I’ll go first, I took my mom’s college textbooks which came with discs for a couple distros and failed to install RHEL before managing to get Fedora Core 4 working. The first desktop environment I used was KDE and despite trying out a few others over the years I always come back to plasma. Due to being like 12, I wanted to...
94 my uni used HP-ux work stations. So many of us set up Linux on a home machine. Slackware at the time. I was forced to dual boot through most of my uni time. As many needed programs just did not have viable candidates on linux. But by 2000 I found windows annoying and rarely needed to use it. Was likely about 2005 before I stopped installing windows all together. But even now. I have a cheap mini PC with win 11. It is used rarely. But photography and ham radio being my main hobbies. I find many Chinese products have 0 linux option for upgrading firmware or some other configuration option. So keep a mini pc just for that.
This text shows the network interface config for a device. Ip is 1.2.3.7 in the subnet 1.2.3.4/30
IPs are 32-bit numbers that represent the addresses, machines in a network use to communicate. Each IP is part of a network. A subnet is a defined subset of a network and represented by a number of 0-32 showing the number of bits at the end, that can be altered.
For example your home network is probably in the subnet of 192.168.0.0/16
This means that your IP starts with 192.168 and the 16 shows the size of the subnet. IPs in that subnet are 192.168.0.0 all the way to 192.168.255.255.
All devices in this subnet are local. You could also make smaller subnets inside this one to structure you local network or (and that is why companies use this) to allow devices in the same network to connect to each other or to disallow devices in different subnets.
To do this, a gateway is brought into the network. Its purpose is to connect multiple networks. At home your router can do this but in a company there probably is a dedicated firewall-machine.
The gateway also needs an IP. So in this “joke” the server is in the net starting with 1.2.3.4 and only the last 2 bits can be changed. So the IPs are 1.2.3.4 to 1.2.3.7.
The first IP (1.2.3.4) is reserved for the network, the last is broadcasting (1.2.3.7)and we also need a gateway (1.2.3.5) so we only have one IP left (1.2.3.6) so this device is really “secure”…
A Firewall could do the same and a lot of other things as well, but some companies are weird and networking is hard™.
“Standards for the exact length of an inch have varied in the past, but since the adoption of the international yard during the 1950s and 1960s the inch has been based on the metric system and defined as exactly 25.4 mm.”
Imperial units are dumb. We, in the US, would be much better off if we just bit the bullet. I am sure if an effort were made, however, it would become another insane political squawk point about American superiority.
Except Celsius, both scales are arbitrary (and no, there is no advantage to freezing and boiling point of water being 0 and 100).
The only temperature scale that isn’t arbitrary is Kelvin, because it has an actual absolute zero. So 0 in Farenheit is freezing point of water and salt solution, which does have scientific application. What difference does it make? The compression of the Celsius scale forces you to use decimal points for any kind of reasonable daily use which sucks. I am not saying Fahrenheit is better, I am saying neither is better. They are both arbitrary. It doesn’t matter which one you prefer, it’s just what you are used to. The other metric units are objectively superior and given to greater precision.
Write me a comment thread of two redditors arguing between the merits of using Celsius or Fahrenheit for their respective user
Response:
Redditor1: I can’t believe people still use Fahrenheit! Celsius is so much better and easier to understand. It’s based on the freezing and boiling points of water, which makes logical sense. Who needs Fahrenheit anyway?
Redditor2: Are you kidding me? Fahrenheit is way more practical! It provides a finer level of temperature precision and is better suited for everyday weather measurements. Celsius is just too limited with its smaller scale.
Redditor1: Precision? That’s just unnecessary! Celsius provides a clear understanding of temperature without the need for arbitrary reference points. The fact that water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C makes it intuitive and widely adopted worldwide. Plus, it’s used in scientific research and international standards.
Redditor2: Sure, Celsius might be more widely used internationally, but that doesn’t automatically make it superior. Fahrenheit has its advantages, especially when it comes to weather forecasting. The Fahrenheit scale allows for a more nuanced representation of temperature differences, which can be crucial when determining how hot or cold it actually feels.
Redditor1: But why complicate things with a scale that relies on arbitrary points like the freezing and boiling of brine solution and the human body temperature? Celsius is based on a fundamental and universal aspect of nature: water. It makes conversions between units easier and eliminates the need for mental calculations.
Redditor2: I understand your point about simplicity, but Fahrenheit offers a wider range of temperature values for everyday temperatures. It allows us to have more precise differentiations in weather forecasts, which is important for people who need accurate information for planning their day. Besides, those who grew up using Fahrenheit find it easier to relate to temperatures on that scale.
Redditor1: Well, I think the scientific community would disagree with you on that. Celsius is the standard in scientific research, and it’s taught in schools worldwide. It’s consistent, logical, and eliminates the need for multiple temperature scales. It’s time for Fahrenheit to step aside and let Celsius take over.
Redditor2: Scientific research is just one aspect of temperature measurement. Fahrenheit has its place in everyday life, especially in countries that have been using it for generations. It’s not about letting one scale take over the other; it’s about recognizing the benefits and practicality of both. People should have the freedom to choose what they’re most comfortable with, whether it’s Celsius or Fahrenheit.
Redditor1: Fair enough, personal preference does play a role, and people should have the freedom to choose. However, from a global perspective, Celsius provides a more standardized and universal approach to temperature measurement. It’s easier for international communication and understanding, which is increasingly important in our interconnected world.
Redditor2: I can respect your viewpoint on standardization, but let’s not forget that there are countries and regions where Fahrenheit is deeply ingrained in their culture and everyday life. It’s not just about personal preference; it’s about respecting diversity and different historical contexts. Both Celsius and Fahrenheit have their merits, and it’s up to individuals and communities to decide which one suits them best.
Yeah, I agree, it’s a human scale made by humans for humans. 100°F will be hot for me whether I’m on Earth or Mars, but 0°C/100°C is only the freezing/boiling point of water on Earth.
I think the optimal solution is to use Kelvin for scientific purposes and Fahrenheit for everyday use, but that’s just the American speaking in me.
I’d really like to be able to root/install lineage OS on my Motorola g73, but it seems it needs custom software written for it to have a custom ROM, or even TWRP, which I need to install Magisk. I could also patch the boot image, but that isn’t distributed by reputable sources for my phone, and my phone would already need to...
Would Shizuku be an option for you? That’s privilege elevation similar to root but you don’t need to unlock the bootloader for it. Pro is definitely that banking apps and OTA will still work afterwards. Cons are it’s a bit finicky and apps written for root still won’t work if they don’t explicitly work with Shizuku, too (some of them do). You’ll also be able to uninstall apps for user 0 which aren’t uninstallable otherwise (like gboard on G72, when I had one).
The linked video of Real Engineering has some major factual errors and omissions. I made a comment where I mentioned some in a neutral tone together with sources. He deleted it, which does not leave a good impression on me.
Here some examples:
The CO₂ per kWh is given as 42 for France. It should be around 100. The number Real Engineering uses is likely from RTE France, however they estimate as follows “For energy sources that are not mentioned [including nuclear], their contribution to CO2 emissions is considered equal to 0 t CO2 eq / MWh”. But there are significant CO₂ Emissions from Nuclear which are generated by the high amount of building materials needed for safety and operational costs. Currently estimated to be around 66g CO₂ per kWh .
It is mentioned that Germany imports energy from France, leaving the impression this is a one way dependency because Germany shut down its nuclear power. In reality the grid is interconnected and energy is constantly moved across borders in both directions. In fact if you look at the numbers France actually imports more from Germany then it exports to it!
Since you only need to run a single command as a user open terminal and give command ‘crontab -e’. If you haven’t set an editor it’ll ask for one, pick nano.
The syntax for crontab is like this (man 5 crontab will show it on your system as well):
<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">field allowed values
</span><span style="color:#323232;">----- --------------
</span><span style="color:#323232;">minute 0–59
</span><span style="color:#323232;">hour 0–23
</span><span style="color:#323232;">day of month 1–31
</span><span style="color:#323232;">month 1–12 (or names, see below)
</span><span style="color:#323232;">day of week 0–7 (0 or 7 is Sun, or use names)
</span><span style="color:#323232;">command to run with full path
</span>
I’m not sure if sct is really at that path and I don’t have that installed, so verify that first (run ‘which sct’). Save the file and exit editor (ctrl+o, ctrl+x on nano). That’s it. However, I don’t quarantee results with that, since X with environment variables and all may cause issues, but if that’s the case I’m sure this community can help with that as well.
this will append the current date/time once a minute (*/1) to a file in your home dir. You can check if it works with cat ~/date.log
If that works, then try again with your command. I see you used the full path to it, that’s a good thing. Also, what does that command do if you run it manually?
To run the command at 10 PM every day, you should have it like this:
There's 0 real economists who hold anything close to these views. What a stupid take. Before you downvote, I ask that you find a single source that contradicts my claim. Since all liberal economics is like that, it should be easy, right?
you have to do zero real work to get profits that way. The profits you are getting are just a share of the wealth the workers of the company produce. There is no such thing as passive income, the money is always taken from working people. The really rich people take 0 risk. The instant they start making serious losses banks and goverments step in and give them taxpayers money.
Also: to get relevant income that way you already need to have a lot of money, which you either get by inheritance or exploiting others. Either way you had to do zero real work yourself. (and no, just shoving capital around is not real work)
Were you not alive during the 2008 global financial meltdown? Where the entire world had to subsidize the 1% because the banks they own sold garbage mortgages?
What about more recently with the bank runs that we had a month or so ago? The fed implented a new “insurance warranty” to make banks whole again “without using tax payer funds” but we both know that’s a load of bullshit…
Now we have this never ending inflation, interest rates only going up for who knows how long… Literally siphoning your money from whatever savings you have left and if you’re already broke, they are taking away any buying power you had and taking it down to nothing…
So yea, fuck whatever bullshit economic theory or whatever academic bullshit you are talking about, regardless of whatever “politics” it’s tagged under… Its the 1% snatching away any and all power that the people accumulated over this covid recovery (strong labour market, practically 0 interest during peak covid, work from home, etc)
It won’t. They’re just banking on you forgetting you signed up so they can charge your card.
But If there isn’t any money on the card then they can’t charge you. Think of it as signing up with a gift card in a way. However the times that I’ve done it I haven’t been able to use a card with $0 on it. I’ve always had to put at least $1 on it so the card can be verified.

I have a friend who has been using an e-cigarette for 10+ years. He doesn’t seem any less addicted to smoking as back when he was using old-fashioned cigarettes....
Yes. Pack a day + chain smoking when I drank. I used an ecig to quit. Over the course of about 7 years, (yeah, just like your friend!) 12mg then 9mg then 6, then 3, then 1.5, then 0. I stayed on 0 for awhile and then one day I got out the car at a store and my ecig must of hit the ground. I never saw it again. That was the day I finally quit for good. Been 3 years now.
If nothing else, ecigs are way less of a risk and way less of a diminisher to ones quality of life compared to analog cigarettes. There is no stank left on the user and the users clothes. There is no more hacking up a lung every morning. ecigs seem to not suppress the immune system as harshly as analog cigarettes either. ecigs are incredibly cheaper too.
There is a lot of propaganda out there, misinformation, being disseminated by “big tobacco” - cause they are losing and have lost A LOT of profits due to people switching to ecigs and quitting analog cigarettes. They’ve even lobbied governements to pass legislation restricting access to ecig materials - citing the same old bullshit line: “Won’t somebody think of the children!?! OH THE CHILDREN!!!”
I think most media made in the 1990s and later have fallen into this capitalist black hole of culture.
Our governments have given corporations total control over who is allowed to access what media, and these companies have 100% incentive profit from artificial scarcity over that tiny span of time when people have interest in buying it, while having 0% incentive to preserve that media in archives meant to survive centuries or even mere decades. Most TV shows, film, music, even photos, and especially video games, that were created during our lifetimes will also disappear forever during our lifetimes. It is kind of an unprecedented situation. Never in history has such a large and productive society left behind so little of our culture for future historians to discover about us. Basically we are leaving behind our garbage and pollution, and no sign of our art or culture.
Every so often I hear a news story about some guy discovering a box of old records in his basement for music that had previously been thought lost to history. Every time I hear about that, I have to wonder what, if anything, will the future humans discover about us now that it is all digital and streaming on demand?
