this fucking sucks. i am very disappointed that the protests lost steam and everything is just back to normal, swept under the rug. they showed their hand, acted like fucking dictators, and everyone is just like "welp thats it!" and gives the fuck up. it's just sad. it feels like 90% of the people who said they were in this were all just being performative.
so many of us dedicated a lot of time to the protests, left our communities, migrated, all for everyone to just go crawling back. i won't go back. i am staying on kbin. but man, it fucking sucks to see reddit face 0 consequences because Spez was right, "this will blow over"
software has a very standardized version numbering system actually. It’s not required (eg dwarf fortress), but a lot of programmers like to use it. 0.18.1-RC.1 is actually super useful for version tracking. Friendliness is actually not the goal at all, it’s to be completely unambiguous about the stages of development.
The 0 is the major version number. Usually it reaches 1 when it’s reached a certain milestone or a change intentionally breaks compatibility with 0
.18 is the minor version number. This increases when a big patch comes through. Sometimes this can break compatibility, but there’s no real standard to decide between major and minor versions. In general, the major and minor version numbers are the only important ones for users.
The .1 is called a point version. It’s meant to indicate minor patches to the minor version. There’s almost never a risk for compatibility to break, and generally it’s unnecessary to update for a new point version.
RC.1 is very uncommon for users to know about. It stands for ‘Release Candidate’, so since it’s attached to 0.18.1 that means that the version is about to be released. It also means that the version is in active development and not ready to be released yet. Every time there’s a new RC, that means there was a bug that caused major issues.
This is actually possible. Not yet though. IQ only measures how smart you are compared to other people. If everyone took the same IQ test and there would be around 13 billion people then there would be like one or two people with negative IQ. The bell curve onto which you are sorted is never zero, so you just need so many people n that the integral from negative infinity to 0 is at least 1/n.
I have some drives of various sizes, 1TB, 2TB etc. I am currently working with a 2 TB drive. I place it in a powered external USB-3 drive enclosure. Piracy, in today’s context of unauthorized sharing of digital content, is wrongly condemned as immoral theft. However, it is not piracy itself that is immoral. Red Hat used to be one of the champions of FOSS. The last years, after being acquired by IBM, they bought and castrated CentOS and now restrict public access to “their” code....
That’s it. No more 0% interest loans. Social media companies focused on users over profit. They can’t do that anymore. And it’s likely something similar with RedHat.
I don’t care at all about the bubbles. I don’t use iMessage at all, 0.
Convenience. Most things “just work”. No need to customize or fiddle with things.
Price. Hear me out :D I used Android phones in the past (a mix of mid-ranges and flagships) and over time it ended being more expensive than using an iPhone.
Ecosystem. My mac laptops, watch, earphones, phone etc. all work together in useful ways. It sounds gimmicky but most of the time it’s not.
Apple watch. There simply isn’t anything that is close to it.
How everything feels cohesive and designed with the bigger picture in mind. Especially in the first party apps, you mostly know how things will behave.
Feels more “polished”. I always felt like I’m using something that is designed by an engineer when using Android.

I like how quickly a non-project can spiral out of hand. I have a Packard Bell 386 here with a dying hard drive. So I get my roommate to buy me an IDE drive, but it turns out it's also dying and I have to back up a bunch of files off it. so I get a CF to IDE adapter, but then it turns out it needs a 3.5" floppy power adapter, and I don't have one on hand. so I build a cable, then it turns out I can't easily mount the CF card in the hard drive slot, because it's bottom-mounted, not side-mounted

I think there is a fundamental difference between a tool like the kernel and a protocol which is then implemented by others. Google is part of those who standardizes the web, and it killed any browser competition exactly because it pushed so much stuff, that if you start a browser from 0 today, you will need millions and years to work with most websites.
The Linux kernel instead is one, centralized and that gets distributed, and Linus and other maintainers are gatekeepers as well.
I honestly think there is simply no way to avoid a complete takeover when there is this much asymmetry. Or well, the way is to keep things separated, maybe.
I mean if I am not paying either way me ingesting that content or not makes 0 difference to the producer. It is the same logic as throwing excess food to the trash so homeless can’t eat it.
@stappern The math is simple. We know through analytics that we have 25% more active copies than we had sales.
So, based on what I said previously we're missing out anywhere between 0% and 25% of revenue. Since the truth often lies somewhere in the middle, I argue that we lose some money. But we will never know how much it actually is, or how much impact piracy actually has.
One thing is for sure: If absolutely everyone would pirate the game, I would loose my job and couldn't pay rent anymore.
Thanks for the hints, this definitely helped, however it did not solve the issue.
What i did:
I changed via omv-firstaid the omv port from 80 to 8081.
I confirmed with ss -ltn that this change was successful and i see the listening port 80 vanished, while this now popped up:
State Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address:Port Peer Address:Port
LISTEN 0 511 0.0.0.0:8081 0.0.0.0:*
I tested locally via ssh from the pi the connection via curl http://mylocalip:8081/ and it works, i get the html back
I tested from my laptop (connected to my router via WiFi, where the raspberry is meshed into via the repeater in between) and i still get the timeout.
I tried tunneling again via ssh ssh -L 8081:localhost:8081 [email protected] and i did not get any errors this time. However when i open the local url in the browser i get a connection reset and my terminal shows me channel 3: open failed: administratively prohibited: open failed. However this just says that TcPForwarding is disabled, which is fine, so that tunneling issue should not be the main problem, i assume.

Non-techy guy here. I read an infograohic and made an account. 0 issues whatsoever. And the infographic was just to help me understand how it works. You don’t really need to understand lemmy to interact with it
As others have said, the story skips are kinda awful.
Plus, I gotta say that it doesn’t really make a difference. They don’t give anyone an advantage over anyone else and don’t impact the way you experience the game at all. If you don’t like them, just don’t buy them.
At worst, you’ll run into some guys who are really bad because they skipped a huge portion of the game to get to modern content. But it doesn’t give them any edge over you by any means.
Again, I can’t stress enough how these affect other players 0%.
