DasRubberDuck, in We're moving back to my native Greece after 25+ years abroad, and so I decided to paint our current process

It’s missing the anger in you partners face as they are packing boxes while you enjoy painting. Kidding ;)

Nice picture! Good luck with your move!

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Haha, I wish! He’s an engineer, and he says that I “don’t do the boxes right”. So he likes to do it by himself! He only needs me to ask if we’re going to keep something or throw it away. So I keep painting! :)

JuicyGyri, in Please give me some tips to paint water/sea/waves better

You have lovely colour choices and tonal variation happening! One tip I could give is to do some of the water in layers, using a wet on wet application you can create edges that look a bit like the layering of waves on the beachfront. Also utilising my transparency (less pigment) on the shoreline and more toward the ‘deep’ water will give the illusion of the deepening waters :) start with your least pigmented later, let it dry then work your way out :)

nieceandtows,

Thank you! I’ll try that.

daredevil, in I used to be a collage artist before I started painting with watercolor. These elements were painted separately and then collaged together, as an experiment
@daredevil@kbin.social avatar

Just one person's opinion here--I'd say post if you feel inclined to. People willing to post at all, let alone post original content are in short supply. That said, nice piece, and I hope to see more.

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Thank you, appreciated! I just hope there were more people posting art on Lemmy! I feel uncomfortable seeing so many of my stuff on this sub when browsing…

daredevil,
@daredevil@kbin.social avatar

I completely understand. However, in my experience, I have often seen people say they were hesitant to post in the first place because people aren't posting. People like you may help motivate others to change that. No pressure of course, you're free to do as you please. I'm just some internet stranger, after all.

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

👍 🙂 Thank you!

Xanthrax, in We're moving back to my native Greece after 25+ years abroad, and so I decided to paint our current process
@Xanthrax@lemmy.world avatar

I’d love to see this as a series, telling your story in the form of children’s picture book.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

That was my first thought as well. This style lends itself really well to children’s books imo

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep, my intent going to illustration was that particular children’s style.

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Thank you! Yeah, a children’s book was in my plans until AI happened and the market was flooded. I had an idea to teach kids about timezones!

Xanthrax,
@Xanthrax@lemmy.world avatar

Do iiiiiit. Half of what people like about art is the life story of the people who created it. I understand if it’s not financially viable. The time zone idea sounds really great!

BonesOfTheMoon, in We're moving back to my native Greece after 25+ years abroad, and so I decided to paint our current process

Where are you moving back from? This is really well done.

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

We’re currently in Spokane, WA, USA. I also lived for a few years in the UK. I left Greece in late 1996.

BonesOfTheMoon,

That’ll be a big change. Are you moving to your former home in Greece? Why are you moving back?

If this is too nosy tell me to go away lol.

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, it’s going to be quite a change, mostly for my French husband. It should be familiar territory for me. We bought a new house close to my mom’s house, as we have a lot of things and we wouldn’t fit in her house. We’re moving after deciding I need to help my mom, after my dad’s death last year, where he died alone in the mountains (they were divorced). I had plans to go that year and move him to an apartment, after postponing that trip due to c-vid for a year. I was too late…

BonesOfTheMoon,

That’s nice of you to help your mom. I’m sorry about your dad, that’s terrible. I hope it all goes well. Is the cost of living at least better?

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Cost of living is better than the US overall, but the prices on foods is going up constantly there… Thankfully we will have a veggie garden, and access to local pastured eggs, goats, sheep, and chickens by my aunts, and wild fish from the nearby sea town.

BonesOfTheMoon,

That will make a big difference. Best of luck with the move, I am sure it will all go well.

@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

I really like this, it has such a loving mood. If you two can remain that mellow when packing, that’s love. Good luck with the move!

Thank you! :)

Thanks, I will. I have a bunch of such illustrations. :)

This is great, but I can’t unsee the predator.

Crul,
Maultasche, in Watercolor concept art by Hayao Miyazaki

The plane and the tank look like they’re from Nausicaä.

Miyazaki’s watercolours are always great.

quinacridone,

Was going to say it looks like Nausicaä, I’ve got the manga books, beautiful images and fantastic story. He does female protagonists really well

Maultasche,

There’s also a giant artbook with an the watercolours he did for the manga that I can really recommend.

quinacridone,

Nice, I’ll check it out

Chef_Boyardee, in Sled down the hill with little brother

Beautiful. Great job. And I have an art degree that I never use. So, you can take my word.

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Thank you, appreciated! :)

mister_seawolf, in I pulled an all-nighter for this watercolor painting (couldn't sleep due to anxiety, painting relaxes me)

I love your work! The watercolors you post here on Lemmy are worthy of an art gallery or illustrations in a children’s book, really anywhere!! They need to be published in some form. Please tell me you are getting recognized for your work!

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh, wow, thank you! I have plans for a book, but so far, not much recognition exists. I started painting you see when the enshitiffication of instagram started, and so I didn’t go far with normal social media. I had more luck at the federated Pixelfed!

mister_seawolf,

The first one I saw which is still my favorite is the collage-type one that you posted a few weeks back where you cut and pasted each individual piece of the picture together. That is a super unique looking style that I feel like I haven’t really seen before. Really beautiful piece, I just love it!

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh, thank you so much! I might do some more watercolor collages again in the future. I’m currently moving back to Europe (that’s why I have anxiety with our move), and all my gear and supplies are all packed. I’ve kept out with me only a palette of 24 watercolors, a small sketchbook, 2 brushes, a posca pen, and a few colored pencils.

graublau, in I pulled an all-nighter for this watercolor painting (couldn't sleep due to anxiety, painting relaxes me)

It looks great, I love the colors!

eugenia,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Thank you!!

Timecircleline, in Please give me some tips to paint water/sea/waves better

In addition to what the other commenter said, you can go in with some more opaque white afterwards for sea foam/reflection detail

nieceandtows,

Thank you. I used the cakes, which are not as opaque for whites as I expected. I’ll try the tubes.

Timecircleline,

You might also want to try a paint pen to get fine lines

nieceandtows,

I have those. I’ll try that thanks

Bebo, in Happy Halloween everyone!! (my watercolor painting)
