; if you have a kanban board filled with planning, documentation, and reporting tasks; if your organisation is driven by processes and procedures; if you don't have autonomous cross-functional teams.

Yet in many "agile" organisations, I've noticed that the basic principles of agile are ignored, and what you have is micromanagement through scrums and kanban boards.

And especially outside software development teams, agile tends to just be a hollow buzzword. (I once met a manager at a conference who talked up how agile his business was, and didn't believe me when I said agile was originally a software development methodology — one he revealed he wasn't following the principles of.)

Let’s say you have a team of 12 engineers, and each engineer makes $160,000 a year.

That’s $76.92 an hour.

Taking 12 people offline for a 1 hour meeting means that meeting is costing you $923.08. * 5 days a week = 4,615.38. * 52 weeks a year = $240,000.

You’re burning a quarter of a million every year just having meetings. Also likely, these aren’t the only meetings they’re in.

How much money are you spending preventing work from being done?

We used to have a daily stand up first thing in the morning before anyone had even had coffee for gods sake. “So what’s everyone working on?” Fuck if I know, I haven’t even read my email yet.

jordanlund,

Just got out… It makes an interesting bookend with Spirited Away, lost parents, a journey through the spirit world, an interesting mix of both Western and Eastern archetypes.

+1 - will watch again!

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The big reason isn’t the OLED, it’s the battery use. So if you aren’t currently having battery problems, I’d hold and wait for the next iteration.

When Destiny started, Bungie was tied to Activision and whenever there were design decisions people hated, they blamed Activision for them.

Then Destiny 2 launched, Bungie was able to buy out the Activision contract, and everything went to shit.

Turned out, Activision had been the voice of reason the whole time.

Bungie started eliminating story missions, vaulting content people had paid for, including a full 1/2 of the base game and multiple expansions. They sunset gears and weapons people spent hundreds of hours earning and curating because they claimed they didn’t know how to develop scenarios for them any more.

A full Sony takeover would be a huge improvement over what Bungie has done since separating from Activision.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

You and me both. I dropped the game cold when they vaulted the content. It was clear Bungie did not respect my time or my money.

Since then I saved $230… and it will be more since I won’t be buying Bungie content going forward.

Beyond Light - $50
Witch Queen - $80
Lightfall - $100

The trailer was garbage. It looked like a 1980s tv show.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

True story, just before my open heart surgery, I had the top two surgeons arguing over who was going to do it. LOL. I’m like “guys, guys, I’m sure you’re both great, I’m just the guy on the table… flip a coin, do rock paper scissors…”

I have 2 Samsung HDR televisions and I’ll never buy another one. The image is dark, muddy and unwatchable in HDR. The only fix is disabling it on all connected devices.

I was thinking the same thing, polar opposite of everything that made Fury Road attractive.

Gamestop gift card, or a gift card for another large gaming retailer like Target/Walmart/Best Buy.

Visa gift cards can be used at any retailer, but yeah, I’m not sure how that works for online stores like Xbox/PSN/Steam.

I should say too… SOME games are platform specific. So if they’re asking for the new Zelda game, that’s ONLY on the Switch. Makes it easier.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

FIFA and Madden have both been made for EVERYTHING, so, yeah, no easy way to run that down.

Go for a $140 gift card because new games are often hitting $70 each.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Business lawsuits aren’t “technology”.

Also, while I give them credit for saying “Ex-Twitter” - I’d love it if “Xitter” took off, pronounced “Shitter”.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I guess the problem is looking at your picture on my LCD smart phone. :)

I can tell the machine on the left is the OLED version because the screen is just a touch bigger.

[DISCUSSION] What director(s) do you think have the best filmography?

I was checking out the new season of Fargo, which made me want to rewatch the 1996 movie and I got to thinking, the Coen Brothers have a fantastic filmography. They have way more hits than misses and they make some of the most interesting movies out there. No Country for Old Men is probably one of my favorites of all time. So...

jordanlund, (edited )
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I own a BUNCH of movies, but there are only a few creators where I feel obligated to a) own ALL their movies and b) group them together as a block.

Coen Brothers
Kevin Smith
Quentin Tarantino
Wes Anderson
The Marx Brothers
Baz Luhrmann

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I would need to see a photo, but it’s not possible to burn in a screen in one day.

iPhone 15 runs an OLED screen.

OLED’s CAN get burn in, but it generally takes running a device 24x7 for months.

Apple statement here:

support.apple.com/en-us/HT208191

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

How’s the new one?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I was expecting a straight list. This is the movie equivalent of an online recipe that has to start with the chef’s life story first…

If I had to list out the stuff that made an impression on me, it’s an absurdly high count of Harrison Ford:

Star Wars
Empire
Jedi
Raiders
Temple of Doom
Last Crusade
Blade Runner
Witness
After Hours
Brazil
Buckaroo Banzai
Big Trouble in Little China
Ghostbusters
Silverado
Star Trek II
Star Trek IV

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t get it. :(

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I… guess it’s funny if you know Uno?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

He should be good in the role, but Jesus Christ do we need Lex Luthor AGAIN?

Supes has a deeper rogues gallery than Lex and Zod. Brainiac? Metallo? Parasite? Toyman? Bizarro? Mr. Mxyzptlk? Anyone?

Superman - Lex Luthor
Superman 2 - Zod / Lex Luthor
Superman 3 - Computer Science
Superman 4 - Lex Luthor / Nuclear Man
Superman Returns - Lex Luthor
Man of Steel - Zod
Batman v Superman - Lex Luthor / Batman / Doomsday
Justice League - Lex Luthor / Steppenwolf / Darkseid

young voters say social media to blame for divisions in the u.s (thehill.com)

A Quinnipiac University poll asked U.S. registered voters to select one of four options to blame for the divisions in the country. Overall, 35 percent blamed social media, 32 percent blamed political leaders, 28 percent blamed cable news channels and only 1 percent blamed other countries.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Social media exposed the divisions, it didn’t cause them.
